The Billionaire's Ex-Wife Returns! -
Chapter 10: A Room Away
Chapter 10: A Room Away
Behind the walls of the closet, Lucy held her breath.
She hated her vulnerability and hated the fact that she couldn’t find the strength to come out and slap him.
It didn’t matter to her that he chose his first love for her. That, she could understand. They were in a compensated marriage. True to paper, but still, a fake one. It was her fault for letting his gentleness and affection cloud her mind and letting his presence walk all over her until she fell deep into their charades.
And he had every right to choose the one he had loved over her, the woman he had paid to play the role of his wife just to make Yvonne return to him.
But Landon had no right to trespass on her best friend’s home. She had never seen him like this. Not even when Yvonne tried to hide from him when she first returned to the country.
So why did he come here? They were done.
The divorce agreement has their signatures now.
She expected he wouldn’t waste time to hand it over to the civil office to have it processed. Yet, here he was.
"I don’t know who you’re talking about." The tremendous pressure he was pouring on her shook Vanessa’s voice. She had never met someone like Landon. Yes, she met wealthy and influential people. But the authority that Landon commanded with just his appearance overwhelmed her.
And Lucy compared him to an angel?
Just where? Where did she see that in him?
All Vanessa could see was the devil looking down on her, seeing through her lies.
"You know who I’m talking about." Landon didn’t believe her lie.
Initially, he hesitated to enter the apartment. He was neither a cur nor raised bastardly to enter a woman’s living abode. And in no normal circumstances would he dare to pressurize a woman he had met the first time. That behavior was something he had frowned upon and loathed to become.
Yet, the moment he smelled her scent, the unique smell of shampoo made of vanilla and mint, snapped his sanity. That’s all he needed to know that Lucy was here.
He would never mistake her scent for another.
Landon moved his eyes across the room in front of him. "Lucy, if you’re here. I know you’re inside. But please, come out and talk to me."
The door was open, and he could just walk over to find her inside. But something inside him was stopping him. He just knew that the moment his foot crossed the threshold of that door, she would never look at him ever again.
So, he stood there, outside, watching the darkened room for any sign of Lucy. A sign that she would want to see him as much as he did.
And he imagined, for a fleeting, painful moment, that she would walk out of the room and tell him why she left without a word.
"Like I said, I don’t know why you are doing this! Get out or I’ll call the police!" Vanessa pushed him away, expecting him to resist.
But Landon didn’t.
He let himself be pushed as he hit the wall behind him. His eyes never lose their focus on the room in front of him, waiting and waiting for his wife to come out and look at him. It was as if any physical attack on him didn’t affect him. Anything anyone hurled at him didn’t matter.
Vanessa paused. Her face contorted between relief and pain. She was afraid he would find the strength and use it to force his way in. Thus, she closed the door behind her and glared at him. She had never witnessed such audacity from someone.
Wasn’t it enough that he broke her best friend’s heart? Why did he have to come here demanding to see her?
Why does he have to show an expression that looked so miserable and broken that he would shatter like a glass with one touch?
Although she wanted to know why that was, Vanessa didn’t want Landon any closer to Lucy. The amount of stress and pain he gave her the moment he started to consider giving her up for his first love was not enough of a reason for her to feel sympathy for him.
"Just go. Take your goons away and leave!"
Landon stood there for a minute, even after she shoved them away.
As they passed by some rooms and landed in the living room, Landon stopped and looked back at the corridor that leads to the room again. And when he saw no one coming out of it, he finally lowered his gaze, his feet feeling the coldness as it started to become numb.
He turned around, walking at his own pace. It was slow, his feet dragging as he instinctively followed the path towards the door. The woman named Vanessa stood by the living room, eyeing them with hawk-like eyes as she crossed her arms.
She was being too obvious. Landon knew she lied about not knowing who he was looking for. But rather than be mad at her for lying and keeping Lucy from him, he was glad and relieved.
At least Lucy found a reliable friend who would protect her.
Standing by the door, Landon turned one last time.
He stared at the woman, who acted like a guardian deity, and said, "Tell her I’ll be waiting for her under the oak tree where I first met her. Don’t forget."
The response he received was the shutting close in his face.
Closing his eyes, Landon pressed his forehead against the door, and a long, shaky sigh came out of him when suddenly, his phone started to ring.
Landon didn’t have the energy to take out his phone and look at who was calling. He ignored it as he rested against the door. If anyone were to look at him right now, they would’ve assumed he was a pathetic ex-boyfriend who was ruthlessly dumped.
But honestly, they couldn’t be too far off from their thoughts.
The ringing sound came once again after it didn’t get answered. This time, it didn’t come from his phone.
Alaric pulled up his phone and looked at the caller’s name. His heart almost tipped out of his chest when he saw it was Landon’s mother.
"Sir, it’s your mother." Alaric didn’t dare keep this from his boss.
"Tell her I want to be alone."
Alaric finally answered and reported what his boss had told him to his mother. After a while, he finally disconnected their call.
Turning to him, Alaric took a few moments to say a word. But he needed to say it.
So, he said, "Sir, your mother called because Miss Leblanc just collapsed, and she said they needed you there."
