Chapter 214: Streaks Of Darkness
Chapter 214: Streaks Of Darkness
Madeline couldn’t deny how weak she felt by bringing one flower to life. She could swear she felt her zeal in her energy leaving through her arms, almost electrifyingly, and it was surreal that she could hardly believe it. As tired as she was, she felt undeniably excited too.
"I’m going to keep this with me, as a memory of your first success." Monica commented as she walked in front with Osvaldo by her side. She held the healthy rose like it was some kind of treasure that she had picked along the way.
Amused by it, It made Madeline wonder how many years it must have been for the people of Whitebridge to live without seeing any signs of flowers during spring. Currently, Osvaldo and Monica were leading them to a portal they would use to reach the home they had planned for Cassian and Madeline.
Napoleon couldn’t come with them since he had important meetings to deal with. With Madeline’s arrival, a lot of questions will be asked, and it was up to Napoleon to answer it. Presently, they wouldn’t want to overwhelm Madeline and Cassian with the rules of Whitebridge, it was better to let them get settled till they felt better before introducing them to the rest of the elders in Whitebrige city’s capital.
Osvaldo admired his brother when it came to being confident in speaking with a large group, something that he was incapable of doing.
When they made it to the direction of an armored man, Osvaldo spoke in the same strange language he had said to the other guards. When the armored man nodded his head, with a long golden staff in his grip, he thrust it forward, creating a portal that continued to enlarge as he rotated the staff in circles.
"Quick question, where can I get one of those?" Cassian was talking about the staff in the armored man’s grip, finding it useful for future purposes in case he needed to disappear from certain events, and Osvaldo shook his head lightly.
"You do not necessarily need one, all Vampires have speed. Don’t they?"
"Well in some situations, if there was the slightest chance I have the ability to disappear than run, I’d go with the one with less stress."
"I get your point." Monica could very well relate to that statement since there were times she wanted to disappear from Napoleon’s sight whenever he got strict.
Before Cassian could say anything else, Madeline pushed him into the portal. "There we go, he’s disappeared, hasn’t he?"
Monica tittered as she watched Madeline dust her palms. "That was my act of revenge, for all the times he never appreciated my help and I kept quiet."
"Reasons why I have more fear of women than I have of men." Osvaldo couldn’t imagine being tortured by a woman, and he felt the urge to pity Cassian. Shaking the thought away, he went through the portal before Madeline and Monica followed.
Making it to the other side of the palatial building, Cassian, who was sitting at the porch of an elegant building, had his glaring gaze fixed on the woman he had married.
"You tripped." Madeline defended.
"I never asked."
Caught in her own schemes, Madeline cleared her throat and tried to shift the conversation to the house that was in front of them. When she heard of a home, she had assumed it would be like a cozy duplex, but what was in front of her looked like the manor Cassian had bought back in the upper East quarters, except, there was something quite magical about this one.
"This house..."
"It belonged to your Mother." Osvaldo chipped in, "this was where she stayed before things spiraled out of control, so the house was locked and kept for the next Fae that would take over. In conclusion, this house belongs to the both of you."
"Too many good things are happening at once, it doesn’t make sense." Cassian didn’t expect this type of welcoming, they basically walked past his expectations, and Madeline felt exactly the same.
"Don’t be surprised, your Mother held an important position in the city’s capital, but since she isn’t alive to reap her good deeds, might as well pass it down to her children."
Looking around, the house was fenced by a gate, and Madeline could see the residence stroll past the street. Some of them stole glances in her direction before proceeding to whisper to themselves. Madeline felt slightly uneasy, and it was Monica who reassured her this time.
"No one will harm you, this place is presently the safest place to be at until you can understand your powers enough to build that barrier your Mother was unable to."
Her face brightened, "come, let’s go inside."
Monica took them into the house, but Osvaldo couldn’t wait any longer as he had to return to Napoleon’s side. He bowed his head as a way of greeting them goodbye before exiting through the portal, and it vanished from sight.
Monica helped Cassian and Madeline get settled in their new home. While she did so, she told them about Whitebridge traditions, their events, and auspicious times when the whole capital held prayers. She was an entertaining talker, no doubt.
"Hey Monica." Madeline called her name when they had settled the curtains into the right places. "How did you end up in Carmarthen? And in that situation?"
The images of that day wouldn’t stop flashing in her head. The girl looked totally devastated at that point, and there was a strange cloud of darkness that surrounded her.
Not that she found anything wrong with how cheerful Monica had been after seeing her, in fact, she felt incredibly glad to see Monica all smiling and happy again, but still, she couldn’t help but feel that there was more to it than just her cheerful demeanor.
Monica, who had been talking non-stop, was rendered mute by Madeline’s question. Her lashes fluttered lightly, and she felt reluctant to respond as the memories of that day visited her mind.
"I was out looking for you." Monica answered, turning her head to look at Madeline. "When I was told my Aunt had a child in Carmarthen, I wanted to come find you so you can restore peace to the hearts of Carmarthen and the city’s capital, but I ended up in the hands of a Feign instead. That man you saw was possessed by the ghost of a Fiend, and I would have died if you hadn’t read the note I gave you."
She sighed, "I couldn’t blame anyone but myself, Osvaldo warned me to stay put, he said you’d come at your own time, but I didn’t listen. After seeing you earlier today, I don’t completely regret going there now. Now I have the chance to repay the woman who saved me from my near end."
Her smile returned, but Madeline who finally heard her reasons felt guilty. She got into that trouble all because she wanted to find her? Madeline felt touched and mad at herself for thinking they abandoned her.
"Thank you for trying to find me." Madeline uttered with gratitude, and Monica looked at her briefly before smiling. "It’s.... It’s what families do."
"Is it just you? Or are there more?"
"There are more." Monica answered, "but Napoleon is keeping them away for the time being, till you’re settled enough to meet them."
Madeline nodded in response before continuing with the curtains and moving to the next. She remained oblivious to Monica’s troubled expression, and the girl suddenly stopped what she was doing.
"I’ll be back later tonight, I just remembered that I have something important to do."
"Oh, okay, thanks for your help." Madeline didn’t suspect anything, and Monica offered a slight bow before taking her leave.
When she made it to the doorstep, she could feel the pain in her arm starting to stretch. Pulling her sleeve up, the black streaks of veins that appeared on her pale arm were indeed spreading, and she immediately covered up her arm.
Her face blanched, and her eyes were filled with silent panic as she looked around and dashed off quickly.
