Chapter 162: Chapter 0162: Never Underestimate a Newbie (Part 1)

Last night’s game went on until now, and all the mahjong players were full, shaking dice, Russian roulette, all of which required Ma Kui and his team to be the bookmakers.

This stuff is good for when the game just starts, but now they just take a commission, no more managing these games.

The only thing left to play was poker.

A table of seven or eight people had been playing from last night until now, still as enthusiastic as ever.

After Ma Kui went over, he patted someone on the shoulder and had them make room for Long Fei to sit down.

He warned Long Fei, "Brother Long, don’t blame me for not telling you. Your ten thousand could be gone in two or three hands here; it’s not too late to back out now."

Long Fei chuckled lightly, "Thanks for the concern, but I really do want to gamble a few rounds."

He took out his money and had Ma Kui exchange it for chips.

Here, cash didn’t go on the table; the chips ranged from a minimum of one hundred to a maximum of ten thousand.

Long Fei exchanged half for hundreds and the other half for thousands.

There was a beautiful woman specifically in charge of dealing cards; she switched to a new deck of poker cards every round, making it quite official.

Ma Kui asked Long Fei, "Have you played this before?"

He passed a cigarette to Long Fei.

Long Fei took it and smoked it, responding calmly, "No, I’d appreciate an introduction!"

Ma Kui almost spat blood, never having seen such a blockhead.

Daring to sit here without ever playing.

Pointing to the current round, Ma Kui explained, "See the chips in the middle of the table? That’s called the pot. Before each card reveal, you have to contribute a thousand, this is called ’Open Gate’. After the croupier deals the cards, the person after the last round’s winner starts talking, ’adding ingredients’ to the pot. The minimum is one hundred, capped at a hundred thousand. The following players can either match the hundred or add more ’ingredients’ according to their needs. Then it goes round after round until you yourself feel you can’t keep up, then you can choose to fold. At the end, the last two standing choose to show their cards. After the reveal, whoever has the higher hand takes the money..."

Long Fei nodded as he listened, his eyes fixed on the table.

The money in the middle had already accumulated to over a hundred thousand.

Three players were still following, each trying to squeeze one out.

He curiously asked, "What if all three have good hands and none of them want to give up?"

Ma Kui laughed, "Simple, just keep raising money until one folds."

"What if they run out of money?"

Long Fei furrowed his brow.

Ma Kui replied, "That’s even simpler. I happen to specialize in the loan business. Run out of money? You can always take out a loan with me!"

Long Fei realized that’s how Su Laicai’s usurious loans came about.

Once heads get hot at the gambling table, people dare to bet all they own.

Like this round, no one wanted to fold.

Ran out of money? You could either find someone to bring more or borrow from Ma Kui.

Ma Kui took a 10% service fee with every round, truly making a killing.

When the amount in the pot rose to two hundred thousand, one player folded,

Leaving the two remaining to immediately show their cards,

You could tell that their hands weren’t great.

In the end, one had a straight of 6-7-8, the other a pair of Aces,

The straight won.

The person who had folded earlier cursed in anger, "What kind of nonsense is this? I threw away a flush with 5-6-7!"

He probably ran out of money, lit a cigarette, stood up, and stopped playing.

Ma Kui instructed his underling to go take care of him, the service quality was still pretty good.

A new round began, with everyone throwing in a thousand to ’Open Gate.’

Su Laicai on the side said in a low, tense voice, "Brother Long, you really should think it through!"

"Relax, Brother Su, I’ll win your hundred thousand back in no time," said Long Fei, face calm.

The ones at the table gave him disdainful looks, thinking this newbie was pretty full of himself.

His eyes still fixed on the table, he suddenly asked Ma Kui, "Big Brother Ma Kui, what if someone’s caught cheating?"

Being addressed as ’Big Brother’ made Ma Kui exceptionally pleased.

He slapped his chest and laughed loudly, "Brother Long, you can rest assured on that. We do business by the rules. Anyone who dares to mess around in our place, we dare to break him."

"That’s good to hear."

Long Fei smiled faintly. Others couldn’t cheat, but he could now cheat to his heart’s content.

The croupier finished dealing the cards. Long Fei closed his eyes briefly, and he had felt out every card on the table.

He got lucky with the first hand, coming up with a J, Q, K straight.

The highest anyone else had was a 7, 8, 9.

It was quite the coincidence, that person was the exact one who had won the previous hand.

The others either had pairs or single cards, and right there, four players were out, leaving only four hands.

The one with a pair bet first, tossing in a hundred more chips into the pot.

The following pair called with another hundred, not very bold, just testing the waters.

Long Fei pretended to be very excited, showed his cards to Ma Kui, his face flushing red as he said, "Big Brother Ma Kui, with a hand this big, how much should I raise?"

Ma Kui coughed twice and said, "That’s up to you, raise as much as you want. Let me remind you, it’s against the rules for others to stand around the gambling table. I came over because you’re new, so I wanted to explain the rules to you."

"Understood!"

Long Fei nodded, full of joy, "Then I’ll raise four thousand!"

He took four of the thousand chips he had in front of him and tossed them into the pot.

The bid had gone from a hundred to four thousand all of a sudden.

The person behind him holding the straight stared at him, taken aback. From his reaction, they knew he must have a big hand.

However, since they had a straight too, they couldn’t back down.

They called with four thousand but didn’t raise any more.

Based on experience, after winning the previous hand, one should play it safe this round to keep hold of the money.

The last two players, holding little pairs, weren’t planning on lingering, each choosing to fold.

Long Fei would not have scared them off pretending to be confident if he had not been low on funds.

Out of his ten thousand, five thousand had already been thrown in.

Now it was his turn to speak. He touched his head and feigned regret, "Ah, no more money, I might as well ’Open Gate’ with you!"

He threw in four thousand, ready to face his challenger.

After the cards were flipped, there was a collective gasp from the table.

Long Fei’s hand was indeed not small—JQK.

The other player’s hand was just 789.

If it were anyone else, they probably would have raised the bet before revealing their cards to earn more.

Everyone was sure that this kid was a real novice.

The opponent smiled, got someone to hand him a cigar and took a puff.

This round had been a loss of only five thousand, which felt like mere drizzle to him.

He was actually rather relieved that it was Long Fei who had the cards.

If it had been someone else, his loss would have been catastrophic.

Behind them, Su Laicai wiped the cold sweat from his brow, relieved to start ’Open Gate’ on a winning note, glad not to have lost.

Ma Kui laughed as well, "Brother Long, you’re quite lucky! It’s a pity you don’t know how to play, or you could’ve won even more."

Long Fei replied with a smile, "Winning is all that matters, after all—the gains will accumulate!"

One round, eight players.

The pot had seven thousand, with two players having put in a hundred each, and one following with four thousand.

The bookmakers took a thousand, leaving a net gain of ten thousand and one.

Long Fei thought to himself, no wonder people loved gambling.

This kind of business was simply too straightforward and brutal.

The croupier replaced the deck with a new one and continued to deal.

Playing cards that cost a dollar a pack seem very wasteful to use.
