Chapter 804: Chapter 780:

Ye Chen’s illness was exposed, and the media reporters all had a question: who is the real culprit behind Ye Chen’s injury? Reporters flocked to the Tongzhou City police to find out, but the police kept silent, unwilling to say much. They also stated that an investigation had been launched and hoped the media would give them some time.

Inside the police station, Wu He was relieved of all duties and is now under house arrest with an electronic shackle, unable to go anywhere. He must wait until the matter is concluded. As things developed, Wu He deeply regretted it, but he had to think of ways to make amends for the mistakes he made. Instead of seeking the victim’s forgiveness, Wu He thought of cobbling together over 300,000 in cash and asking his mother to take it to the director to plea for him.

Wu He’s parents brought the 300,000, aware of the trouble their son caused. They were sobbing as well. If the other person died, their son would face a decade, maybe two, in prison. Not only would it ruin his future, but they might also not have anyone to take care of them in old age. So they shakily gathered their savings at home and borrowed some more from relatives before going to plead with the director.

The director took the money but did not dare to guarantee Wu He’s charges would be wiped clean. He could only promise to do his best to reduce or even eliminate Wu He’s penalty. Hearing this, the two elderly parents were so grateful that they nearly dropped to their knees.

Zhang Yantong was taken out of the hospital by Zhang Kaiguo. She turned and jumped into her car, saying, "Dad, I have to investigate Ye Chen’s case thoroughly."

"Alright, go ahead. This matter indeed needs a good investigation!" Zhang Kaiguo nodded, not stopping his daughter in this matter.

Zhang Yantong hurried back to the police station with Fang Qin, but upon arrival, she found all the officers were silent about the case. She wanted to intervene, but none of the departments were willing to cooperate with her. Helpless, she approached the director, hoping he would order the departments to assist her.

"Xiao Zhang, I understand how you feel, but I’m afraid I cannot agree to that!" the director chuckled.

"Why?" Zhang Yantong questioned sharply, "Are you planning to cover for him?"

"No, don’t speak nonsense!" The director immediately shook his head and said, "It’s just that this case is not simple. If Wu He is convicted, the impact could be profound, and some media might distort the facts. As a provincial capital and model city, we must handle such matters properly!"

"So you’re going to halt the investigation for the sake of a so-called title and the stability of your political future?!" Zhang Yantong looked at the director in disbelief. He gave a faint smile and said, "Yes, that’s exactly what I think. It’s also for your dad’s sake, so you should understand me!"

"Bullshit!" Zhang Yantong gritted her teeth and said, "I’m determined to reveal the truth of this case!"

"Do as you wish, I already have a standard explanation ready!" the director chuckled, "I believe Secretary Zhang won’t blame me!"

Zhang Yantong was somewhat enraged and soon found Wu He, demanding he admit that he shot Ye Chen. Surprisingly, Wu He outright denied it, claiming it was the deceased criminals who fired the shot, saying he had nothing to do with it. Zhang Yantong then sought out the special police officers on duty that day. However, those guys had also received orders to remain silent about what happened that day. No matter how much Zhang Yantong persuaded, those special police officers refused to speak.

Thus, Zhang Yantong returned without success, seething with anger.

As the case reached this point, Zhang Yantong suddenly realized that sometimes petitioners really have it tough. Even she, as a police officer, found it hard to uncover the truth, not to mention ordinary citizens. What kinds of hardships and difficulties must they face?

Thinking of this, Zhang Yantong felt sorrow for being born in this country. Sometimes she had the urge to leave, or emulate many other children of officials by emigrating abroad. But she was unwilling to give up.

"Captain Zhang, I have an idea!" Fang Qin hurriedly said.

"Oh? What’s the idea?" asked Zhang Yantong, curious.

"Besides those special police, weren’t there also those three robbers who are witnesses?" Fang Qin whispered in Zhang Yantong’s ear, "If we get those three robbers to testify, Wu He can’t escape justice!"

"Yes!" Fang Qin nodded immediately.

Following this, Fang Qin went to the detention center for a preliminary interrogation of the three robbers. Little Huzi’s injuries had improved a lot, and he was waiting for the prosecution. Facing Zhang Yantong’s request, Little Huzi coldly said, "Why should I testify? I’m already a dead man; why should I play the good guy?"

"I can let you live!" Zhang Yantong immediately said, "If you’re willing to testify in court, then you’ll be making a contribution, and you can avoid the death penalty!"

"What’s the point, getting locked up for decades? I’d rather be dead!" Little Huzi couldn’t care less.

"You..." Zhang Yantong was aggravated by his words and gritted her teeth, "Don’t you want to walk out alive someday?"

"No, I’ve killed so many people; there’s no way I’m getting out alive!" Little Huzi chuckled as he looked at Zhang Yantong.

"Don’t you want to fulfill at least one wish before you die?" Zhang Yantong asked, hoping there might be something to sway him to testify.

"Nope!" Little Huzi shook his head.

"Fine, then die in prison!" Zhang Yantong gritted her teeth and turned to leave. Just as she was reaching the door, Little Huzi called out, "Wait!"

Zhang Yantong’s heart raced, and she turned to Little Huzi, asking, "What do you want to say?"

"I’ll say, if you get some roast chickens, a few bottles of good wine, and some nice cigarettes for us bros, I’ll consider testifying!" Little Huzi glanced at Zhang Yantong.

"Alright!" Zhang Yantong immediately nodded. Hearing Little Huzi’s words, she was naturally overjoyed.

Zhang Yantong immediately rushed out, busy preparing the items Little Huzi requested. Shortly after she left, two policemen hurriedly went to the director’s office from the detention center. They were the director’s informants, essentially monitoring Zhang Yantong’s every move at the police station.

"Director, Captain Zhang just went to the detention center!" the crooked-mouthed officer hastily reported, speaking with a slight whistle.

"Hmm? What was Zhang Yantong doing there?" The director put down his tea cup and took his feet off the desk. He frowned and asked the crooked mouth, "Who did Zhang Yantong meet? Tell me everything!"

"Yes, yes!" the crooked mouth began, while the flat-nosed officer interjected, "Director, Zhang Yantong just met with those robbers caught at the scene!"

"Hm? What did she meet the robbers for?" the director asked urgently.

"We don’t know!" The police quickly shook his head and said, "Captain Zhang didn’t let us in, so we could only linger outside for a bit. However, she seemed quite happy when she came out!"

"Quite happy?!" The director immediately grasped this crucial point.

"Yes, she seemed deep in thought when she went in but was quite happy when she came out!" The crooked guy quickly added.

"Does she have a plan?" The director frowned, stood up suddenly, and shouted, "Oh no, that little girl wants to pin the case on those robbers. Quickly, have those three robbers executed!"

"Huh? Director, are you serious?" The flat-nosed officer looked at the director in amazement and then said, "Those guys are already high-security prisoners. If they die, how are we supposed to explain it to the higher-ups?"

"How can you be so dense?" The director glared at the two, frustrated, "Can’t you stage a prison break scene after you kill them?"

The two exchanged a shocked look but couldn’t disregard the director’s orders and eventually nodded. These guys hurriedly headed toward the detention center, swaggering with a few police officers in tow.

Inside the detention center, Little Huzi and his crew glanced at the crooked mouth and flat nose and immediately sensed something was wrong. Little Huzi gave them a once-over and said, "What is this? Are we on trial now?"

"Hmph, on the director’s orders, we’re letting you go now!" The crooked mouth smirked, that smile sinister like a villainous uncle, perversely akin to a Japanese train groper.

"Really?" The two little brothers beside Little Huzi immediately jumped up with excitement.

"Don’t move!" Little Huzi scolded immediately, "Do you believe their words? If you don’t want to die, stay put here!"

"What? You guys don’t want to leave?" The crooked mouth was stunned.

"We’ve done such a huge crime; surviving would be a miracle. It seems like not just your director calls the shots here, correct?" Little Huzi was clever and knew there was something fishy about it. The crooked mouth frowned and said, "Hmph, kid, no matter what you’ve figured out, today you’re going, whether you want to or not!"
