Chapter 178: Exchange Of Words In The Kitchen
Back inside the quiet home of Cassian, Inna gently dropped a tray at the side table and sat on a chair close to Catherine’s bed.
She handed the lady her medicine, and then a glass of water she could use to easily step down the drugs into her system. All the while she attended to Catherine, there was not a tiny creak of smile that broke on her lips, her expression was unfathomable, giving Catherine the chills as she said nothing and quietly took her medicine.
Everyone had read the news concerning Cassian, including the rumors, and the tension in the house increased. No one’s had breakfast and Orson already stepped out a few minutes before Inna entered her room. After taking her medicine, Catherine cleared her throat and tried to start up a conversation with Inna, something to weigh down the restlessness in the environment.
"I’m... I’m grateful for how you’ve been taking care of me." Said Catherine, but Inna’s reaction barely faltered as she got to her feet and picked up the tray she had brought with her. Her impassive gaze shifted to Catherine, and a slight scoff left her lips.
"Firstly, don’t misinterpret my kindness, you don’t need to talk to me like we’re friends." Asserted Inna, "secondly, I’m only doing this because Orson approached me. If you have anyone to thank for this, it’s Orson, cause I wouldn’t look in your direction if it wasn’t for him."
"Inna." Catherine tried to apologize, but the young lady had already turned and stepped out of her room, clearly pissed. Catherine had her own nervousness to deal with, if Inna can’t forgive her, then where is the possibility that Cassian will??
Reaching the kitchen, Inna dropped the tray on the counter. She closed her eyes for a moment and tried to get rid of the annoyance that was building inside of her. This wasn’t the right time to start picking on anyone, and Inna could only hope Madeline and Cassian were alright.
After seeing what was written down in the newspaper, It was normal for her to get anxious for her brother, and she couldn’t stop herself from pondering on whether Madeline was able to see Cassian.
"Here." She suddenly heard a familiar male voice speak to her, and when she opened her eyes, she met the blank stare of Elian who was handing her a handkerchief.
"Thought you might need it."
Her eyes shifted to the white handkerchief in his grasp, and then back to his eyes, but she made no attempt to receive the handkerchief from him. Instead, she looked away, deliberately ignoring him and placing the tray back where it belonged.
Elian sighed at his failed plan to start a conversation with her. He looked at his rejected handkerchief and leaned against the counter, watching the iron lady give him zero of her attention, like his existence meant nothing.
"Inna." He called her name, but she pretended to not have heard as she continued with whatever she was doing, and when she made an attempt to leave the kitchen, Elian could no longer stand it and grabbed her arm, startling Inna who could feel her back pressed against the counter this time, and she looked into his eyes that narrowed sternly.
"For how long do you intend to ignore me?" He asked, his grip on both her arms firm, barely painful, but solid enough to make Inna realize there was no escaping him.
"Let go of me." She warned.
"At least you’re talking to me."
"What is your problem?" Inna frowned deeply, "I’m not in a good mood, and it’s best if you keep your distance before I say something even more hurtful to you."
"I get it, you don’t trust me, I never told anyone about my relationship with Elijah and that is partly my fault, I completely understand, but what I won’t tolerate is this silent treatment you keep giving me cause I don’t deserve it."
"Elian, let go." She tried to free herself from his grip, and Elian couldn’t imagine anyone more stubborn than Cas’s sister.
"Will you hear me out first?" He asked, his hold on her remained firm, making her aware of the fact that he wasn’t going to leave her alone until she gave him her listening ear, and Inna stopped struggling, a sigh escaping her lips at how pointless this conversation might end in.
"You said it yourself, I don’t trust you, and I don’t think I can ever will." Inna made that phrase clear to him. "You read the newspaper today? Guess what? My brother is presently being accused for the abduction of those missing people, and now, I can’t tell what’s going to happen, or what His Majesty’s orders might be regarding these fake rumors, and who can I blame for this?"
"Do you really think I would involve myself in this? If I wanted to get rid of your brother, I would have done it the first day we met at the balcony and no one would know." He finally released her, a bit alarmed upon hearing his sad emotions escape through his words, and as if doused with cold water, he took a step back, hoping Inna didn’t grab his accidental emotions.
Letting out a breath, he remained quiet for a second before continuing in the same manner of voice that made it difficult for one to guess his feelings, "Elijah and I, we stopped being brother’s for years now. We had our differences concerning what we had become, whom we choose to follow, and since our disagreements kept heightening, we decided to part ways, but if we ever ran into each other, we made a promise to end one another, cause the two of us have to make sure the other is dead."
Inna’s eyes widened slightly, but she said nothing after hearing him reveal a part of his past to her. She lowered her gaze frantically, her mindset muddled, but when she met his eyes, she noticed a flicker of unsaid emotions, and as always, it disappeared the minute he blinked.
"We might look alike, a little too identical, but we’re different people. I have no idea what’s making you doubt my intention, but if you really want to know why I’m still here, then I’ll tell you. My first goal is getting rid of Elijah, for good. And my second goal, finding the monster who turned me into this thing that I am today."
Saying this, he shoved his hands into his trouser pocket, "I can’t accomplish it alone, that’s why I seeked Cassian, and until then, I’ll try my best to keep my business out of your hair. I never liked people who hate me."
There was more he needed to say to her, but since he found it insignificant, he kept it to himself and walked away, exiting the kitchen.
Inna watched him leave till he was out of sight. For some reason, her eyes felt teary, her already weighed heart weighed tons now, and he was finally giving her the space she wanted.
But why isn’t she still happy?
