Chapter 249: Moment Of Truth (1)
"A week??" Madeline looked dumbfounded that she hardly believed it. "What... What time is it?" She asked, and Cassian, who still noticed how weak she was, assisted her in laying back down before responding.
"It’s getting close to Midnight." He said, as if he had already been keeping tabs of when she was going to wake up and counting the days that sluggishly passed by. Madeline felt a dull pain in her head, and she finally complied, resting her head back on the soft pillow and closing her eyes for a brief moment.
It felt good to wake up and find herself back home, rather than a dark cave that reminded her of the horrors it entailed.
She presently wished they could return back to Carmarthen and see Mother, she wondered how Oliver was doing too, and the Duke? Frederick, Adeline, she missed all of them so much, and Madeline knew her emotions were in a frenzy state at this point, but she wished she had all of them by her side as well.
"Where is Inna and the rest?" She asked after taking little time to gain some strength in her voice back, and Cassian held her hand in his, resting his chin on their entwined fingers.
"Inna had to get some rest, Elian and Orson are still up." Cassian uttered, and the only reason why Inna was presently asleep was because she also stayed by Madeline’s side throughout the week with him, tending to her when Osvaldo wasn’t around to do it.
"Why?" Madeline’s brows creased into a worried frown. "Why are they up late?"
"Because Abbot is here, however." He revealed it to her, and that made Madeline’s eyes snap wide at the news of Abbot being here. She nearly sat up.
"Abbot? How is he here?" Madeline’s eyes held her disbelief. First it was Jeremy who showed up out of nowhere, now Abbot?? Nothing seems to add up, and her head was aching too much for her to try and wrap up the possibility.
"His case is a complicated one, but it’s not something you should stress about." He assured her before his other free hand found her cheek, caressing it lightly with his thumb. "Let’s worry about you my love, you’ve grown thin in a week, are you hungry? Should I get you something?"
He asked Madeline who seemed to think about it before shaking her head for now. She felt all warmed up when he used a sweet name to coax her into changing the conversation, and if he didn’t want them to talk about it, she was fine with that too.
"I feel sleepy." Madeline said instead and released a weary sigh, "I’ll get some rest first, and then I’ll eat something when I wake up."
"What would you fancy when you wake up?" He kissed her knuckles again. "Just name it, whatever you want, after that you’ll have to follow a daily health routine that will be more helpful to your body, are we good?"
Madeline nodded with a smile, her system relaxing even more now after conversing with Cassian. "You know what, I had a dream about my parents before I woke up." She said to the young lad, looking up at the ceiling as the images from the dream were still vivid in her mind.
"What was it about?"
"It was... it was quite sweet...and painful at the same time." She responded with a sad smile, "the happy moments I locked away, I think I understand why I did so now." Her eyes shifted to Cassian, "every memory of them was a reminder that they knew they wouldn’t live long. They knew they wouldn’t survive, and I guess I was just too afraid to remind myself of the meaning of their words and the weight it held. My Father always wished he could marry me off to someone who would love me for me, if he were alive, I doubt I’d have gotten married to you with your reputation back then."
Madeline chuckled heartily at the thought, and Cassian couldn’t stop himself from joining her, knowing she was right as he remembered how they started out with their marriage as a paper with just their signatures on them. "A man with sense would definitely not marry off their daughter to someone like me of course, except if there’s power attached."
"I think anyone would be lucky to have you as a husband." Madeline praised him, "But I am glad that I didn’t get married to someone who isn’t you. My boring life found meaning again." The tone of her voice softened, "I never went into our marriage with many expectations, but you gave me more than I could ever ask for."
She looked at Cassian with appreciation in her glimmering eyes. "Thank you Cassian."
"Hey, get some sleep." He said softly, "if you keep talking like this I might kiss you and you won’t be able to do a thing about it."
Cassian couldn’t begin to describe how happy he was too, having her in his life was literally one of the best things that has happened to him, and he didn’t want to be consumed by emotions since he had things to do, and he needed to get his head together.
"We’ll talk more when you wake up." He added in a hushed tone.
Turning to his side, Madeline closed her eyes to sleep, resting the side of her face in his palm like it was her comfortable pillow.
"I love you, Cassian."
Cassian leaned forward to drop a kiss on her forehead, and he stayed with her, watching her fall asleep with undenying affection in his eyes, but the room door opening alerted him of Orson’s presence.
The young man was basically struggling to keep both eyes open. Thanks to Cassian, he had been awake, trying to force the stubborn Abbot to open his mouth and speak when he should be getting some beauty sleep.
Yes! Even men need their beauty sleep too!!
"You look more horrible than me." Cassian teased, but Orson wasn’t in the mood to deal with it, he barely noticed Cassian’s uplifted mood.
"You should come down, he’s ready to talk."
