Chapter 112 - 112 112 Thousand Paper Cranes
112: Chapter 112: Thousand Paper Cranes 112: Chapter 112: Thousand Paper Cranes When the girl threw herself into his arms, Ye Shikai remembered her.
She was the daughter of Mr.
Li and Mrs.
Zhao, named Li Mengmeng, three years younger than him.
She used to cling to him, begging him to play games with her.
After years of not seeing each other, she had grown into a slender and graceful young lady.
“Brother Kai, you’ve finally come back.” Seeing Li Mengmeng in his embrace, neither Mrs.
Zhao nor Mr.
Li tried to intervene; instead, they looked on contentedly.
After Li Mengmeng got down from him, she looked at him with a deeply affectionate gaze.
“Yeah, I haven’t been back in Yanjing for long.” Ye Shikai took a seat on the couch, carefully looking over Li Mengmeng.
This girl really had changed drastically during the years he was away.
“So you’re not leaving Yanjing this time, right?” Li Mengmeng spoke, her expression full of anticipation, and her body was pressed against his in a very intimate posture.
“Mm, after so many years abroad, I’m planning to settle back in Huaxia.” Ye Shikai replied, and upon hearing this, Li Mengmeng’s face broke into a satisfied smile.
“Brother Kai, why didn’t you send me any texts all these years?” Li Mengmeng swung her arms, her face full of reproach, “I always watched my phone, afraid I’d miss a text from you.”
Ye Shikai had indeed thought about this.
But during those years abroad, he was constantly in danger, complicating communication with Li Mengmeng back in Huaxia.
Secondly, he was also concerned that Mr.
Li’s family might become implicated.
“It really wasn’t convenient, and I also lost some means of contact while overseas.” Ye Shikai offered an excuse.
“Well, it’s okay.
After all, you’ve come back now.” Li Mengmeng replied with a cheerful smile, understanding that Ye Shikai’s years abroad must have been tough, and that there was no need to keep blaming him.
“Brother Kai, come with me.” Suddenly, Li Mengmeng stood up, took hold of his arm, and led him toward another room.
“Mengmeng, where are you taking me?” Ye Shikai asked, puzzled.
Li Mengmeng smiled knowingly and opened the door in front of her.
“Brother Kai, look.” Li Mengmeng opened the door to reveal pink wallpapers and a bed covered in plush toys, the room clearly styled for a young girl.
Without question, it was Li Mengmeng’s room.
Ye Shikai wondered why she brought him here.
Ye Shikai glanced around the room and noticed many photo frames of various sizes on the desk and cabinets.
On closer inspection, each frame contained photographs of him and Li Mengmeng together, spanning from childhood to adulthood—mostly snaps of them playing.
There were more of these than his own family portraits.
The largest frame on the desk showcased a picture from his military service with Li Mengmeng; he was in uniform, looking spirited, while Li Mengmeng, dressed casually, clung to his arm affectionately.
Ye Shikai didn’t realize that Li Mengmeng had been thinking of him all this time, her affection for him so deep.
And yet, he hadn’t even made a single phone call to her in these three years.
“Brother Kai, look at this.” Li Mengmeng pointed towards the ceiling.
Ye Shikai looked up to see that the ceiling was covered in origami cranes, each linked by thin threads.
At first glance, it resembled a scene of the Heavenly Maiden scattering flowers, and he was quite astonished.
“Hehe, Brother Kai, every day I didn’t see you, I folded a paper crane.
Before I knew it, there were so many,” Li Mengmeng scratched her little head, somewhat embarrassed.
Ye Shikai looked at the sky full of cranes, feeling at a loss for words.
Three years in the military, another three years abroad, and the few days he had returned in between, he estimated there would be over two thousand paper cranes by now.
“Mengmeng, I’m really sorry.
I had no idea you cared so much.
Back when I…” Ye Shikai tried to explain, but Li Mengmeng interrupted him.
“It’s okay, Brother Kai.
You’re back now.” Li Mengmeng smiled, her years of waiting finally having paid off.
The two sat on chairs and started chatting.
Having grown up playing together, reminiscing over their childhood antics felt rather special…
“Kai, Mengmeng, come out and eat.” At that moment, Mrs.
Zhao knocked on the door and came in, calling them out to eat.
Seeing their joyful faces, Mrs.
Zhao also smiled.
“Brother Kai, let’s go.
My mom has made a bunch of delicious food,” Li Mengmeng said, grabbing his arm with excitement.
“Alright.”
Around the dining table.
“Kai, try this.” Ye Shikai felt somewhat helpless.
Mr.
Li and Mrs.
Zhao had been ceaselessly adding food to his bowl, piling it up like a small mountain.
“How was the food overseas?
It couldn’t have been as good as what we have here, right?” Mr.
Li asked with concern.
“Indeed, it wasn’t great.
Compared to Mrs.
Zhao’s cooking, it’s a far cry.” Ye Shikai also enjoyed the meal heartily.
He used to love eating Mrs.
Zhao’s cooking, often visiting their house as a child.
And now, after experiencing so much, settling down for a meal of homecooked food and chatting with them was truly enjoyable.
“Come by more often when you have time.
This is your home too,” Mr.
Li said with a smile, and the four of them happily finished their meal together.
“Mengmeng, you must be in university by now,” Ye Shikai remarked after their meal.
When he had gone abroad, Li Mengmeng was still in high school.
By his calculations, she should be at university now.
“Yes, I’m in my second year,” Li Mengmeng replied with a smile.
“At which university?” Ye Shikai asked.
“Beitian University,” Li Mengmeng answered, to which Ye Shikai exclaimed in surprise.
Beitian University was not as renowned as Yanjing University but was still one of the top institutions in Huaxia.
Getting in would be quite difficult, and he remembered Li Mengmeng having only average grades back then.
Clearly, she must have worked incredibly hard to get into Beitian University.
“Is that so?
That’s very impressive.” Ye Shikai couldn’t help but think of Su Ziqing and Han Ruoyao, those two young ladies.
By his calculations, Li Mengmeng was of similar age to them, and all three were beautiful, academically gifted women.
