The Billionaire's Ex-Wife Returns!
Chapter 53: Innocent Boy

Chapter 53: Innocent Boy

Outside Lucy’s apartment, the four people standing there were now nervously glancing at each other, mirroring each of their own emotions on their faces.

Right now, they clearly didn’t expect the turn of events and were initially still thinking of taking the little boy from the woman living in this apartment. They were glad that she called the local police. They were easier to rope into their side.

But who knew she would call the headquarters police?

Now, everything was unclear.

"What are we going to do? Madam would certainly not like this if she learns that we let the boy go!" the woman bit her nails until it broke. She kept pacing left to right, showing how anxious she was.

"Stop moving around already!" shouted the man as he was influenced and got irritated by her movements. "We’re still not discovered yet. We can still get out of this mess!"

The police officer with them also nodded. "Don’t worry. If we talk to the cops inside later, we can still turn this around. Just in case... don’t forget what we talked about earlier downstairs!"

The woman and the man’s expression turned gloomy once the police officer reminded them.

When they found out the boy was gone, they almost couldn’t breathe. And with the local police coming their way, they immediately got nervous. But they quickly made promises to them using their employer’s background. Fortunately, the local police officers were greedy enough for a small promotion and monetary rewards. Thus, they were able to get them to their side.

But the headquarters police department was different. They don’t get moved by any monetary reward or promotion. They’re persistent and even the tycoons in Grid City wouldn’t make them close their eyes once they got involved in a shady business. Instead, the headquarters police would be the first to arrest them!

Although they were afraid that they would get exposed, the woman and the man quickly calmed down after the police officer said those words.

That’s right. It’s their words against that woman. For as long as they could prove that they didn’t do anything to the boy, they can get away from this!

But the couple remembered that they indeed abused the little boy and traces could still be found in their apartment!

"Go quickly and clean up our place!" the man woke up from his daze and ordered the woman.

The woman nodded and hurriedly ran downstairs.

Just as she was about to step on the first step of the stairs, the door to that woman’s apartment suddenly opened. The two cops from the headquarters emerged from it.

...

Lucy watched as the cops finally left her apartment and dealt with the people outside. To keep the little boy from getting scared, she closed her door and turned around with a gentle smile on her lips.

After a round of questioning, she and the cops finally understood what was happening.

Naturally, the cops wouldn’t try to ignore this case and report it back to make it an official case.

Time was wasted on this matter, but it did not bother Lucy. She was happy to help the little boy.

But now, she needed to get back to her business.

Glancing down at her phone, Lucy noticed she received another message from an unregistered number.

This time, it was a number she couldn’t recognize before.

[Hello, this is James Falcon from Westwood HQ. I was sent to be your new assistant and I would like to meet you today so I can start assisting you in your job.]

It was barely two introductory sentences, but Lucy grasped the meaning of it. Landon really gave her a new assistant after the two from before failed to do their job.

This also proved to her that Landon took importance in her. Or more precisely, on Corone, her other identity as a painter.

Lucy thought for a moment before finally typing her reply.

[It’s inconvenient to meet today.]

[Let’s meet tomorrow.]

After sending her replies, Lucy moved her attention back to the little boy, who visibly relaxed after the cops disappeared. He was not sitting on the same single-sitter sofa he sat in earlier, looking at his own hands that rested on top of his knees.

She thought for a second before walking into her kitchen.

A few minutes later, Lucy came back to the living room and placed down a plate of Omelette she had just now.

The boy still flinched at every sound he heard, but perhaps he wasn’t so afraid of Lucy that he raised his head a little.

His pair of adorable eyes glanced at her briefly, sparkling when the light hit it. Lucy recognized the meaning behind it. He was curious why she placed the food in front of him.

"It’s your reward for being brave today."

Lucy sat down across from him.

The little boy raised his eyes again to look at her and tilted his head.

Even though she said what she said, the little boy did not move to pick up the spoon and fork to start eating.

He just stared at her in silence, waiting.

Finally, Lucy thought of something and felt sickened at what she had just thought of. It couldn’t be that the little boy couldn’t eat without getting permission from the couple.

Lucy tested the waters and told the boy to eat.

And as if slapping her with the harsh truth, the boy really moved his thin arms to pick up the cutlery beside the plate.

Seeing this, Lucy was even afraid that he would break his arms if he lifted them. But contrary to her worries, the little boy grabbed the spoon tightly in his hand, filled up the spoon, and brought the food to his mouth.

"Wait--!"

Lucy wanted to warn the boy that the food was still hot, but the boy had already started to chew with his cheeks bulging.

What’s more worrying was that the boy didn’t seem to feel the burn!

Lucy stared wide-eyed at him for a second before hurrying to tell the boy to slow down and let the food to cool down.

Hearing her words, the boy didn’t seem to understand why she said this. He innocently looked at her.

"Doesn’t it burn you?"

The boy shook his head as a response.

Lucy frowned. She moved to sit beside him and, while being stared at by the boy, she asked him, "Can you open your mouth and let me see inside?"

The boy hesitated for a second, and just as Lucy was about to tell him it was his choice to refuse, he opened his mouth wide and let her see his mouth.

His mouth was not in great condition. His teeth were misaligned, and some were missing. And most worrisome were the cuts in it.

Lucy firmly told herself she could not allow this child to return to that couple. Even if they were his parents, they weren’t deserving to be called one!

Seeing the boy glancing back at the food on the coffee table, Lucy knew he still wanted to eat.

Lucy was worried that eating the food she cooked would worsen the condition of his mouth. So, she said, "Don’t eat this."

But the boy misunderstood her, and a look of hurt and sadness appeared on the boy’s face.

She immediately reworded what she said, "Eating this will hurt your mouth. Come with me to the hospital and let the doctor have it checked. Then I’ll let you eat whatever you want."

The boy listened obediently to her. But he couldn’t understand anything she said. Especially the terms ’hospital’ and ’doctor’, having not been exposed to these things before.

The only thing he understood was that she would let him eat anything he wanted!

Thus, he nodded his head and agreed to her.

...

At the same time, Landon was inside his office and was still thinking about the incident at the cafe.

Despite not finding what he wanted, he still held some doubts and wondered why he was so sure the figure he chased after earlier was Lucy.

Besides, Lucy shouldn’t be in Grid City. That, he was sure of.

Since Lucy disappeared, he had not stopped looking for her. He even met with the owners of the airports in the city and made sure that if Lucy returned, he would be informed immediately.

So, there was no way Lucy could be in Grid City.

However, Landon would have never imagined that Lucy was already in the city for a week now, and she was also using another identity.
