Chapter 159: DISAPPOINTMENTS

Chapter 159: DISAPPOINTMENTS

"It’s Leighton?" The person behind the knock said, just as Fay began contemplating what to do.

She hurried to the door, and opened it. Leighton walked into the room and immediately grabbed her in a hug.

"I was so worried about you," she said, squeezing her lovingly.

"I’m fine. So glad you’re here. You have no idea."

Alexander, who had stepped out from the kitchen, silently watched the best friends.

When Leighton opened her eyes, their gazes locked.

He felt some shame wash over him. His decision to move had been really selfish.

They had always lived together since moving to the States. But he had let his feelings for another woman drive a wedge between them.

He felt shame, but he couldn’t help it.

"I’m glad you’re alright," Leighton said, her eyes pulling away from Alexander, and travelling the lengths of Fay’s body.

"And I’m glad you’re here."

"I brought your things?" She lifted her hands, so Fay could see.

"Thank you. You did really well."

"So cute," Leighton laughed, ruffling Fay’s hair with her free hands.

Together, they turned around. Alexander, who had been watching, smiled.

"I’m glad you’re here. Fay was just asking me to call you."

"Yeah, you needed her to tell you to call me," she replied.

Her response caused an awkward silence to descend on the room.

Fay suddenly felt in the middle of the feud. Leighton liked Alexander, and he liked her.

If she could make him see just how much Leighton liked him, maybe he could readjust his feelings.

A phone began to buzz, and Fay moved on hearing its sound.

"Yeah, that’s all you. It kept ringing throughout the night. I even had to charge it so the battery life wouldn’t drain," Leighton explained.

"Did you check who called?" She asked, staring at the phone that kept ringing on Leighton’s hands.

"Yeah Gabrielle called. Alice also called. Then there’s another number that doesn’t have an Id. It called the most," she looked into the screen and her eyes widened. "Look, it’s even calling now."

Stretching the phone to Fay, she was amazed when her friend jerked behind.

"What’s that?" She asked.

"I just don’t think I should answer that."

She already knew who it was. He wasn’t joking when he said he wasn’t going to let the fact she was married deter him from pursuing after her.

"Are you still married?" A voice in her head questioned.

A very good question, she thought.

"Why? Is it someone disturbing you? Your aunt, perhaps?" Leighton pressed for a response.

"No." She shook her head.

"If you need me to scare them off, I could do it." Alexander stepped forward.

"No!" She said speedily. "Please no," she shook her head. "I don’t think you should. I’ll handle it myself."

She grabbed the phone and proceeded down the path Alexander had told her she’d find a room.

On spotting the guest room, her thumping heart grew louder in her ears.

She opened the door and walked into the room. Carefully closing it behind her, she walked to the edge of the bed, and plopped on it.

Taking a deep breath, she answered the call with shaky fingers.

"Hello.

"You finally decided to answer me, gorgeous. I’m glad."

She heard his bubbly voice and was compelled to smile.

For a billionaire, he wasn’t sadistic. He was proud alright, but not in an off-putting way. She would describe it as cocky confidence.

"I wasn’t with my phone all night," she said after taking out a few seconds to contemplate telling the truth or not.

"I know you’re telling the truth. It wasn’t just because you didn’t want to talk to me. I don’t think I’m that unpleasant."

"I don’t think I would have answered your call even if I was with my phone," she said to counter his cockiness, but couldn’t help the smile widening on her face.

"You would be with your husband, perhaps? I would understand then. But he reads to me like someone who would rather work than stay at home with his wife."

The smile faded off her face, and panic jolted her body.

"He reads to you? Do you know my husband?" She asked, holding her breath.

"Of course not. I’m just saying what I feel."

"Well you’ll be wrong." She found herself defending Ace for no reason other than habit.

That was what she chose to tell herself, instead of the truth.

"Really? So I take it you had a goodnight then? Because I was going to send you some ice cream to cheer you up, if not."

Her face lit up again. "Why would you think I like ice cream? And how exactly did you plan on getting one to me?"

"Simple. We will meet up."

She scoffed. "I think there’s a thin line between self-confidence and arrogance. You’re threading on it right now."

"Wait, you don’t believe we would meet? You’re a business woman even though you say you don’t want to go into the business of selling your perfumes. Perhaps you would have reconsidered if I told you I would love to invest half a billion into your hard work."

"What?!"

"I could make it a billion, but that would be a really foolish business decision. I may like you a lot, but I can’t afford to be foolish."

He was a magnetic man, she admitted to herself. He knew the right things to say. Even when it sounded like he was tooting his own horn, it didn’t seem offensive.

She was confused about this character, if she was keeping it a buck.

"I couldn’t accept that even though I did want to monetize my handwork. Unfortunately, I don’t want to. Also, I don’t think I would even have the time to engage you. I’m starting a new project that requires all my attention."

"Ouch! That hurt, Fay. Which I find really sexy. I don’t get burned most times. It’s nice that it is coming from someone I absolutely refuse to let go of. We’ll see, Fay. That’s a promise."

He ended the call, and she was left shell shocked.

A knock sounded on the door, jolting her out of her puzzlement.

"Fay?" Leighton walked into the room.

"Hey," she said, managing a smile.

"Are you okay?" She asked, taking a seat beside her.

"Do you know who Xylon Bass is?"

"The name sounds very familiar. Like one of those filthy rich people."

"Yeah, he’s supposedly a billionaire."

"Xylon Bass! Yeah, I know him. Not personally. I remember the nurses at work fawning over him, whilst watching him on the screen. Apparently, he’s just as hot as Ace when it comes to the ladies."

She swallowed hard to rid off the shivering that was gearing to overcome her body.

"He met me, and now won’t let me go. Even after I told him I was married."

"I’m actually not surprised at that. Your circle is different now, so you’ll meet men like him. But I’m just wondering how he knows you’re married to Ace Atticus and still pursues you. I know they’re business rivals, but going after you is just taking the rivalry to a new height."

"He doesn’t know I’m married to Ace. Do you think he’ll leave me alone if I tell him that?" She asked with heavy desperation in her voice.

Leighton gave her a pitiful look. Even when they were young, she had never appreciated the lustful look from men. And one thing they did was openly gawk at her.

She had the kind of beauty that cast spells on men, and it wasn’t her fault. Yet, she wouldn’t stop blaming herself for these men’s inability to control themselves in the presence of a pretty girl.

"I don’t think so. You’re really pretty, Fay. I know even as kids, you found it difficult to believe everyone that told you so. But you’re really gorgeous. In that world, you’re the kind of woman they would die to have in their arms."

"But I don’t want to be in anyone’s arms. I just want to be left alone."

"I know darling," she hugged her. "It’s not easy to be desired like you are, I can imagine. Especially for someone who grew up all their life hearing they were a walking contradiction. An ugly thing, whilst still being a vessel of lust. God, I wish I could meet you Aunt. I would slap the audacity off her cheeks."

"Don’t say that," she whispered.

"I don’t care. She’s the reason for all of this. You deserve better, Fay. So much better."

Silence stretched between them for a few seconds.

Fay didn’t know if they were right when they continuously said she deserved better. Perhaps, she got everything she deserved.

"There’s something I want to tell you. Promise you won’t be mad," Leighton said, cutting through her self loathing thoughts.

"Sure. What is it?" She moved into a sitting position.

"I told Ace about your whereabouts."

"He called?"

"No, I called him."

Her face fell. "Of course you did," she said, unable to hide the disappointment that took over her voice.
