Chapter 285: Chapter 285: The First Day of School

Finally, under the teachers’ soothing words and guidance, the kids all entered the classroom.

The kids were out of sight.

Standing outside the kindergarten gates, Xiao Fei suddenly felt a sense of emptiness in his heart.

Although Xiao Fei wasn’t around for the first couple of months after the kids were born, ever since reuniting with Tang Yuxin and meeting the kids, he had hardly been apart from them.

Almost every matter involving the three children had been handled directly by Xiao Fei himself.

Their meals and sleeping arrangements, their clothing and playtime, even their education.

But finally, now it was time to entrust them to the teachers.

"Feeling reluctant, huh?"

A male voice suddenly interrupted.

Xiao Fei turned his head to see a man who looked slightly older than him, possibly around the same age as Bai Zheyan.

The man had a cigarette dangling from his lips and a knowing smile on his face, like someone who had "been there."

"I was like this last year when I sent our rascal to kindergarten for the first time, too. Watching him walk into the classroom, disappear from sight, I ended up lingering by the kindergarten gate. Almost got mistaken for a child trafficker by a stranger."

As he spoke, the man offered Xiao Fei a cigarette.

"Want one?"

Xiao Fei hesitated briefly but still accepted the cigarette.

"Sorry, I don’t smoke often. I didn’t bring a lighter. Can I borrow one?"

The man handed over his lighter to Xiao Fei.

"My name’s Xiao Fei. What’s yours, brother?"

"No need to be so formal. The name’s Wang Zhan."

"You look pretty young. Got married early?"

"Yeah, pretty early."

Xiao Fei chuckled, but his gaze still flicked periodically towards the inside of the kindergarten.

Unfortunately, there was nothing he could see anymore.

"The first few days are always like this. The kids are scared, and we, as parents, feel reluctant. But after a few days, it gets better. We’re fathers, after all. We have to move on from this feeling of reluctance quickly."

"If we can’t handle it, there’s no way the kids can either."

"I understand. Thank you for the advice, brother."

Xiao Fei took a deep breath.

He was a strong person at heart. If he didn’t love his kids this much, he wouldn’t have been in such a state now.

Turning around, Xiao Fei suddenly gestured to someone nearby.

Then, under Wang Zhan’s surprised gaze, Zhou Miao walked over.

"Boss."

"I need to leave now. You stay here and watch over the kids. Starting today, as long as they are at school, you and Ning Yi will take turns protecting them in secret."

"Yes, boss. Don’t worry!"

Zhou Miao nodded hurriedly.

Xiao Fei nodded again at Wang Zhan before turning to leave.

Wang Zhan stood there, dumbfounded, watching Xiao Fei’s retreating figure. Then he looked over at Zhou Miao beside him.

After a long while, his mouth opened, and the cigarette fell from it, unnoticed.

"...A bodyguard?!"

When Xiao Fei got home, Xiang Zilan and Little Bei immediately ran over to greet him.

Normally, apart from these two little ones, the kids would also be there.

But now, the house was quiet, with only the sounds from Xiang Zilan and Little Bei. No other noises.

His wife was at work, and the kids were at school.

"Sigh..."

Sighing, Xiao Fei shook his head, suddenly feeling a bit awkward.

Back when the kids were around, he had often thought about how nice it would be once they grew up and started school...

He’d finally have plenty of time entirely for himself.

But now that it had actually come to pass, Xiao Fei found himself wishing he could still hear the noisy chatter of those little ones around him.

Walking into the study, Xiao Fei made himself a cup of tea, collected his thoughts, and began self-studying.

Now that the kids were in kindergarten, per his agreement with the professor, he would need to start going to the university lab from time to time.

Afternoon.

Xiao Fei arrived at the kindergarten gate early.

Although he could have sent Ang Zhoumiao or Ning Yi to pick up the kids, Xiao Fei wanted to do it personally.

At least for the initial period, he insisted on personally dropping off and picking up the kids every day.

Originally, Xiao Fei thought arriving half an hour early was already plenty soon, but to his surprise, many parents had come even earlier than him.

Looking at these parents anxiously standing at the kindergarten gate, craning their necks to look inside, Xiao Fei figured most were also parents of new students this year.

Finally, when the school bell rang, the classroom doors opened.

A large group of children came rushing out.

"Daddy...!!"

"Mommy! Mommy!"

"Grandma~!"

Various calls came from the crowd of children.

Unfortunately, the kindergarten gate remained closed, so these children who had spotted their parents in the crowd couldn’t leave just yet.

The teachers all came out and began organizing the children into their respective class lines on the playground outside the classrooms.

Xiao Fei scanned the crowd repeatedly, and soon, he spotted his three kids.

Da Bao was at the very front of his class’s line, his adorable little face set in a serious expression, but his eyes occasionally darted toward the gate. When he spotted Xiao Fei, the corners of his mouth couldn’t help but curl upwards.

Er Bao and San Bao were in the crowd too, eagerly craning their necks toward the kindergarten gate. When they spotted Xiao Fei, San Bao almost broke away from the line altogether.

...

"Alright, let’s start with the youngest class. Kids, stay in your lines. If you see your parents, you can leave with them."

Finally, under the teachers’ instructions, the children stopped clamoring.

The kindergarten gate also opened.

The youngest kids were the first to be picked up.

Xiao Fei, along with the other parents of new students, waited at the kindergarten gate as the teacher went through the roster one by one.

The roster contained the name and photo of each child’s guardian. Parents being called forward were verified to match the pre-registered information before being allowed to take their child home.

Although the process was tedious, it reassured all the parents completely.

Finally...

"The parents of Xiao Xinghe, Xiao Tianshui, and Xiao Qingmeng!"

"I’m here."

Xiao Fei stepped forward to the teacher with the roster.

The teacher, who clearly remembered Xiao Fei, smiled and said, "Xinghe, Tianshui, and Qingmeng were all outstanding today. They didn’t seem like it was their first day of kindergarten at all. Make sure to praise them when you get home."

"Thank you."

"You’re welcome. Alright, Xinghe, Tianshui, Qingmeng, your dad is here. You can go now!"

The three little angels, who had been holding back, finally came toddling over, hurtling into the arms of the crouching Xiao Fei who had opened his arms wide for them.
