Chapter 80: The Scent Of Blood (1)
Cassian couldn’t describe what he felt after listening to the information Geoffrey had to give. He felt insecure about something, and when he pushed on, wanting the bald-man to reveal what else he knew about those people, Geoffrey admitted with all honesty that he had no further information to give other than what he had told them.
"The rest is for you to discover yourself, and I wish you all the best in your journey." Was his well-wishes to both of them before they left the inn and journeyed back to the upper East quarters.
Cassian laid on his bed, unable to think of anything aside from the fact he might be visited by one of those vampires that buried him alive, and he knew deep down he would end up running into Elijah once he starts to poke deeper into their business.
Feeling uncomfortable lying on his own bed, he sat upright as his anxiousness grew, creating the discomfort that circulated through his body.
Cassian didn’t want to believe he was starting to get scared of those people, and he didn’t have the right to be scared since he’s the one assigned to bring them down.
It all still felt difficult to accept, and he couldn’t get his mind working straight knowing he would end up being one of those things, and that’s the issue cause he doesn’t want to be like them.
"Should I inform the King about this?" The minute he asked himself, he also got rid of the idea, finding it life-threatening to the others if they knew what was going on.
Geoffrey already mentioned they weren’t safe with the information they had.
In the end, he’s bound to meet them and get the truth.
"Don’t you get bored sitting all by yourself?" Madeline’s voice reached his ears as he sensed her presence before him. From her mere presence, Cassian’s thoughts vanished as his concentration was now set on the woman who had chosen to distract him with her lovely scent and presence.
"What can I do when my wife chooses to leave me behind?" He let out his hand for the woman who took it before she sat beside him on the bed. "Where have you been?"
"Listening to Inna play her cello in the room." Madeline answered with interest. "She’s very talented with those hands when they touch the strings of her cello, and her music gives off a very different kind of emotion that is strange, yet interesting to listen to."
"Inna do be like that." Cassian could relate since he’s listened to his sister play the cello many times, but he had gotten used to it since he saw it as a way for her to express her true emotions.
"Up to your feet, it’s time for dinner and remember you can’t refuse, you promised mother we’ll all have dinners downstairs today so don’t deny."
"Then don’t remind me." He caught the finger she used in pointing at him. "I tend to make false promises when it comes to my mother, and I won’t go if I have no plans on going downstairs, unless....."
The scheming being unhurriedly tried to take her finger into his mouth, and Madeline quickly freed her innocent finger from his grip. She heard him sigh in displeasure as though she had ruined his plans of having to wait before getting a taste of her, and Madeline didn’t really care at this point as she would not let her index finger be a victim to that mouth of his.
"You need to see how the servants are working so hard to make the arrangements perfect." She switched the topic by bringing up the fancy arrangements she took her time admiring downstairs. "I barely got a chance to see Adeline or Frederick as they were mostly occupied with monitoring the servants. It’s a beautiful sight and the walls have been repainted. Pretty sure I saw them paint it last week."
She scratched her head in confusion as she wondered how frequently they had to paint the mansion, and for a mansion so big, it must be a burden to those working here to repeat it every week.
"What do you expect?" Cassian tilted his head at her as he’s forced to remember she wasn’t a woman who lived in the upper East quarters to know how things are done here, and Madeline smiled as she half-shrugged.
"Something simple actually, I haven’t seen anything so grand before, and I was really amazed when Inna referred to the decorations as something miniscule! A lot of things have been changed and she calls it miniscule??!"
The excitement in her voice that changed from shock to bewilderment, then to a complete surprise made Cassian laugh inwardly at her reaction. He shook his head as he continued to hear her speak like a child who was witnessing her surprised birthday celebration for the first time.
"If you enjoy such celebrations, then we should probably throw one everyday." He joked, but to his surprise, he heard her respond in disagreement but still sounded as cheerful as ever
"No no, once in a while makes them more memorable." She smiled before shifting her eyes to the young man, and she said. "I can’t wait for you to see the decorations, then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about."
"You’re seriously trying to pique my curiosity here." Cassian raised a brow as he made her aware of how dangerous it could be if she ends up drawing too much of his attention.
"It is good, you do that to me everytime, so we’re even." She countered back, but before she knew it, Cassian had seized her in his arms with her head resting against his chest, and to both their surprises, she didn’t make a move to distance herself from him.
"Can I ask you a very silly question?" He requested, and Madeline nodded her head. "Which is?"
"What do you think about having a vampire for a husband?"
"Hmmn?" Madeline was taken aback by his question till she repeated it herself. "Vampire husband?"
"It’s a stupid question, but I want your honest answer."
"Vampires aren’t real, are they?" She pulled back to look at him, and he really had no idea how to respond to that.
"I don’t want a vampire for a husband." She responded, nearly crushing his hopes until she added. "But if that vampire is you, then I won’t complain cause you’re kind to me."
"What if I am?"
"I must admit that I had my suspicions when you licked off the blood from my neck." She confessed. "It was a whole new you, and I had my doubts when you locked yourself up, and when you went out to seek Geoffrey, I got confirmed, I was just waiting for you to tell me."
Cassian nearly fell speechless after hearing his wife blurt those words out. "I see, you have joined hands with Inna to be spying on me?"
"I didn’t spy, I just guessed right." She explained. "They bit you not only once, so avoiding the transition is inevitable."
Cassian relaxed after finding out Maddie didn’t have a problem with it, and to think she knew along.... this woman keeps surprising him.
"Are you coming down for dinner, or should I tell mother you’re slouching on her command?"
"Assist your husband, will you?"
"I’m going to start making records of how many things you’ve demanded from me, then you have to start repaying me for each demand you ask of me." She said as she helped him up to his feet by holding both his hands and pulling him up.
As they stepped out of the room and made it downstairs, everyone was already at the dining.
Isabella was busy cutting a knife through her meal when she accidentally injured herself.
"Ouch! Ouch!! Ssssss.." she winced and hissed out when her finger started to bleed, and soft shocking gasps filled the dining room.
"I’ve hurt myself!"
At that moment, the scent of her blood hit Cassian’s nostrils.
