Chapter 61: Iris: Drama at work (2)
AS IF a blackhole suddenly sucked my brain and left me mummified, I petrify in Mary’s hands. "So that means she still likes Lucas?"
Lynn shakes her head arguably, tugging Mary’s hands off of me so I can get a clear view of her. "No. If anything, you guys just made me realize just how much he hates me. I don’t want him anymore, but I know a girl who won’t back down even if she knows Lucas is taken. She has been my mortal enemy over the years because she kept teasing me and grabbing Lucas’ attention in a few seconds then disappearing with him, only for him to come back in different clothes and hairstyle. Only idiots can’t guess what happens between them when they’re away."
"Lynn shut up. That’s something Lucas needs to tell her on their own."
I clasp Mary’s mouth. "No, let her finish. You were saying?"
"She’s coming to the event that’s happening in the coming weeks, and her chemistry with Lucas is even better than you guys. I heard rumors that she’s going to be the face of this month’s African issue of the magazine," Lynn continues, taking a deep breath and exhaling after she’s done.
"Oh my god, he said he was going to confess to the girl he likes at the event," I say in the lowest I-can’t-believe-what-I’m-hearing voice.
"Then it has to be her. Iris, you need to take action before she takes Lucas away from you."
"Oh come on, stop feeding her mind with negative thoughts Lynn. For all we know, the girl he talked about might be you," Mary groans, placing hands between us and pushing us away from each other.
"Did you know about this girl and not tell me, Mary?"
"No I didn’t, and that’s exactly why I’m calm. Lucas hasn’t looked like he’s in love like he does when he’s with you in ages now. Believe in him. Believe in love, Iris."
"Yeah, right. And risk the man she likes getting taken away from her? That’s the worst feeling in the world ever," Lynn flaps her arms around, pointing at me.
A pang of guilt hits me in that moment. I really fucked up her romantic fantasy by playing couple with Lucas, didn’t I?
"Don’t give me that sour pussy look, Iris. I’m not blaming anyone here. I’ve moved on from that asshole of a man you call Lucas and I’ve already started dating someone worth my time."
Mary and I freeze, before immediately springing toward her and grabbing every inch of her we can lay our hands on. "Who is it?!"
"More of that later, we need a plan to get your man back before he’s stolen away."
"He won’t be stolen from—"
I clasp Mary’s mouth a second time. "No, she’s right. I need to make him mine before he’s stolen again."
"That’s more like it," Lynn shouts joyfully. Thank goodness the room is soundproof or everyone walking by the boardroom would have heard our entire conversation by now.
Sitting on a chair, I cross my legs and look at Lynn. "What’s the girl’s name and what does she do?" I ask, tugging Mary off me. Lynn stalked me when I first came here, so I bet every money in my wallet that she did the same with whoever this woman was.
"Don’t tell her," Mary warns, but Lynn understands the pain of crushing on a boy and never having a chance with him better than she does, and because of that, she doesn’t listen to the already-taken lady before us.
"You already know her. She’s a fashion icon, the richest woman in Africa, and a supermodel in the making. Bella Chitsa."
And just like that, all the hope I had in me disappeared. Not only am I competing against a woman whose influence could create a noteworthy buzz worldwide, but I’m also competing against a fucking queen whose net worth could buy me a life and a boyfriend and still not leave a dent in her bank.
There’s a rumor that her face is insured for a whooping million dollars for fucks sake.
"When is she making an appearance here?" I ask in a weak voice, already losing my faith in love as Mary told me to do.
"If the rumors are true, then she’ll come here on the event to seal the deal, and the days after it for the photoshoot."
Oh, sothere’sabitoftime
formetoconfessthen."Do you think I can still win if I try?" I raise my eyebrows expectantly, looking at my advisor with hope filling me once again.
"Iris, stop beating yourself up. That guy likes you okay? We can all see it in the way he looks at you."
"That’s what Bertha told me when I told her I like Lucas," Lynn replies to her, crouching next to me. Is it bad that I believe her more than Mary?
"Listen to me Iris," she says in a low voice. "You need to take your chances and play your cards right. Confess to him on the day of the event, the exact same date he’s planning to confess to the woman he loves. That way, you won’t have to risk pushing him away during the few days we have left before the event. He could abandon you before the event and that’ll make you the laughing stock when he hooks up with Bella again."
"So, should ask him to be my date for the event?"
"I think that’s an even better idea. That way, you can separate him from Bella, and keep tabs on him without looking suspicious. And make sure to wear a good fit to the event too."
"What do you think would be a good dress to wear to an event and the day you’re going to confess to a guy?" Damn, I must sound like a hopeless idiot to them.
"A sexy dress, obviously," both Mary and Lynn shout, Mary managing to grab our attention since she’s been quiet ever since Lynn started giving me advice.
Noting the disturbed looks on our faces, she rolls her eyes and crouches next to Lynn. "I figured since you won’t listen to me, I might as well join you in this silliness l. But I still stand by what I said, Lucas likes you, Iris. He loves you. If you don’t believe me, wait until the event when he confesses to the woman he told you about, and watch him pour his heart out to you shamelessly. Wear a sexy dress and lingerie, because you are probably going to have the best fuck of your life that night."
A stray tear drops from my eyes, landing in my palm with a tiny splash. "Thanks, Mary. It means a lot to me that you think that way, but I’ve got to try don’t I."
"In the name of love, yes, Iris. You’ve got to give it all you have," she replies rubbing my palm.
"And you have a designer here whose dresses have been worn by celebrities, including Bella herself so you’re in good hands. I’ll whip up a dress so sexy, he’ll have a hard time taking his eyes away from you."
Another tear drops and I wipe it off. "Thanks, Lynn. I don’t deserve you after what I did to you."
"Ahh, stop with that nonsense already. I told you, I’m a taken woman now. So stop crying or else you’ll ruin your makeup."
I wipe my eyes, doing my best not to smear the mascara. "You’re a good person you know that?" I mumble, voice shaky from the crying.
"Same goes for you too, Iris. You helped me realize something I should have realized a long time ago after confessing to that idiot of yours and getting rejected. Thank you for saving me, Iris. I owe you a lifetime of thank you’s."
"You really don’t," I blabber again, fighting the urge to cry.
"If you do mean what you’re saying then shouldn’t you at least tell her the name of the man you’re dating?" Mary retorts, shrugging.
We both look at Lynn, who starts playing with her braids and rocking herself back and forth shyly. A girl in love. I can see it in her mannerisms, she’s thinking about that lucky guy she’s dating. Oh, whatever I’d give to be in a situation like hers right now.
"Oh my god will you stop with this stupid high school girl shit and just tell us already," Mary barks at her, losing her patience with every swerve Lynn does whilst rocking herself.
"Okay, okay. Will you chill bitch. He works in your department, Iris."
"Lucas," I blurt out on habit and she immediately scowls.
"I’d give anything to go back in the past and tell my younger self to not fall for that ice queen."
Mary and I laugh, but we soon compose ourselves and look expectantly at her again.
"His name starts with a D," she drops another hint.
"D, D, D," I keep reciting until it clicks. "Dion?"
She slowly nods. Mary and I freeze. "Dion?!" We ask in unison, raising our hands in the air as we await confirmation.
"Yes. Dion."
"Ahhhh."
I jump up and down, Mary grabbing our hands so we form a wheel and dance around like kids until we start feeling dizzy. I’m genuinely happy for Lynn. Really. She deserves some love after chasing that hopeless fantasy all these years.
"That leaves you, Iris," she says once we’re seated on the ground, breathless from the giggles we just had.
Mary nods. "Yeah. I don’t wanna pressure you, but you’re the only single lady here. Up your game, being in love feels nice."
I smile at her. "I bet it does."
