Chapter 64: Iris: I was fine
ONE WEEK away from the event. I was fine and pumped up about it, booking a makeup artist the girls and I agreed on to do our makeup for the night, checking up on my already made dress that Mary had to do a few adjustments to, and doing a few skim care routines to liven up my already beautiful skin.
I was fine. Until my grandparents found out about the picture on Instagram and their friends told them about the guy in the picture. Then they did their little investigation since they thought he was cheating on me, and it ended with them calling his dad and asking if he was cheating on me.
Mr. Andrews with his high-end loyalty to his friends told them the entire truth about my and Lucas’ relationship, leaving out the smut thankfully. My grandparents were on fire when I came home from work, them and the Adams parents who were supposed to have gone back to their couple house by the time I was back.
The moment they saw me, I got dragged to the sofa where Mary was seated too, slouched and hiding her face away from me. Jerald was next to her, confident as he came, not wavering like his sister when I sat between them.
"So, when were you going to tell us?" Grandma asked, sitting on the coffee table to look me in the eye. I didn’t know then that they knew everything by now, that Mary, Jerald, and Mr. Andrews had snitched on me, that my secret was out, and that my grandparents had seen the pictures online.
"What are you talking about grandma?" I smiled at her, looking around to gauge everyone’s reaction. No one, not even Mary tried giving me a hint that she knows.
"You and Lucas aren’t dating," she spat the words out. I stilled, my eyes glitching as I tried to think of a solution to this, but the chill everyone had was the confirmation that I needed to know that my grandmother had figured everything out and she had the evidence.
There was no way out. There is no way out. I’m gripping the back of Jerald’s hoodie for support, but even he is out of options. His face is as stoic as when he’s discussing something important, which is transitioning with what’s happening right now.
"You should have told us you weren’t dating him. We told him everything about you when you were cooking thinking it’d make him treat you better," Grandpa says in a low voice, depressed because he knows I don’t like my business being shared by the world.
Laughing inwardly as relief courses through me, I let go of Jerald’s clothes. So they’re worried about me? I thought I was about to get the counsel of my life.
"It’s okay, I’d already told him about it myself." Slapping my lips after I’ve already spilled the secret, I watch as the stares I’ve been getting ever since I entered the house turn from sympathy to surprise.
"You did?" Fredrick blurts out.
There’s no going back now.
"Yes, I told him after we got stuck in an elevator at the company and I started losing my breath—"
"Because of the dark," his wife finishes for me, closing her eyes and nodding.
"Yes, because if the dark. He helped me with his light until we got out, and, well, he naturally got curious. So I told him how my fear started and that’s that. He already knew before you guys told him," I shrug, slapping my thigh lightly when I drop my hands to stop gesturing.
Grandpa lets out a dramatically loud sigh. "I was scared to death thinking you’d hate me for life."
I chuckle. "Why would I hate you for that? It’s only natural that you seek me, someone who’ll love me for who I am, isn’t it?"
Grandma sits up straight. "It’s unfortunate we couldn’t make it work with him. He’d have been a good fit for you."
Oh, ifonlysheknew.
Standing, I give everyone a sideways wave. "Well, if that’s all there is to this meeting, I’ll be going upstairs to my room now."
"I’m coming with," Mary immediately offers, taking my bag from me as if I would reject her if she didn’t.
"Met too," Jerald adds surpassing us and running up the stairs moments later. It’s comforting to know I’m not the only one weirded out by sitting around in a room full of adults older than me by years.
Their topics are not only boring, but you have to watch them laugh at the things you and your peers would find bland.
"Aww, look at them still acting like they used to when they were kids," I hear Nicole say as we make our way to my room. It’s nostalgic to me too.
Mary and I arrive in my room to find Jerald already sleeping on my bed, playing a game on his phone. Ignoring him, I go and change in the bathroom, coming back and making him scoot to the side so Mary and I can look for some cute heels and accessories to pair with the elegant dress.
It’s a red illusion long prom dress with a deep V-neck that has been beaded and sequined. A fucking see-through chic evening gown that clasps to my body like plastic, with a flowery one arm on the side—all in the sexy shade of red.
The girls weren’t kidding when they said I had to go all out. If Lucas doesn’t do a double take when he sees me in that dress, I’m going to remove it completely in his car so that he can take another look at my naked body instead.
"Have you guys been invited to the charity event happening this Friday at your company?" Jerald says in his bragging voice and we both roll our eyes. "Guess you weren’t invited then. Sorry for you peasants, but my girlfriend, the HR manager has asked me to be her date for the event, and I’m busy trying to decide if I should go with a tuxedo or wear something sexy and show off my abs and chest."
"You can do either, but remember to not go overboard or else you’ll look like a sex-deprived hobo," Mary lashes at him.
I cackle, clicking on the see-through heels that caught my eye and turning to Jerald whilst the picture loads. "And sorry to break it to you, but my boyfriend is the fucking CEO’s son. Who’s the peasant now, huh?"
"Boyfriend? Did Lucas finally confess?"
I roll my eyes at Jerald, sticking my tongue out for no reason at all. "No, but I’m going to confess on Friday."
"Oh my. You guys are so lovely and sad to look at. You’re like late bloomers but also legends in a sense, it’s hard to explain."
Mary pinches him and he winces. "Ouch!"
"What is this about?" I ask, not paying attention as I start writing down the address to the shop where the heels are.
"Ignore him, he’s an idiot," Mary replies peeking into my phone. "Oh wow, those heels look fly."
"I know right, they’ll look so good with the dress. I can’t even."
"So should I go with the tuxedo or what?"
I lat Jeralds leg. "You’re hot enough to pull any of the two. Choose what you want the most."
He shrugs, grinning smugly. "That’s exactly the problem. I know I’m hot and it getting to my head and making this decision harder than it should be."
"Why don’t you try both of them on the same day?"
"How?" Jerald raises a brow. "If I wear the sexy chest out style, I won’t need the tuxedo jacket, but if I wear the entire thing, I won’t make my chest show for my sweet Kayla."
"Ewww," Mary and I chant together, scrunching our faces, even though we’re smiling.
"You could go pick her up in your tuxedo, and then when the two of you are alone later in the night, you’ll just have to remove your jacket and unpin a few buttons," I offer.
"I mean, how dumb can you be to not even think of that? It’ll come in handy too if Kayla wears a sleeveless dress like most of the ladies are going to do, then you can put your jacket on her when she starts getting cold," Mary adds with a few insults.
Flipping himself and grabbing the two of us into a hug, Jerald beams. "Thank you my munchkins. If Kayla kisses me next week, I’ll give you each a kiss."
"Ewww," we chant again, this time laughing loudly.
Mrs. Adams was right. This is fucking nostalgic.
We spent a few more minutes discussing what to do with our hair and saving Pinterest inspirations for later. It doesn’t take long before each of us has a list of accessories to buy tomorrow, and we agree to go shopping at two PM.
That’ll leave me enough time to go to my therapy session with Dr. Williams and ask for his guidance one last time before I hit my shot. I bet he’ll be happy when he figures out that’s the secret I’ve been keeping from.
I’m planning on asking him for some pointers when confessing to the guy you like. Who knows, his years of experience might come in handy and help me deliver an exceptional confession.
Dr. Williams, hereIcome.
