Chapter 59: An Unexpected Encounter
Chapter 59: An Unexpected Encounter
Percy had always gotten what he wanted.
For years since he had turned into adulthood, he had learned that power and money were too fearful to have. As the heir of the wealthy Donovan family, there were only a handful of things he couldn’t get his hands on.
And one of them was Lucy Corone.
Lucy appeared before him like a precious lotus in a pond, beautiful and elegant yet distant and important.
Percy hadn’t shied away from swooning her when he first found her. But his charms and sex appeal weren’t enough to bring down her guards.
Why was it like that? All women he’d pursued would end up in his bed. Some are easier, some are difficult to attain. But in the end, they’d all still become his lover. Just like the girl in his bed, sleeping without a care.
And just like everyone else, she’d become one of his one-night stands.
"I can give you anything you want, Lucy," Percy offered. "Just say a word, and I’ll give them to you."
Lucy coldly told him the truth. "What you can give me isn’t what I want."
"Are you sure?" Percy tapped his cheek with the invitation card in his hand. "Because I know this is currently what you want. Really want."
Percy wasn’t wrong. She needed that invitation card. Lucy couldn’t get that anywhere unless she was part of the upper-class society of Grid City, which she was not. Not anymore after she divorced Landon.
The Le Bal des Debutantes was one of the most prestigious and glamorous balls in the world, where young women from elite, aristocratic, and wealthy family make their debut in the upper-class society. That’s where Lucy wanted to make her grand entrance.
And Emma was one of the debutants. But Lucy wanted Landon’s sister to be the most memorable debutant in the world.
Lucy persisted. "I’m not going to sleep with you, Percy."
She stood up and gathered her things, intending to leave.
"Where are you going?" Percy stared at her.
She shrugged. "The deal’s off. Return the painting tomorrow and please delete my number from your contact list. No. Forget it. I’ll just block you from my contacts."
Percy didn’t think she’d leave just like that. Wasn’t she aiming for the invitation card in his hand? Or was it not so important to her, after all?
He wanted to see if she was bluffing, but when Lucy reached the door, he couldn’t stay calm any longer.
This woman really wants to stop contacting him!
"Fine, you win!" Percy tossed his hands in the air. "Just don’t block me."
Lucy stopped by the door and turned around with her palm raised.
Percy knew he was tricked into giving in to her, but it did not annoy him at all. Instead, it only increased his interest in Lucy. She’s one hell of a woman, after all.
"Here, the thing you want." Percy handed the card to her.
Lucy took it and stepped out of the door.
Inside the room, Percy released an exasperated sigh. "What a heartless woman. She didn’t even say goodbye."
With the thing she wanted in her hand, Lucy could finally calm her restless heart.
It hadn’t been easy to get invited to the ball, as it was an exclusive event. Even with all her connections to other people, they’d be reluctant to give away this piece of paper.
But Percy was different. He had no use for it.
For her to get it from him, Lucy had to take several steps to get close to Percy. His having interest in her was an accident. But Lucy would not complain if that got her what she wanted.
Anyway, she would never reciprocate his intention.
As for having a relationship with a significant other in the future... Lucy thought that it was impossible for her to do that. Her daughter was enough for her.
Lucy waited in front of the elevator. Her thoughts became preoccupied with her plans during the ball, where she’d make Emma never forget the night and feel the humiliation Lucy had always felt.
She could still remember the first party she’d been to after marrying Landon. It was on birthday banquet for Mr. Harrison, an old wealthy tycoon. As someone who had never been into a prestigious party, Lucy had to depend on Landon. But he left soon after he greeted Mr. Harrison for work.
And so Emma took advantage of Landon’s absence and Lucy’s naivety. She made sure that Lucy would feel abandoned and rejected by their world. That she didn’t belong there.
Lucy endured the humiliation, mocking stares, and scathing words they told her. They accused her of stealing Landon from Yvonne. She could remember defending herself. Emma stayed on the side, watching the scene as if it was a worth-while TV drama.
And instead of protecting her, Lucy got a slap from Patricia, who thought she had ruined her son’s reputation for losing her temper.
Of course, Emma couldn’t let this opportunity go. She had Sophie pour a glass of wine on her dress, unapologetically saying it was an accident.
But Lucy knew everything. It was a miracle she had it in herself to bear all the abuse they’d given her.
Landon did not know anything. But not knowing anything about what happened to your wife was even worse than knowing and doing nothing.
At that moment, Lucy knew she didn’t matter to him. He only wanted a wife, a doll he could display in front of other, but he’d never care nor want to know what she was doing or what has been done to her.
Lucy heard the elevator stopping on her floor and slid open in front of her.
She was about to step inside, but the sight in front of her almost sucked her soul out of her body.
The heavens truly were against her.
This was not part of her plan.
Meeting Landon in front of the elevator never was a part of her plans.
