Chapter 162: Meeting At The Palace (1)

The sun was setting behind the massive grand palace as Cassian, Orson, and Elian made their way towards the entrance of the beautified grandeur, elegantly dressed in their finest noble attires as they stood in front of the main door, feeling a sense of anticipation as they knew what awaited them on the inside.

Each of them had carefully selected their finest masks to wear for the occasion, ones that would partially hide their ethereal faces and add an air of mystery to their entrance. Cassian had chosen a sleek black mask with gold trim, while Orson had gone with a more intricate design that featured delicate lacework and shimmering jewels.

Elian had opted for a simple, yet elegant silver mask that complemented his piercing leaf-green eyes.

The palace was illuminated by hundreds of candles, casting a warm glow on the stone walls and marble pillars. The sound of orchestral music filled the air, mingling with the chatter of special guests arriving for the charity ball as they made their way past the trios.

"I’m not doing this anymore, I changed my mind." The frightened Orson already turned to take his leave when Elian effortlessly grabbed him by his collar, bringing him back.

"Relax, you won’t even see them."

"How’s that supposed to make me feel better??? What if I get possessed?!!" Orson could feel his body shudder at the thought of having to become one of those ugly-looking creatures, he could feel his stomach churn just by thinking about it, and Elian’s cold gaze certainly wasn’t doing anything to calm him down.

"If you do get possessed and become a vessel, that gives me enough reason to kill you without much hesitation, and I’ll make sure you’re dead, so stay with us, and do the best you can to avoid it." He whispered in an impish threatening tone before releasing Orson’s collar.

"Ah...you..!" Before Orson could utter a word of complaint, Elian rudely looked away as he stood beside Cassian with his hands tucked in his trouser pocket, deliberately ignoring Orson who found it even more offensive.

"Animal." He cursed underneath his breath before adjusting his collar.

"Did we make you three wait for too long?" Madeline and Inna approached the three gentlemen who were waiting for them at the entrance, and Cassian wasted no time hooking his wife’s arm around his, making a sudden blush creep onto her cheek since she wasn’t expecting him to get clingy.

"Ahh... I feel so insecure, even with a mask my wife’s beauty is still unmatched. It’s better we stay like this, I need to keep some perching eyes away from you." He looked into her dark orbs with a seductive stare, and Madeline nearly cursed him for being a Seductive Cacodemon.

’Thank goodness they featured this evening event with a mask.’ Madeline felt relieved that her bashfulness was kept hidden.

"Oh no, I refuse to be an exception, I need a date too." Orson instinctively held Inna’s hand, wanting to hook her arm around his to make her his date for tonight’s event, but to both his and Inna’s surprise, Elian pushed him off with his expression still indifferent, and to Inna’s unexpected amazement, he hooked her arm against his instead, pulling her close.

"What are you doing?"

"Don’t flatter yourself, I’m only doing my job." He immediately wiped off whatever Inna must be thinking, his serene green eyes boring into hers in a way she felt uncomfortable with, and she pouted at his aloof nature, but not making any move to retreat her hand from his.

She had to admit that he looked sophisticated tonight, more less dangerous than when she first spotted him, but then why did he choose to come with them?

"He is really getting on my nerves." Orson was holding onto the little restraint that stopped him from taking off his shoe and hurling it at the vampire, but as much as he wanted revenge, he couldn’t deny the fact he was still scared.

"Don’t try anything funny, both of you." Cassian strictly warned them both, already starting to think over if it was the best decision to leave these two miscreants with his little sister when he eventually leaves.

"Let’s just go, we’re late as it is." Madeline’s calm voice made everyone recollect themselves, but Orson still promised to get his little revenge on the vampire.

As they approached the entrance, a team of liveried footmen opened the heavy wooden doors, revealing a grand staircase that led to the ballroom. Madeline couldn’t help but feel a little awestruck at the sight before her.

The ballroom was decked out in opulent decorations: white drapery adorned with golden fleur-de-lis, crystal chandeliers suspended overhead, and gilded mirrors lining the walls.

"I feel a little nervous." Madeline admitted to Cassian as they went up the stairs, and he already sensed it due to how tight her hold on his arm became.

"Just stay by my side, you have nothing to worry about if you do this." He whispered back in an assuring tone, and Madeline smiled faintly before thinking over his suggestion.

"But I suppose I need to socialize with the guests present, you must be familiar with a lot of people here." Madeline bowed her head in greetings to a couple that passed them by before continuing, "if I stay by your side, what will that make me? Between the two of us, I might get mistaken for the type of woman who can’t leave her husband’s side, and with a lot of mishaps happening after my arrival, my background will also...."

"Your background has nothing to do with you being my wife." He corrected in a whisper, his tone light but the firmness still intact. "If someone harrasses you, then I need you to tell me, there are many ways to make a buzzing fly keep quiet."

Madeline’s eyes widened, "do you intend to kill?"

"That is one of them, but no." He enjoyed how much he made her panic for a second. "We cut off their wings." He made a scissor-cutting motion with his free hand.

"We’re in the palace, the people you meet here are no ordinary people, their bloodline relates with something that grows within every influential person you see here, and that is the sweet smile masking their supercilious nature, so don’t speak if it isn’t necessary, and avoid them if you get any bad energy."

Madeline nodded her head obediently, feeling more eased since she knew there was someone here she could easily rely on.

Reaching the landing, Cassian led the way into the ballroom, but at the same time his eyes did a quick scan amongst the guests’ presence, and fortunately, no Fiend has been detected. Madeline, on the other hand, noticed the many attendees that were present in the ballroom.

They all wore their finest attires, sporting delicate lace and intricate embroidery, befitting of the grandeur of the occasion.

Elian’s gaze also raked through the palace building, his eyes taking notice of the polished marble floors that shone beneath their feet.

The walls were draped in luxurious fabrics of red and gold. It was as if they had stepped into another world, one where opulence and extravagance reigned supreme. A string quartet began playing a live tune, adding to the moment, and Inna was tempted to have her Cello by her side so she could play with them.

"Isn’t this..." Inna’s excited tone mellowed down upon noticing the expression on Elian’s face. His unreadable gaze continued to scrutinize the vicinity of the palace, barely paying attention to the young lady by his side.

"Is everything okay?" Her soft tone jolted Elian back to the presence, and he looked at her, meeting her questioning brown eyes, and a faint smirk curved the corner of his lips.

"Why? Are you worried?"

"I have my own worries that’s still in the middle of being settled, I’m not kind enough to carry someone else’s worry, but you were staring like you’ve been into the palace before."

He chuckled at her statement before sighing, "no, that’s not it."

"Cassian?" Alaric’s voice made the young lad stop in his tracks. He turned to look at Alaric who approached him with a satisfied grin upon seeing him here.

"Your Majesty." Cassian politely offered his greetings, and not too long, a young woman dressed in Royal embodiments joined them, and upon seeing Cassian offering his respect with a slight bow, the rest joined him.

"Greetings." Cassian politely offered his greetings, and the young woman, who was Alaric’s wife, smiled warmly, appreciating their presence.

"Even with the masks, it was difficult to not recognize you. Happy to see you honor our invitation with your presence, father will be most delighted to see you, he’s been asking of you ever since we told him you’d be here."

"Hey." Alaric pointed at Orson who was deliberately hiding behind everyone, but unfortunately, he had been caught by his Majesty.

"You..!" Alaric held back his scolding, knowing he couldn’t act out of orderliness in front of the guests present, so he could only send glares at Orson who was well aware of his crime.

"I’ll report you to father, you declined my invitation to the Luncheon meeting, let me see your face, should I call a guard?"
