Chapter 183: Chapter 182: Imperial Green in a Plastic Bag
"Whether you accept it is your business, and whether I give it is mine. I will continue looking for a painting that suits your taste better. As for this one, if you really don’t like it, just throw it away."
Edwin Blake finished speaking and stood without saying another word.
Ivy River, of course, is aware of Jonah Wiles’s particular hobby.
She stepped forward to put the painting away and whispered to Jonah, "This painting is worth a fortune. Since he’s willing to give it to you, you should keep it. If you truly don’t like it, then sell it and use the money to buy something you do like."
"Do I look like I need his money?" Jonah Wiles shouted, still angry.
Ivy gently patted his back and continued to coax, "You can’t refuse something that’s delivered to your door. Since you’re the elder, you don’t need to reciprocate Edwin’s gift."
"No! Throw it away, I can’t afford to accept a gift from President Blake."
Ivy chuckled and deliberately said, "Fine, if you really don’t like it, I’ll take it back home. I could use a painting anyway, saves me the money."
Jonah instinctively replied, "No need!"
After realizing what he’d said, he lightly coughed, "You’re so far away in Seaton. I’ll have to prepare some local specialties for you to take back. There’s no space in your car; let’s leave it here at the old house for now. You can take it next time you visit."
Ivy smiled wryly, "Alright, then let’s leave this gift in the room for now."
The painting truly was priceless.
She never expected that the person who bought it for an astronomical price was Edwin Blake.
Could it be that Edwin is also aware of the painting’s secret?
"Take it slow, don’t be clumsy, place it well in my room. Just leave it on my bed."
Jonah couldn’t help but instruct, his eyes fixed on the painting until he couldn’t see it anymore before he shifted his gaze.
He turned to Ivy, "Didn’t you prepare a gift for me?"
Ivy replied calmly, "I’ve already given you a gift. Fatty and Emmy are the best gifts I could give you."
Jonah rolled his eyes helplessly, "That was a gift from Gale Wiles."
"The children were born by me and brought to Riverland by me, I just had Gale accompany them out, aiming to give you a double surprise."
Jonah snorted coldly, "Surprise? More like a shock. If it weren’t for my good health, who could handle a long-lost daughter suddenly showing up out of nowhere? Oh, with two kids in tow!"
Ivy casually retorted, "Then you can choose not to acknowledge them. Did I beg you to recognize them?"
"You!" Jonah was downright furious, but suddenly thought of something.
He sighed helplessly, "Forget it. It’s good enough you’re back. I can’t demand too much from you."
Ivy: ???
"Dad, you sound like you’re speaking to an unfilial child, saying ’it’s fine as long as you don’t ruin everything.’ I’ve just been caught up in research abroad for the past few years, and as soon as I got the chance to return, I rushed back to see you. Don’t keep finding fault with me."
Jonah chuckled lightly at her words, staring intently at Ivy.
He didn’t speak, but his eyes seemed to say everything.
Don’t think I don’t know that you went to Seaton first, only deciding to come see me for my birthday celebration.
Feeling guilty under his gaze, Ivy changed the subject, "Dad, how can that be? I definitely picked out a gift for you. Although they are my biggest gifts for you, I have other small tokens as well. I hope you’ll like them."
With that, she started looking for her plastic bag.
Gale Wiles sighed and said, "Here it is... Is this what you’re looking for?"
Ivy smiled and snatched it from him, casually throwing it into Jonah’s arms.
"Take a look, see if you like it. Even if you don’t, you have to say you do."
Jonah looked at the plain plastic bag, his mouth twitching involuntarily.
"Of course, of course, whatever you give, Dad will like."
Tired from standing, Ivy was about to sit down when she turned and found Edwin Blake standing before her like a wall.
Annoyed, she pushed him aside, "You’ve finished giving your gift, so why are you still hanging around here? Stop taking up space."
Caught off guard, Edwin stumbled when pushed.
Isla immediately rushed to support Edwin, angrily shouting, "Ivy, why did you push him?"
Ivy’s lips curled slightly, as she bent down and spoke softly, "Isla, a good dog doesn’t block the way."
With that, she turned and walked away.
Infuriated by her words, Isla was about to raise her hand to hit her.
But Ivy seemed to have eyes on the back of her head and said, "If you hit me, you’re done for. This is my home, my territory, not Seaton."
Isla, clutching her arm, looked shocked, "Edwin! You?"
Edwin himself couldn’t fathom why he’d stopped her.
It seemed instinctual.
He shook himself out of it and spoke softly, "This is someone else’s birthday party, don’t make things look bad."
"But she insulted me!"
Isla demanded stubbornly.
Edwin took a deep breath, "This is Riverland, not Seaton. If something happens, I can’t guarantee your safety."
Isla’s eyes widened in disbelief.
"What are you saying?"
Ivy paused, turned, and coolly observed, "Edwin said if you cause trouble in Riverland, he can’t protect you, it’s not that he won’t, but that you don’t deserve it, understood?"
Isla got even angrier at this.
Jonah sternly admonished, "Today is my birthday celebration. If anyone insists on causing trouble, don’t blame me—Jonah Wiles—for becoming your enemy in the future."
With that statement, everyone fell silent.
It was rare for Elder Wiles to invoke such words in decades.
The first time was to save Gale Wiles’s mother, issuing a life-or-death order at the hospital. His wife barely survived and lived for five more years.
The second time was now.
Ivy sure had some pull, a foster daughter ranking higher than a biological position?
"Put your hand down," Edwin lightly commanded.
Reluctantly, Isla lowered her hand, "Edwin! I was bullied..."
"You had a rough time today, I’ll transfer some money to you so you can go abroad and relax, buy what you like."
Edwin finished and instructed Harry Ross, "Transfer fifty million to Isla, from my personal account."
Isla held back her excitement, reluctantly saying, "Okay, I can’t let you be embarrassed. Actually, I don’t need the money. After all, my feelings for you are sincere and clear."
Ivy couldn’t help but chuckle at this.
Raising an eyebrow, she casually muttered, "Truly doesn’t need the money~~"
"Ivy, what do you mean!"
Ivy ignored her, pulling a pipe from a red plastic bag on the table, she whined to Jonah.
"Why’d you throw my gift onto the table! It makes me mad! Old man, do you like the pipe? It’s custom-made just for you, exuding a regal style no one else can match."
In one sentence, she used two tones.
Jonah nervously patted his chest, "I like it, how could I not? Anything my daughter gives, I like." Even if it’s just junk, I like it.
Ivy pouted and teased, "I only put it in a plastic bag because I didn’t have a box!"
As she spoke, she pulled out a piece of Imperial Green from the bag.
She tossed it lightly into Jonah’s hands.
