Chapter 119: CURVE BALL

Chapter 119: CURVE BALL

Grant burst into the office before Ace could dash out.

"Sir Lan—" he paused when he saw Ace in the room. "Good, sir Ace. I was just coming to ask sir Landon your whereabouts. I saw the Mrs car," he said, slightly out of breath.

Ace paused on his heel, and allowed his gaze to rest on Grant. "You saw who?"

"Mrs Christine. Her entourage has arrived."

Reflexively, his eyes went to his wrist at the same time Makayla screamed, "Mum is here?"

"Miss Kayla? Good morn—afternoon," he corrected when he saw the time on the big clock in the room was headed to 1:pm.

"Hello Grant. Good to see you. How come mum arrived this early?"

"I don’t know, but we don’t have time to waste. I’ll grab the wine, Ace, take the fragrance. We need to go welcome her before Celine gets there," Landon said, already running around to grab files and documents.

"What about Fay? You said—"

"Ace, snap out of it please. I understand you’re concerned about your wife, but you can think of her later. This is time for business. Except you’ve changed your mind, and want to relinquish control to Celine," he said behind his shoulders.

Ace shook his head. "No. You’re right. We’ll deal with Christine first, then I’ll find Fay."

"I’m just jealous I’m not this Fay girl," Makayla said, rising to her feet. "She gets to have this gorgeous man to herself? Not fair!" She pouted.

"Makayla, I adore you, but now’s not the time. Tell me, do you think your mum is in a good mood?" Ace asked as he picked up the gift bag.

Somehow, he could still smell Fay. He wondered where she was, and why she refused to stay and wait for him.

Celine had to have told her something. Something horrible enough for her to leave in such a hurry.

He was only just realising how excited he was to see her. Although they had seen that morning and even kissed, he hadn’t been able to keep her out of his mind.

But he had to. Landon was right. Business had no business being mixed with pleasure. Pleasure could come later. Pleasure he was getting tired of denying both himself, and Fay.

"Sorry baby boy, no handouts. You’ll have to find out mummy’s mood on your own. I’ll only be present to watch you do your thing. Hopefully I get wet enough after your presentation to stop by my fiance’s office."

"Makayla!" Landon and Ace both called at the same time.

Grant, pretending to be focused on the document he was placing inside the briefcase, almost spilled the papers to the ground.

"What?!" She shrugged, a small flirty smile playing around the corners of her lip.

"There’s no saving her, bro," Landon shook his head, as he straightened up with the bottle of carefully wrapped wine in his hand. "Let’s just go."

"Yeah, let’s go," Ace said.

"What guys?" She followed after them, laughing her heart out.

As much as Ace hated to go towards the main entrance of the hotel, he had no other choice than to do it. To welcome Christine, he had to go through the numbers of people stopping just to greet him.

"Good afternoon Mr Ace."

"How are you doing, sir Ace?"

"Great to see you at the hotel, master Ace!"

All variations of these echoed in his ears as he made the short trip to the entrance of the hotel.

But as he stepped into the lobby, he found Christine and her bodyguards being ushered in by Celine.

He took a deep breath, noting she had gotten to her before him.

But he wasn’t going to give her the luxury of thinking she had rattled him. Whatever it was she had up her sleeve, he was going to give her a run for her money.

"Christine!" He called when he stopped before her.

"My beautiful boy!" She stepped forward, and kissed him on both sides of his cheeks. "You grow more handsome by the second. Tell me your secret, my darling?" The blonde beauty who had a physical structure so similar to his aunt, it puzzled him how they were so characteristically different, said.

"After you tell me what fountain of youth you drank from. Give me that secret and I’ll forever be at your service," he said, and followed his compliment up with a charming smile.

A blush crept up her face, as she quickly averted her gaze. "You charmer! You’ve not changed a day!" She said, air fanning herself.

Celine Atticus rolled her eyes. She couldn’t deny the boy had the charms of his father. But their similarities ended with their looks. While his father was more docile and easier to manipulate, he was witty and just very annoying.

"I see my Aunt has already welcomed you. Sorry for the delay on my part," he said.

"Don’t sweat it. With the work you do at Spades, I’m shocked you still have time to run the hotel. Why don’t you leave it to your Aunt? You don’t want to age with all that work, do you?"

He laughed. "Come with me Christine, then we can dissect all the questions you have," he said, and lifted his arm.

Her eyes sparkled as she linked hers around his. Behind them, Celine’s frown turned into a scowl. Just like that, he had stepped in and whisked her away, undoing all she had done in just seconds.

However, she wasn’t the type to fret. There was still more of this day to go through before a winner was declared.

"Mummy!" Makayla announced in a singsong voice, as Ace made to step forward with the woman in his arms.

She paused again, and frowned. "You silly child! How come you arrived before me?"

"Mum?!" Her eyes widened as she communicated with it. "There are people present," she said between her teeth.

"Whatever!" Christine said, and continued forward with Ace.

"Would you look at that? You’d think he was her child and not me." Shaking her head, she followed behind them.

Ace led Christine to the room prepared for the meeting. Unlinking his hand, he opened the door for her to go in first. She did with a smile of gratitude on her face.

"Have I ever told you how I could never stay in another hotel anytime I’m in the states because I just love the ambience of the Blue Sea?" she asked, taking a seat.

"You never shut up about it. Made daddy think twice about building a hotel here," Makayla said, finding a seat to also perch on.

"As he should. But your father is not why I’m here, so all talks of him cease starting now," she turned to Ace and smiled. "What do you have for me, Mr Atticus?"

Ace waited for Grant to drop the files and excuse himself before he spoke. But as he opened his mouth, Celine stepped forward with a bottle in her hand..

"Where are your manners, Ace? We can’t possibly start business without offering one of our biggest clients a gift," she presented the wine to her with a smile on her face. "Here you go, Christine. Prepared with much love on behalf of the Atticus."

"Why thank you, Celine. It’s my favourite too!" She grinned from ear to ear, as she accepted the wine.

Ace quickly communicated with Landon through his eyes. It was the same wine Landon had bought, so they couldn’t give it to her in order not to look like copycats.

But he had handed the gift bag to Landon before they got to Christine. And so he waited as his best friend stepped forward, and gave him the bag.

Celine, who had a smug smile on her face as she watched Christine brag about the wine to her daughter, instantly frowned when she saw the same bag she had seen Fay holding in Ace’s hand.

The brat had told her it was a gift for Ace. She held her breath, waiting to see what he was going to do with it.

"I thought we were going to give gifts after the deal was secured, but since we’re doing it now, I have something for you as well," he said, and presented her with the bag.

She had barely accepted it when the fragrance hit her nose. "No way this is what I think it is," she said, and began unwrapping the gift like it was a Christmas present.

A piece of paper dropped to the ground, and she picked it up.

"What’s that?" She asked, bringing it to her face.

Ace’s eyes mirrored the same question. He didn’t expect for there to be a note.

"Your chart says this fragrance is going to open the portals for the love you deserve. It is written in the stars, and would soon be in your heart." with every word she read in her heart, her smile broadened.

When she was done, she folded the note carefully, and placed it in her suit pocket.

Returning her gaze to the box, she opened it, and found the perfume. She brought it to her nose and sniffed.

"Thank you Ace," she said with her eyes closed as the fragrance consumed her.

The shame from being easily deceived by someone as naive as Fay made Celine Atticus clench her fist in a ball, as her eyes shot daggers at Ace.
