Chapter 95: Lucas: Assistant Iris
THE BLUE office remains silent after my heartfelt confession and Chloe’s little joke. Iris is covering her face, too embarrassed to look at either of us. I would be, too, if I were her.
I smirk at her, pride fueling up my entire body at her reaction.
"You’re so..." she falters, letting out a sigh as she struggles to let go of her face. The faux white flowers behind her are somewhat adding to her innocent persona, paired with her clean white loose sweater that I mistook for a blouse this morning and nude pants.
If this was my first impression of her I’m sure I’d have done a double take just to make sure my eyes aren’t deceiving me. Iris looks gorgeous—a goddess is sitting before me, blushing because I made a comment about her.
"So, what’s it gonna be?" Chloe raises her eyebrows at Iris.
"Whatever he said," she shrugs and looks away from me.
"Public gym it is then," Chloe writes it down in what I presume is the journal she uses for her clients. I found her online when I was scrolling on Instagram this afternoon. It was a video of her jogging with her couple of clients and it looked like they were having fun.
It was then that the idea struck me. I wanted to join the club with Iris as my spouse. Maybe it was an on-the-moment inspiration based on the comments that kept popping up under Bella’s post but I suddenly wanted to go public with Iris.
Most importantly, I don’t want Iris stressing over such trivial matters such as Bella and me dating. If it means I have to be an asshole to get the message to Bella then I will be. She’s already threatened Iris enough.
"Shall I take you on a tour around the building then?" Chloe asks, standing and walking around her small desk.
We follow her out as she leads the way to what we would soon discover is an entire fortress of bodybuilding. The building has two floors to be exact. On the lower floor is where most of the sweat-striking exercises take place. There are tons of equipment and buff guys stretching and lifting weights as if they are nothing.
My eyes automatically land on Iris as we pass the section where half-naked guys are flexing their muscles to the public. She’s staring. I feel a pang of jealousy when one of them waves at her and she waves back.
"He has big muscle," she waves at yet another one of them. I have to suppress the urge to lower her hand by biting my bottom lip.
"Are they?"
"Yes. But I like yours better. They’re comfortable with just the right amount of rigid and soft. Don’t stretch them too much okay?" She pats my belly and increases her pace.
The ache in my heart settles and I smile, turning to the bulky guys and smirking victoriously like a kid and mouthing "She’s mine" at them. After the buff guys, we take a sharp turn that leads to the other section of the lower gym where the less tough-looking exercises are done.
Unlike the Alpha male section, this is more wholesome and packed—with females mostly. Chloe takes us right to the center of the gym, stopping us for a moment so she can assist some guy with his treadmill.
Iris and I are standing together in silence when the cameras start flashing again. It’s to be expected since we’re in the ladies section now. For some reason, women seem to be up to date with the latest online gossip. Thanks to that, one of them makes a run for it toward us when she realizes who I am.
"Luke!" She calls out, nervously handing me what looks like a marker. "Can you sign my juice bottle?"
I pause not knowing how to react. This is my first time having a real-life fan asking for my autograph.
"He will be glad to do so," Iris accepts her bottle and marker pushing them into my hands with a smile on her face.
"I’m sorry, but who are you?" The lady asks, scanning Iris from hair to toe like she’s disturbing the time of her life even though she just assisted her. As if she asked the question the entire gym was waiting to hear, everyone surrounding us pauses and a few form a circle around us.
Phones are out recording the event and waiting for the drama to unfold. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone is doing a live session right now. The overwhelming pressure of being watched doesn’t fade no matter how many times I try to make it feel easy.
I can only imagine what it feels like for Iris right now. This is probably her first time getting this much attention from strangers. I was born into this, but thanks to not having a strong social media presence, I wasn’t that much of a hit topic until recently.
From experience even I know how one wrong move here could lead to big gossip and hate, and yet, I can’t help but want the world to let me have my way in life.
Grabbing a bottle and marker in one hand, I take Iris’ hand into mine and raise it so the lady in front of us and the streamers can see everything clearly. "She is my girlfr—"
"Assistant. I’m his personal assistant," Iris cuts me.
"No, you are my girlfriend."
Iris slaps my back hard but she masks it with a fake laugh. "You’re funny sir, but this is not the time to crack jokes like that. They might misunderstand," she cracks up and hits my arm again. It’s a clear warning for me to shut up.
"Oh good, I was beginning to think he was cheating on Bella."
What?
"When did I even start dating her?" I ask the lady. She brushes her hair out of her eyes looking between Iris and me.
"I-I saw that picture of you together in her office hugging on Facebook..." she falters when my gaze on her slowly turns to a glare.
"We are not dating. And what picture are you talking about? Show it to me."
She doesn’t waste time before she shows me her phone with a picture of me and Bella hugging. I click my tongue at it and hand her her phone back.
"That’s clearly AI."
"Oh."
"Lucas," Iris warns. "She’s waiting for her autograph."
I’m about to refuse when Iris gives me the most rebuking look she’s ever put on her beautiful face. Turning back to the lady before us she grabs her hands.
"I’m sorry about his behavior. He’s recently stressed because of a photoshoot he has to do tomorrow."
"Photoshoot?"
"Yes. He’s going to be trying different cultural designs made by Bella herself."
The crowd goes wild at her commentary as the ladies scream in happiness. Shippers. You can never have proper conversations with them.
Taking the signed bottle from me and handing it to her, Iris turns and grabs my arm, smiling like she just handled the world’s greatest dilemma as she pulls me along with her toward Chloe who looks like she just saw something astonishing.
"Are you guys celebrities?"
"Not me, him," Iris points at me. "We better get out of here before the ladies start following us."
"Right, follow me."
Iris’ grip on me tightens. I don’t know what’s keeping her on edge, but I don’t like this new angry vibe she has.
Not even a bit.
