Chapter 863: Chapter 0863: A Fart-Smelling Guy
Mother Liuu beckoned Long Fei into their rented place within the small courtyard.
Their home was only a street away from He Yan’s Home, otherwise they might have bumped into each other before.
The furniture in the house was simple, yet the walls were adorned with aged calligraphy and paintings.
The tea set on the table wasn’t ordinary either, with its thin walls and translucent porcelain; it even bore the seal of Qianlong-era manufacture underneath.
Long Fei looked on with curiosity, thinking to himself, had he stumbled into an antique shop?
Liuu Ruyan came over with boiled water and skillfully prepared the tea for Long Fei.
Mother Liuu called out from the kitchen, "Long Fei, have some tea first, and don’t leave until after you’ve eaten."
Long Fei gave Liuu Ruyan a dry laugh and whispered, "Yan’er, it’s your mom asking me to stay, not me insisting on staying, okay?"
"Hey, that’s my mom, do you have to sound so affectionate?" Liuu Ruyan said almost as if she were spitting blood.
"See, I got it wrong in my hurry."
Long Fei slapped his forehead and asked curiously, "Did your family used to run an antique shop or something?"
"How did you know?"
Liuu Ruyan furrowed her brow.
Long Fei laughed, "It’s pretty obvious. Which ordinary household uses porcelain from the Qianlong period to drink tea?"
Playing with the tea set, Liuu Ruyan looked wistful and said, "This was left by my dad, no matter how tough life got, he never thought about selling it. He passed away the year I started junior high. I’ve forgotten other things, but I still remember him teaching me how to pour tea with this set."
"So that’s why you applied to study archaeology?"
Long Fei raised his eyebrows.
"Yes!"
Liuu Ruyan nodded and shared with Long Fei, "All these years, I’ve felt like my father has never left. After I graduate, I’m going to find him, to go to the last place he was."
After uttering this, she startled herself, not knowing why she felt compelled to confide such things to Long Fei.
She didn’t elaborate further, and Long Fei didn’t press for details.
He looked at Liuu Ruyan and thought to himself that this girl was indeed a campus belle with a story.
Mother Liuu quickly whipped up several dishes in the kitchen and soon brought them out, one plate after another.
She instructed Liuu Ruyan, "Ruyan, you start eating with Long Fei! I’ll have the chicken soup ready in no time."
"Auntie, there’s no need to go through so much trouble, let’s eat together?"
Long Fei called out with a smile.
Mother Liuu replied happily, "I’m not hungry, you two go ahead. You’ve helped us so much today, I must properly thank you."
She went back to the kitchen, leaving Long Fei and Liuu Ruyan alone.
Liuu Ruyan passed him a pair of chopsticks, and with a smirk said, "You’re in luck to get to eat the food my mother made."
Long Fei teased, "Why do I feel like you’re so reluctant? If you don’t want me to eat it, I won’t."
Liuu Ruyan pouted, "You have to eat, it would be such a waste to leave all this food."
She handed Long Fei a steamed bun and, having been hungry all afternoon, she started devouring her food, disregarding her image in front of him.
This time, she wasn’t so constrained.
Long Fei never felt shy about eating, and he wolfed down his food as usual.
A plate of twice-cooked pork was finished in no time, and both their chopsticks reached for the last piece of meat at the same time.
Long Fei cleared his throat and said, "Big campus belle, I’m the guest and you’re the host, you should let me have this piece of meat."
"Why should I? I’m the woman and you’re the man, you should let me have it."
Liuu Ruyan stuck out her lip.
Teasing her, Long Fei said, "Aren’t you afraid of getting fat from eating so much meat?"
"What’s it to you? I’m not getting married, if I get fat, then so be it!"
Liuu Ruyan stood her ground.
In her subconscious, this wasn’t just about a piece of meat anymore—it was about who held the authority at home.
Even though she had always rejected this subconscious idea.
"Alright, you can have the meat, just let go of my chopsticks first," Long Fei tricked her.
"That’s more like it."
Liuu Ruyan flashed a triumphant smile, just as she released her chopsticks, Long Fei picked up the meat and stuffed it into his mouth.
Liuu Ruyan glared at him in anger, "You!"
"You didn’t keep your word, you dared to trick me!"
She stood up and reached out to pinch Long Fei.
Long Fei dodged with a laugh, circling around the table with her.
Mother Liuu came out with the chicken soup and, watching the playful scuffle, asked with a laugh, "What are you two up to?"
Liuu Ruyan tattled, "He ate my meat."
Mother Liuu shook her head with a smile, "It’s just a piece of meat; if you want some, I can fry some more for you. Why are you acting like a child?"
"It’s not about the meat."
Liuu Ruyan argued discontentedly.
Long Fei asked smugly from the side, "Then what is the issue?"
Liuu Ruyan gave him a glare and retorted, "This is about respecting women, do you understand that?"
Mother Liuu served Long Fei a bowl of soup and said with a smile, "Long Fei, Ruyan has been spoiled by me since she was little. Please be patient with her."
This sounded like something a mother-in-law would say to her son-in-law.
"Mom, why did you say that to him!"
Liuu Ruyan blushed, her head hanging down.
Long Fei looked at her shy demeanor with a smile, finished the chicken soup, and suggested to Mother Liuu, "Auntie, I think you should not set up your stall for the next couple of days. I’m worried those bad guys might still come to cause trouble, so you should stay home for now. Let’s talk again after I’ve completely dealt with them."
Actually, he wanted to set up a storefront for Mother Liuu, so she wouldn’t have to endure the wind and rain at her stall anymore.
This kind of gesture should not feel like charity.
So he didn’t say this outright, only planning to come up with a reason for Mother Liuu to accept it after everything was taken care of.
Mother Liuu nodded with a hesitant smile, "You’ve really gone out of your way this time. I do not know how to thank you properly."
Long Fei replied with a laugh, "Auntie, please don’t be so formal with me. I’m Yan’er’s classmate, this is all part of what I should do."
"Good, good!"
Mother Liuu looked at her daughter, then looked at Long Fei, and nodded with a content smile.
After dinner, it was getting late.
Long Fei got up to leave, and as Mother Liuu was cleaning up the dishes, she told Liuu Ruyan to see Long Fei out.
The two stepped outside together, and the alley had quieted down.
In the black night, only one or two dim yellow lights still shone.
Long Fei looked at Liuu Ruyan and instructed with a smile, "Go back, and go to sleep early. If you ever run into trouble, just call me, and don’t try to be a hero on your own."
"Why should I call you, acting like you’re something special!"
Liuu Ruyan defiantly pouted her lips and reminded him, "Even though you have saved my mom and me, there’s still nothing possible between us. After tonight, everything will be the same as before. Don’t get any ideas."
Long Fei hadn’t actually thought too much about it; it was Liuu Ruyan who kept overthinking things.
Still, out of curiosity, he couldn’t help but ask, "You really look down on me that much?"
"Of course."
Liuu Ruyan nodded confidently.
"Why? There must be a reason, right?"
Long Fei watched her with a smile.
Liuu Ruyan, with her hands behind her back, stated proudly, "I need to be strong and independent; I won’t be any man’s trophy. So, until I’ve made something of myself, I won’t be in any relationship."
"I see."
Long Fei kept his expression calm and waved goodbye to her.
Just like before, he left without hesitation, without any special reaction.
"Such a conceited guy, would it kill him to say a few more words?"
Liuu Ruyan played with her fingers and muttered quietly, almost wanting to call that guy back for a few more words.
His sudden departure left her feeling emptily hollow inside.
