Chapter 168: Chapter 0168: Meeting Grandfather (Part 3)
After a while, Elder Master Lin came out from the house.
He had just finished his acupuncture session and had been resting in bed.
Hearing the noise outside, he couldn’t help but come out to see what was going on.
Long Fei looked at him, and he sized up Long Fei, curiously asking, "What’s all this about?"
Elder Master Lin was about seventy years old, his hair was gray and thinning, and his complexion was haggard, requiring support as he walked.
He, too, was dressed in traditional Chinese garb, his frame slender as if troubled by some illness.
An Taiyan said to him, "Nothing much. I was just diagnosing this young friend here, and was surprised at his condition, that’s all."
Elder Master Lin took a sip of tea, staring at Long Fei with a light chuckle, "Shanshan, is this young friend visiting our home for the first time?"
Lin Shanshan nodded her head, "Yes, he’s the surprise I told you about."
Long Fei urgently glanced at her, fearing she might spill the beans about their engagement.
But to his dismay, she wrapped her arm around Long Fei’s elbow and introduced him to Elder Master Lin, "Grandfather, I’m in love. What do you think of your granddaughter’s choice?"
Long Fei almost choked on his breath, thinking to himself that this girl really dared to say anything!
Su Yiyi’s mouth also fell open, a hint of slight disappointment on her face.
Elder Master Lin set down his teacup, exchanged a glance with An Taiyan, and couldn’t help but laugh, "This really is quite a surprise. Brother An, look, before we knew it, our granddaughters have found themselves partners!"
An Taiyan stroked his beard with a light laugh, "Indeed, we truly are getting old!"
An Xiaoke sat to one side, curiously sizing up Long Fei. His clothes seemed pretty plain, and he wasn’t particularly handsome—what did Lin Shanshan see in him?
Lin Shanshan stepped on Long Fei’s foot, gesturing to him, "Aren’t you going to introduce yourself to Grandpa quickly?"
Long Fei, pushed into a corner, certainly couldn’t deny it on the spot and make everyone uncomfortable.
He stood up, bowed deeply to Elder Master Lin, and hurriedly introduced himself, "Grandpa, my name is Long Fei, from Longjiawan Village in Suburb County. I came in haste and didn’t bring any gifts, please don’t take offense!"
Lin Shanshan said urgently, "Who says we didn’t bring a gift? Didn’t we just buy one earlier?"
She took out a package and from it she retrieved a solid wooden box, opened it, and placed it on the coffee table, "Grandpa, this is the ginseng we bought for you. It’s from Changbai Mountain, over a hundred years old!"
Inside was something that resembled a radish. Long Fei turned to look at her, not expecting that she’d even purchased this.
He thought to himself that he had been tricked by her again. Indeed, she didn’t expose the matter of their engagement; she had directly hooked him into one.
Elder Master Lin glanced between his granddaughter and Long Fei, and understood everything in his heart.
But he didn’t call Lin Shanshan out, cheerfully telling Auntie Zhang to accept the gift, "You all came; you shouldn’t have brought anything. We have plenty of these things at home, don’t waste money like this anymore!"
"Got it!"
Lin Shanshan giggled, pulling Long Fei to sit down, thinking to herself that this guy really wasn’t good at thinking on his feet—he nearly gave it away.
An Taiyan, looking at their family, said enviously, "Brother Lin is indeed lucky. My Little Ke stays at home all the time; I don’t know when she will bring me a grandson-in-law!"
"Grandpa, what are you talking about!"
An Xiaoke buried her head in embarrassment, amusing everyone greatly.
Seeing there was nothing else, An Taiyan made a bow with his fists and, taking An Xiaoke with him, departed.
No sooner had they left than Lin Yingying came in from outside, glancing around the room with a delicate voice, "What’s the occasion today? It’s so lively!"
Long Fei’s gaze quickly met hers, and Lin Yingying was startled—she hadn’t expected him to be there.
She glanced at Lin Shanshan, who was wearing a mischievous grin, and suddenly felt anxious, fearing she might have blabbed nonsense in front of Grandpa.
Elder Master Lin watched her and laughed, "Yingying, you’ve come back at just the right time. Look at Shanshan, she’s found herself a boyfriend, and you’re still single!"
"Shanshan? Since when did she get a boyfriend?"
Lin Yingying raised her eyebrows curiously and sat down beside Elder Master Lin.
Lin Shanshan grabbed Long Fei’s arm and said, "Long Fei, he’s going to be my boyfriend from now on."
Long Fei turned his head away, not daring to look at Lin Yingying.
Lin Yingying immediately frowned and scolded Lin Shanshan, "What are you messing around for?"
"Who’s messing around? I am serious!"
Lin Shanshan leaned on Long Fei’s shoulder, a look of sweetness on her face.
Lin Yingying took a breath, uncertain of what the girl was up to.
Her feelings for Long Fei were complicated, and seeing Shanshan entwined with Long Fei suddenly ignited a fire within her.
Elder Master Lin, unaware of what was going on with his granddaughters, tried to comfort Lin Yingying, "Yingying, it’s all because Grandpa’s legs haven’t been well these years, otherwise, I would have married you off earlier. Speaking of which, it’s quite a coincidence, Shanshan’s boyfriend is also from Longjiawan Village. The marriage I’ve arranged for you is with someone from Longjiawan Village."
Lin Yingying blushed and said, "Grandpa, I’m not upset about that. Shanshan is just too unreliable; you shouldn’t believe her!"
She stared at Long Fei and asked directly, "Tell me, what exactly is going on between you and Shanshan?"
Long Fei cleared his throat twice, about to come clean.
Lin Shanshan stretched out a little hand and pinched him hard in the back.
He quickly changed his tune, "Oh, it’s like this. We’ve gotten to know each other and felt that the other person wasn’t bad, so we’re just together for now!"
"Nonsense, I don’t agree with you two being together!"
If it weren’t for Grandpa being there, Lin Yingying would have wanted to curse out loud.
Lin Shanshan looked at Grandpa with a coquettish voice, "Grandpa, look at Sister. She’s even interfering with someone’s romance."
Elder Master Lin waved his hand smiling, "Alright, let’s not talk about this for now. Let’s eat first and talk after dinner."
He extended his hand, allowing Lin Yingying to help him up.
The group sat down at the dining room’s rosewood table with Elder Master Lin in the middle, Long Fei and two others on one side, and Lin Yingying all by herself on the other.
Long Fei, acting guilty, didn’t dare to look at Lin Yingying.
Lin Yingying ground her teeth, her mind in turmoil, unsure whether it was Lin Shanshan or Long Fei who was scheming.
Auntie Zhang, with others, began to serve dish after dish at the table.
She asked softly, "Shall I call the young master to come eat?"
Elder Master Lin shook his head, "No need, they’re too noisy with so many people. Just prepare some food for them in the side room."
Auntie Zhang nodded, withdrew, and left the room.
Elder Master Lin, looking at Long Fei, asked curiously, "Young man, Longjiawan Village isn’t big, do you happen to have heard the name Long Santai?"
Long Fei felt a lurch in his heart; how could he not have heard it.
Long Santai was his grandfather’s name.
But at this point, he couldn’t admit it, or the cat would be out of the bag about the marriage arrangement.
He cleared his throat twice and said, "Yeah, I’ve heard of him, he lives not far from my house."
Elder Master Lin nodded and asked him, "How’s his health?"
Long Fei said, "Good, he’s doing well! When he has nothing to do, he takes his fishing boat out to sea all by himself, more spirited than any of us!"
Elder Master Lin laughed heartily, "That’s great to hear, as long as he’s fine. That old fellow is too stubborn. I’ve asked him several times to move to the city, but he refuses. He won’t take money or gifts. I’ll have to go in person one of these days, and you can show me the way then."
Lin Yingying listened with a frown, looking at Grandpa and asked, "Grandpa, with your limited mobility, why do you want to go there?"
