Ye Shikai, carrying a fruit basket, came to visit Xie Dong.
“Mr.
Xie, how are you feeling now?” Ye Shikai asked the Xie Dong on the hospital bed, speaking indifferently.
“Much better, thank you, Mr.
Ye.” Xie Dong showed a faint smile.
“Mr.
Ye, I heard that you have solved the case, right?”
“Yes, Mr.
Xie, take a look.” Ye Shikai handed him a newspaper, the headline of which was about last night’s case solved at the chemical plant.
Xie Dong looked at the newspaper and heaved a long sigh of relief.
“Mr.
Xie, do you know who killed your wife?” Suddenly, Ye Shikai’s sharp gaze fixed on Xie Dong’s face, and Ye Shikai keenly noticed a slight change in Xie Dong’s complexion, and a tremble in his fingers.
“It was you who killed them, right, Mothman?” Ye Shikai, startlingly, slowly stood up, looking meaningfully at Xie Dong on the bed.
“Ah, Mr.
Ye, you are a smart man.” Xie Dong’s face fell and he remained silent for a long time before he spoke.
“I’ve always been wondering why I didn’t encounter the Mothman from earlier in that biological chemical garden,” Ye Shikai spoke slowly, realizing in shock after connecting what Dr.
Li said yesterday, that the previous Mothman wasn’t in the base at all.
“At the very start of the case, I was puzzled why both Cheng Mei and Sun Yu were killed while you just suffered serious injuries and fell into the river,” Ye Shikai went on and on, suddenly raising his voice, pointing at Xie Dong.
“Because that Mothman was none other than you,” Ye Shikai declared sternly.
“It was you who personally killed Cheng Mei and Sun Yu,” Ye Shikai coldly stated.
The man in front of him had personally murdered his fiancée.
“Yes, that’s right, they all deserved to die,” Xie Dong said through gritted teeth, his face suddenly twisting into a ferocious expression, hands clenched tightly.
“I’d seen your file before; your ex-wife accidentally drowned, and then you accepted Cheng Mei, who had been pursuing you relentlessly, right?” Ye Shikai inquired.
“Hmph, what accident?
It was clearly the work of Cheng Mei’s family,” Xie Dong spoke coldly, before slumping down on the bed as if drained of energy.
“I always thought my ex-wife died in an accident, until one day, a woman came,” he said slowly.
“She showed me a video: my wife was pushed into the river by two men.” Xie Dong revealed a vicious expression, grinding his teeth, anger evident in his tone.
“My wife was clearly murdered.
I knelt before that woman, begging her to tell me the truth, then she showed me some photos.”
“In a café, right in front of the two men who pushed my wife into the water, clearly stood Cheng Mei and her parents.” Xie Dong painfully shed tears, “I could hardly believe it at the time, but when I thought about Cheng Mei’s attitude toward me, it all made sense.”
Ye Shikai didn’t show any surprise; he had put all the pieces together last night.
Xie Dong’s reason for personally murdering Cheng Mei surely had to do with his past, but Ye Shikai hadn’t expected Cheng Mei, in pursuit of Xie Dong, to be so malicious as to plot with her parents to kill Xie Dong’s ex-wife.
“So you planned your revenge.”
“Correct, later that woman told me, if I were willing to meet her one requirement, she could help me take revenge, and I wouldn’t need to fear the police.” Xie Dong said, sadness crossing his face.
“Becoming the Mothman, right?”
“You got it,” Xie Dong nodded, his eyes fierce.
“I pretended to have moved on from the grief of my ex-wife’s death, naturally accepting Cheng Mei, and showing affection, just to lower their guard.”
“What about Sun Yu then?
Why kill him?” Ye Shikai asked.
“Sun Yu was the adopted son of Cheng Mei’s parents, though not blood-related, they treated him as their own.” Xie Dong explained.
“No wonder, killing all their children, that’s more tormenting than if you had killed them yourself.” Ye Shikai lit a cigarette, took a deep breath—such a ruthless final stroke.
“Ha, now they’re living in agony.” After hearing this, Ye Shikai wore a frown; killing their children, the parents were probably crying unconscious in the bathroom.
But after all, they brought this upon themselves; those to be pitied have their hateful sides.
“When we found you, you were injured all over, probably from the fall, right?” Ye Shikai said, pulling a photo from his pocket and placing it in front of Xie Dong.
“This is a sewer; you used it to get into the river, didn’t you?” Ye Shikai said.
Xie Dong had made one error, jumping into the river because based on the river’s current beneath Hunxi Bridge, he shouldn’t have been discovered there, proving that Xie Dong was lying.
“A perfect scheme foiled by a single oversight,” Xie Dong remarked with a sigh.
“Also, one thing I don’t understand, why were you at Huatao Bridge?” Ye Shikai was puzzled; this was one mystery he could not comprehend.
“The injection I took was an incomplete product; I must…
take an antidote every day to stay alive.”
“So they used that to threaten you,” Ye Shikai pursued.
“Yes, they demanded I appear on Huatao Bridge every night.” Xie Dong said, unable to help but sigh, “Now that they are dead, it won’t be long before I die too.”
“Mr.
Ye, you may arrest me now.” Xie Dong raised his hands, indicating Ye Shikai to cuff him.
“As a man approaches death, his words are kind; as a bird faces extinction, its cry is woeful,” Ye Shikai spoke softly.
“Take care, Mr.
Xie.” With that, Ye Shikai turned and left.
To Xie Dong, his enemies were dead, and his deep-seated revenge was fulfilled; he was a pitiable person, without an antidote, Xie Dong would likely die within days, and Ye Shikai had no interest in arresting a dying man.
After leaving the hospital, Ye Shikai went to the police station to return the authority document Song Tian had given him, and although Song Tian held a celebration in Ye Shikai’s honor at the station, Ye Shikai declined the offer, which made Zhang Ting somewhat displeased.
Eventually, Ye Shikai just went for a meal at a roadside stall with Tianjing and the others.
Returning to his apartment complex, Ye Shikai slowly walked to the balcony, watching the brilliant sunshine, somewhat reflective.
In every 24-hour day, there is a particularly dark period before dawn; Ye Shikai sat on a chair, thoroughly enjoying the hard-earned sunlight.
Just days later, Ye Shikai received news: the hospital announced the death of Xie Dong.
Thus, the Mothman case, was conclusively closed.
