Chapter 24: She’s Back
Chapter 24: She’s Back
Landon put on his coat and lifted his head.
A knock had come in, and after a few seconds, the head of the same employee from earlier poked out between the doors. His expression still showed fear toward his boss. But Landon merely glanced at him briefly before ensuring his tie was fixed around his neck.
"What is it this time?" Landon prompted the employee to begin what he wanted to tell him.
After getting permission to speak, the employee said, "Sir, the meeting with Mr. Baek from Jinju Construction will start in an hour."
"Postpone it." Landon turned around to face him. "Actually, reschedule my plans for these upcoming two days."
"W-why, sir?"
"Because I have an urgent business to attend."
Urgent business? What was more urgent than meeting the executive director of a top construction company in the country? David, the employee, wanted to know what had made Landon change his plans so abruptly. But, alas, he had no courage to voice out his questions.
None of the employees in the Westwood corporation would dare to.
The sudden notice of his new plans had David and some other employees running back and forth to arrange a smooth flight for Landon toward Virela City.
As Landon walked toward his private plane, David’s phone suddenly rang. He exchanged a few words with the caller, and after hanging up, he hurried to Landon’s side.
"Sir, wait!" When Landon halted his steps, David said, "The interior painter we hired just arrived in the city. Should we have them work on the building immediately?"
Landon brought his brows together, a sign he was getting impatient with the delay. His company was getting more massive and in demand, and thus, a new building was built in Grid City. The construction lasted more than two years and it was finished just a month ago. However, they couldn’t open it just yet.
For the finishing touch before the opening day, Landon hired an interior painter.
He had searched far and wide, but none had suited his standard.
Only this one particular painter he had come across on the internet had met the checks on his list.
Landon contemplated it. This painter had kept him waiting for a month even when he offered a lot of money. They even dared to refuse to work for him if Landon could not wait.
But he couldn’t back down because the painter’s art pieces were excellent.
"Have them work tomorrow and arrange a place for them to stay."
After he said that, Landon went up to the plane.
***
At the same time.
A woman walked while pushing the suitcase forward. Her appearance was beautiful and bright. A yellow cashmere scarf was wrapped around her neck, and she looked charming like a cute doll.
The air inside the airport was cold, and there was a lot of noise coming from the people ushering around. However, her beautiful and elegant appearance was not hindered by these.
Rather, a lot of people couldn’t help but turn their heads whenever she walked past them.
The woman stopped in the middle of walking and fished out her phone from the pocket inside her long coat. Then, brought it beside her ear.
On the other side of the line was a lively voice. "Miss Grey, it’s done!"
Lucy asked casually, "You weren’t found out?"
"Of course not! It was sent out anonymously, so there’s no way for them to lead to us."
Lucy said, "...Oh."
The person on the other end was not disappointed with her lack of praise. "By the way, why did you suddenly decide to move? Isn’t your business doing great in Virela? Why did you want to work in Grid City?"
Lucy didn’t respond to the question immediately.
Many people have asked her the same when they heard she was moving to Grid City. Her business in Virela was booming, and she was expanding it around the world. As a successful woman who was earning millions now, there was no need to continue her work. She could focus on her daughter and getting a peaceful life.
Even Vanessa stopped her from coming back to the city where all her suffering had begun.
"Hello?"
Lucy continued walking as she answered, "I have an unfinished business in this city."
"What business? Can I join?"
As she approached the exit, Lucy spotted a woman in a business suit and ponytail in the arrival hall in front. A placard that read ’Corone’, a pseudonym she had taken over when she became a renowned painter, was in the woman’s hand.
She replied perfunctorily, "Unfortunately, this is something only I can do."
After hanging up, she confidently walked up to the woman.
As she got closer, Lucy saw the woman talking to the man beside her.
The woman grumbled, "I can’t believe I’m here to pick up someone instead of working in the office! When are they coming out anyway?"
Beside her, the man said, "I don’t know... didn’t you check the notice?"
The woman shook her head. She lied, "Anyway, they shouldn’t be out in another hour. I’m hungry; we should eat first and come back."
The man hesitated. "What if they come out when we leave?"
"Then, you can just wait here!" The woman stomped her feet and pushed the placard to the man. "I’m not waiting here for a nobody. And if they leave, the office can find another painter. Hmph!"
She wondered why the company hired a painter from another country. And it was even someone whom she had never heard of. Corone? What kind of name is that? The woman was certain that it was someone who got lucky to land the job.
The man frowned. He was uncertain whether he should stay or follow his colleague. But his stomach clenched at nothing, forcing him to chase after her.
Their words naturally reached Lucy’s ears, who was just a few feet away from them.
She watched them leave and choose their own selfish desire over picking her up and doing their job.
A touch of disdain appeared in Lucy’s eyes.
Surreally, nothing has changed. Three years have passed, yet the people she met and got involved with were still the same. They remained unchanged. Always so arrogantly ignorant and prejudiced.
Although the people who came to pick her up were gone, Lucy couldn’t be bothered with waiting for them to come back.
She grew up in the city anyway, and she intended to find a place immediately so she could start her plans.
Lucy walked to the exit and stopped to take in the cold breeze of wind. She wondered how everyone who had belittled and mocked her in the past was doing now.
Every day, she prayed they were living their life to the fullest and were at the peak of their success, just so she could drag them to the lowest ground and have them crawl on their own dirt.
For three years, she hid and waited.
Now she’s back.
It’s her turn to start the game.
