Chapter 147: Chapter 75 Mu Shinian, do you know why I am angry?
Mu Shinian stared coldly at the woman in front of him, his voice icy as he spoke, "I have no mother. Please leave my grandfather’s hospital room immediately, or I won’t hesitate to call the police!"
Mu Nuan wanted to say something, but the man beside her tugged at her hand. Her lips moved, but she said nothing and eventually left.
The doctor quickly finished the examination. Fortunately, the timely rescue meant that Elder Mu was not in danger of losing his life, but surgery should still be performed as soon as possible. The Doctor left instructions for Song Qiao and Nurse Zhang, hung a new IV bag for Elder Mu, and sent Nurse Zhang to the office to get some documents before leaving the room.
Because of the medication, Elder Mu soon fell asleep. Luckily, before their arrival, Nurse Zhang had persuaded Elder Mu to have dinner instead of waiting on an empty stomach for her to bring wontons.
Mu Shinian looked silently at the mess in the room. Without a word, he took down his school bag and placed it on the sofa, then grabbed a broom to sweep up the ceramic and glass shards from the floor.
Song Qiao stood there, taking a deep breath and trying to calm her still-unsteady breath. She watched the well-behaved Mu Shinian, initially feeling a bit of resentment towards him. After all, if it weren’t for him, Mu Nuan wouldn’t have come to the hospital demanding to take Mu Shinian away, which led to the argument with the grandfather. However, Song Qiao knew very well it wasn’t Shinian’s fault, but she still felt uncomfortable inside.
She approached and sat down on the chair beside the hospital bed, adjusting the blanket for her grandfather. Observing his very pale, unwell appearance, Song Qiao felt an ache in her heart.
Mu Shinian quickly cleaned up the mess in the room. When he returned, he had a gauze, disinfectant, and some medicine, possibly borrowed from the hospital nurses.
Although Mu Shinian was not the type to sweet-talk, his good behavior and the long duration Elder Mu had been hospitalized meant that every time Shinian had no classes, he would rush to the hospital. Consequently, the doctors and nurses all liked this filial child very much.
As the head of the department put it, Mu Shinian naturally possessed a very likable charm.
Mu Shinian walked over to Song Qiao’s side. His lips moved slightly, and he spoke with some discomfort, "Sis, you injured your hand. Let me apply some medicine for you!"
The boy had developed well physically, already slightly taller than Song Qiao. Additionally, because of his health concerns when he was younger, Elder Mu had decided to send him to the military for training when Shinian was only nine. Hence, he had a good physique!
At that moment, standing behind Song Qiao, he completely overshadowed her.
Song Qiao looked up at him and saw Mu Shinian’s youthful face tinged with panic, fear, and unease, as if he was afraid she would be angry, or stop speaking to him, or even drive him out of the Mu Family!
Her heart ached at the thought, and her expression softened. She pointed to the chair next to her to signal him to sit, then extended her injured hand and said softly, "Be gentle, I’m afraid it’ll hurt!"
Mu Shinian’s eyes brightened instantly, his face breaking into a smile as he replied, "Sis, I’ll be very gentle!"
Mu Shinian sat down to disinfect and apply medicine to Song Qiao’s hand, his expression serious as if he was afraid of hurting her, occasionally blowing on the spot gently.
Looking at the young man Mu Shinian had become, Song Qiao was filled with emotions.
Her uncle, Mu Shen, had passed away in a car accident when she was four years old, and Mu Shinian had just been born then. She had heard about her little cousin from her mother, but because his mother, Mu Nuan, had immediately divorced and left the Mu Family, taking Shinian with her, Song Qiao had only ever heard his name but never met him.
When Song Qiao first met Mu Shinian, she was eight years old, and he was four.
However, the four-year-old Shinian did not appear his age; instead, he looked like he was barely three, small and frail as if malnourished.
Later, Song Qiao learned that Mu Nuan, after taking Shinian away, did not take proper care of him. She was busy with the men she liked, leaving Shinian to a mentally ill nanny, whose care for Shinian was certainly questionable.
When Shinian first returned to the Mu Family, he spent all his time in the hospital’s ICU. He would call out for his grandfather, his aunt, but not for his cousin; he addressed Song Qiao as "sister."
From four to five years old, Shinian’s health was a constant concern, receiving numerous critical condition notices. Just when everyone thought he wouldn’t make it, he proved them wrong by surviving against all odds.
It took five years to nurse his body back to health. One could say that Song Qiao raised him, and their sibling bond grew incredibly deep.
But perhaps because Mu Shinian was more sensitive and aware of his mother’s issues, he had always been very careful while living in the Mu Family, striving to be a child that everyone liked. He was obedient and well-behaved, and when other kids were out playing, he would diligently study. Even though Elder Mu loved him dearly, Mu Shinian never took advantage of that love to do anything bad.
While Song Qiao was lost in her thoughts, Mu Shinian had already applied the medicine for her.
Heaving a sigh of relief, Mu Shinian neatly packed away the remaining gauze and medicine, seemingly relieved, and with a smile said, "Sis, it’s all done! Make sure not to touch water for the next few years, otherwise it will leave a scar!"
Song Qiao hummed a response, glanced at her grandfather on the hospital bed noticing he wouldn’t wake up anytime soon, then turned her head towards Mu Shinian with a tender voice laced with indulgence asked, "Have you had dinner yet?"
Mu Shinian subconsciously shook his head, but then seemed to remember something, and shook his head again.
Song Qiao furrowed her brows, "So, did you eat or not?"
Mu Shinian, "...No!" He knew he couldn’t lie to his sister, so he honestly admitted it.
He had rushed here right after his classes ended, naturally, he hadn’t had time to eat.
Song Qiao sighed softly, and promptly picked up her bag, saying, "Let’s go, I haven’t had dinner either. Let’s eat something together, then I’ll drop you home!"
This year Mu Shinian is studying in his final year of high school, with college entrance exams coming up next year. Although they always hoped Mu Shinian would board at school to focus better on his studies, he declined this request.
After the Mu Family went bankrupt, only the Mu Mansion was left. Even though they were in deep debt, everyone knew it was the Mu Mansion, and no one thought about auctioning it off, so they still had a place to shelter themselves from the elements.
The Mu family’s home was large, previously employing numerous servants, but now only an old driver and Zhang Ma, along with the three grandparents and grandchildren, were left.
Mu Shinian acknowledged, but then something crossed his mind. He stood up but didn’t immediately leave. Instead, he looked worriedly at Elder Mu on the hospital bed, his lips moved, saying, "But sis, Grandpa also needs someone to take care of him. Why don’t you go eat first, and I will stay here to look after Grandpa, I’ll eat something later myself!"
"Are you planning to just eat bread again??" Song Qiao stopped in her tracks, turned back to look at him, and bluntly called him out with a stern voice!
Mu Shinian’s face turned red, clearly caught by Song Qiao, and he didn’t manage to utter a word for a long while!
Song Qiao looked at Mu Shinian, who hung his head low not daring to meet her gaze, and took another deep breath, saying, "Shinian, don’t worry about Grandpa’s surgery costs, your sister is here! You don’t have to save money by eating bread every day. You are still growing, and you should eat what you need without scrimping."
In fact, she learned that Mu Shinian had been eating instant noodles because a lady from their company, whose daughter was at the same school as Shinian, had once accompanied him during registration and remembered him. Today at noon, when that young girl went to find her mother, she then told her about seeing Shinian munching on bread every day at school.
At that moment, Song Qiao froze on the spot, to say it wasn’t painful would be a lie.
Mu Shinian, being only sixteen years old and still growing, should have the best he could get. If no one had told her, she truly wouldn’t have known that he had been saving money by eating bread for a month.
Mu Shinian looked up at Song Qiao, his eyes slightly red and his nose tingling almost bringing him to tears, but because he was a man he held them back, and said, "Sis, I just wanted to lighten your burden, sis... this is the money I earned from tutoring on Saturday, though it’s only a thousand yuan..."
Song Qiao’s eyes widened as Mu Shinian handed her a bank card, shock filled her eyes, "You’ve been tutoring on weekends!"
Mu Shinian carefully watched Song Qiao, but still nodded!
Song Qiao felt more than just a slight heartache now; even her head began to ache slightly, she didn’t say another word, deeply gazed at Mu Shinian for a moment, then turned and walked towards the hospital room door!
Mu Shinian immediately felt a surge of panic, quickly picked up his backpack and followed her, somewhat anxiously explaining, "Sis, don’t be angry, I just didn’t want to burden you too much, and I’m not a child anymore, at sixteen I am already considered an adult, I can earn money..."
"Mu Shinian!" Song Qiao stopped, calling his full name directly, which was rare; usually, she’d call him Shinian or Xiao Nian, calling his full name meant she was truly angry, "Do you understand why I am angry? I’ve told you many times, the cost for Grandpa’s surgery I will handle, you really don’t need to worry about it, all I and Grandpa want is for you to focus on your studies, understood?"
