Chapter 251: Congratulations In Advance

"Whitebrige?" Elaine’s brows furrowed into a frown as she looked at Richard who was sitting across his study table. He stroked his chin while his gaze appeared distant, like he was pondering on something, and Elaine moved closer to his desk, her expression filled with worry.

"I don’t care how you do it Richard, but you must bring my daughter, my son and his wife back safely. You have the power to find their location Richard so you must do your duties as their Father. We don’t even know how they’re doing and if they’re alright. I am worried and I will no longer cross my hands to sit and wait for you. I need my children!"

The news of Cassian’s execution not happening as planned had filled her heart with hope. She knew the palace guards were still out searching for him, but it was only recently her husband was able to secretly locate where her children were, and right now, she wanted nothing more but to see them and make sure her precious babies were alright.

"You know that is not possible, Elaine." Richard, who had been stressed over the week finally said something, and he took a deep breath before adding. "If we must act, then I say we leave them there till the situation calms. Going after them will only raise more suspicion, and I’m sure you don’t want that to happen, do you?"

While he spoke, his expression softened.

He needed to make her understand the gravity of the situation Cassian and his wife were in. His son wasn’t human, to his greatest shock, and right now his presence would be more of a threat if he comes back to Carmarthen. Richard didn’t doubt the fact that Cassian was still his son, but he was more curious to know how he became one of those creatures lurking in the dark.

"You are their Mother, Elaine. I understand your concern, but we should think logically about this to avoid putting them in harm’s way."

"While I understand what you mean, I need to know if they’re safe and fine." Elaine pushed on, and Richard finally nodded his head in an attempt to make her calm down.

"I’ll send them a letter, if they respond to the letter, we’ll know everyone is fine, but if they don’t, I’ll go there myself to see what the problem is."

"When will you send the letter?"

"Today." He answered, "I’ll send it today. You know our son better than I do, but from what I’ve observed after encountering him before the whole issue arrived, I’m sure he’s fine, including the rest of them."

A knock on the door ended their conversation, and Frederick stepped in after gaining Richard’s permission.

"Sire." He bowed, "the Ministers from the royal court are here to see you regarding the letter they were meant to receive." Frederick informed Richard who seemed to just remember he would be having guests today.

"Ah.. Yes. Make them feel comfortable while they wait, I’ll be down there shortly."

"Of course." Frederick bowed once more before exiting the room. Elaine glanced at her husband who was rummaging through the cupboard till he brought out a brown envelope, and then he rose from his chair.

"Why are the Ministers here?" Elaine questioned her husband, finding it suspicious. Before Richard could respond, Juliana walked in with a smile, approaching Richard’s desk and ignoring Elaine like she was a peasant unworthy of her attention.

"My dear husband, the Ministers are here to receive the letter. I came to escort you down so we can meet them together." Juliana politely said to her husband, and Juliana’s lightened mood only added to Elaine’s confusion.

"You still haven’t answered me." Elaine looked at Richard with a frown, but Juliana tsked.

"The letter contains--"

"She asked me, Juliana." Richard shut Juliana up, already aware of the trouble she intends to create. "I would appreciate the silence and let me answer her." He strictly warned Juliana who was forced to seal her lips.

Looking at Elaine, he said. "They are here to receive the letter containing the name of who will take my place since I am no longer Duke." He dropped, and Elaine’s eyes widened slightly at the news.

"When did you---?? And why is she the only one who knew about it?" Finding it suspicious, Elaine’s eyes narrowed as it shifted between the two of them, but Richard shook his head.

"I didn’t tell her, I wanted everything to settle first before announcing my decision to the whole family, but Juliana couldn’t keep her hands away from my things." Saying this, he sent Juliana a glare, one that made her clear her throat like she knew she was the culprit, and there was no need for defending since he caught her himself, but she failed to see the name he had written on it.

"Oh, I see." Elaine, who relaxed a bit, returned her gaze to Richard. "This means you’ve chosen who will take your place as Duke?"

"Yes." He answered firmly, "and the name will be revealed to everyone during the ceremonial event which will be held to mark the end of my reign as Duke, and also the welcoming Journey of the new Duke, now if you’ll both excuse me, I have to meet with the Ministers."

Grabbing his coat, Richard stepped out of his study room, leaving Juliana and Elaine behind. When the door closed shut behind him, a smirk returned to Juliana’s lips, and she held back a chuckle, noticing the dispirited look on Elaine’s face.

"I mean, after what happened to your son, there’s absolutely no way MY husband will pick Cassian to be the next Duke. While he messed around till he turned into one of those things, my son, Abbot had accompanied his Father to almost every meeting and is more experienced on how to run being Duke."

"Do not speak like you know my son." Elaine, who regained her composure curtly fired back, "if you do not learn how to speak, Juliana, then I might as well inform my son to make you his next target." And that was all it took to make Juliana’s smile drop.

"Are you threatening me??"

"It’s an advise not many of your kind will listen to, but I am hoping your brains will take it into consideration this time." Elaine took a step closer to her. "Keep the position or whatever it is, I don’t care who Richard picks to take his place as Duke and my son won’t be needing it. You can steal my husband from me, you can steal my title, even my home, but what you can’t take away is the love my children have for me, and that is all I need. My children’s safety and health is all that matters to me now, so all I can say now is congratulations in advance."

With a smile that made Juliana fume on the inside, Elaine stepped out of the study room with her head held high.
