Chapter 1055: Chapter 1046: Farewell to the Old, Welcome the New (4)
When Qin Baizhou called, Bo Yan was also present. In fact, Xia Siyu never hid her contact with him, nor was there any need to. She chose to continue signing with Huixing for two reasons: firstly, she was used to working with Qin Baizhou and trusted his capabilities; secondly, he had persuaded the company to agree to her demands, leaving no further room for negotiation. Moreover, Qin Baizhou had stopped pressuring her afterward, retreating appropriately and giving her some space.
To be honest, it wasn’t surprising that someone liked her. She had been beautiful since childhood and had long grown accustomed to the admiration of those around her. It was just unexpected that the person would turn out to be Qin Baizhou.
But it didn’t matter. Everything was back on track now. After all, emotions couldn’t be controlled, but rationality could prevent one from getting into awkward situations.
Qin Baizhou kept it simple: “Happy New Year, Siyu.”
Xia Siyu replied, “Happy New Year, Brother Qin.”
Qin Baizhou continued, “Tomorrow’s movie premiere will be quite grand. Dress up beautifully for it.”
Xia Siyu was not the least bit nervous: “I don’t think I have to worry about that.”
Unless her stylist had gone mad, as long as she attended, she was bound to be the most dazzling one there. The one who should be worried was Shang Feifei—the actual lead actress of the film—but it was likely she’d be overshadowed anyway.
Qin Baizhou chuckled. “True, absolutely true. Our Siyu is undoubtedly the queen of beauty. I’ll probably attend tomorrow too, though I won’t join you on stage. Perform well; I have a lot of confidence in this movie.”
Praising her didn’t spark much of a reaction in her, but talking highly of the movie made Xia Siyu quite pleased. As insiders, they had the privilege of watching the final cut before the official release. Xia Siyu and Bo Yan had the chance to watch it as well, but at the time, they were still on vacation, enjoying themselves on an island.
They had confidence in their own acting. Once the performances were solid, everything else was in the director’s hands. Wang Ju, the director, seemed to be very invested in this film; otherwise, he wouldn’t have joined them for the Lunar New Year’s Eve gala or participated in promotional events alongside them.
“Thank you, Brother Qin,” she said.
“No need to be so polite. You’re the company’s cash cow. If you do well at the box office, we can boast about it in future promotions too.”
The official green light for Huixing’s public listing had already been granted, and their IPO was scheduled for shortly after the New Year. Xia Siyu, undoubtedly one of their top-tier artists, was a significant focus of their expectations for this movie. The hope was that the stock price would enjoy a nice surge at the opening.
Interestingly enough, Xia Siyu appreciated the way Qin Baizhou openly referred to her as a “cash cow.” It underscored their working relationship solidly. For once, her response felt more earnest: “The box office doesn’t matter much to me. If we could snag an award, I’d be more thrilled.”
Movies of this commercial nature rarely garnered significant awards recognition, even when directed by someone like Wang Ju. However, in recent years, there had been fewer great movies. Even well-performed commercial films had started gaining attention and nominations, with some even winning awards.
Although Xia Siyu aspired to win Best Actress, securing a Best Supporting Actress award would still make her quite happy. After all, some recognition was better than none, right?
Her fans might not want her to play second fiddle, and the company wasn’t too keen on it either. But she didn’t mind. As long as she could act well in good films, that was enough for her.
“Don’t worry. We’ll try our best to get your submissions in. Of course, it’d be ideal if you could compete for Best Actress.”
Awards were tricky affairs. Beyond acting skills, they often relied on promotions and, sometimes, sheer luck. With bad luck, even great performances could miss out due to strong competition. With good luck, it could just end up being your year.
The submission period for the Gold Oscars this year had already passed. Xia Siyu did have a film entered, though it wasn’t “Storm.” It seemed unlikely she had much of a chance.
Better luck next year, perhaps.
