Chapter 160: Silent Call For Help (2)
"Here."
Madeline handed the girl a cup of water after they made it to a safer place where marketers’ shops occupied the corners of the street, making it more secure for the three ladies to be in since there were passersby to keep the lane occupied.
The girl, whose body was still half-traumatized as she sat on a bench, glanced at Madeline briefly before looking at the cup of water handed to her. With a look of gratitude, she received the cup of water Madeline had brought, and wasted no time emptying the cup, enough to prove she had been thirsty for a long time.
Inna and Madeline exchanged glances, and Inna’s severe gaze conveyed a question of ’what are we supposed to do with her?’ one thing was clear and Inna had no wish of staying by the girl’s side for too long.
What if that strange man comes for them and not her? Involving themselves in this would only bring more harm their way.
Not sure of what decision to make, Madeline looked at the girl and simply asked. "Who was that man? And why was he after you?"
Madeline’s tone remained calm, she wouldn’t risk triggering the girl’s fear since her body was yet to calm from what she just experienced. And Madeline made sure her question didn’t feel forced in any way, making it easier for the girl to decide if she wants to tell her or not.
"I...I don’t know." The girl answered in a confused tone, keeping her gaze low as her trembling fingers clutch to the cup in her hands in order to control her distress state. "He’s been following me all night till this morning, and I just want to go home."
She sniffled, holding back her sobs as her eyes became watery again.
"It’s fine, uhmm...... What is your name? Where do you live?" Madeline’s tone turned softer, and the girl suddenly clasped her hand together in front of Madeline, stunning the young woman as she watched the tears rolling down the eyes that silently pleaded to her.
"My name’s Monica." She said, "I’m in need of your help. I know you just saved me and I have no rights to take advantage of the kindness you have shown me, but if you can assist me just this once? Please?"
"Like you said, we already saved you from that man, what do you want us to do?" Asked Inna, who was clearly not ready to risk her life for someone she barely knew, and the girl named Monica, returned her gaze to the concerned Madeline who was more than ready to hear her out.
"What do you need help with?" Madeline prompted, making the girl aware that she would help if it was within her capabilities, and despite her hesitancy to speak up, the frightened girl finally took the step to state her request.
"If you can...if you can please... assist me with some money, I...I don’t have any money on me, and I need to get home. My grandfather, he must be waiting for me, and he must be worried.... please...a little financial assistance is all I ask for." She begged, not minding if her call for help was gaining the attention of passersby.
"It’s okay, how much do you need?" Madeline asked, covering the girl’s clasped palm with her own, and she instantly noticed the little rays of hope that shone in the strange girl’s silver gray eyes.
"You want to go back to your grandfather, how much do you need to transport yourself back to him?"
Touched by Madeline’s generosity, the girl named Monica found no words to express her gratitude, so she focused on answering the question instead. "Anything you can offer, anything you can offer to a wretched soul like me."
"Don’t say that, okay hold on." Madeline opened the small bag she had taken with her, and inside the bag contained a small sack of silver coins. Taking out a few coins she could use to transport her and Inna back to Calchester street, Madeline handed the rest of the coins in the sack to the girl who’s eyes widened.
"Here, you must be journeying far, use it to aid yourself and get some food to eat."
"For....for me?" The girl was hesitant to take it, but Madeline flashed a harmless smile, giving the girl a nod of approval to take the little sack from her grip.
"I hope it’s enough."
"Thank you!!" Rising to her feet, the girl bowed her head several times, as though she could only make gestures that still couldn’t reach the amount of thanks she wanted to give Madeline.
"Thank you so much! I will never forget your kindness and what you have done for me." Madeline noticed a crack of smile dawning on the girl’s trembling lips, a smile that brightened her Ray of hope when she looked at the little sack in her hand, and after giving one more bow to show her appreciation, she left where she was sitting and headed down the lively path that led to where another Transport carriage would be waiting.
"Ahh! Ssss....."
All of a sudden, a searing pain jogged through Monica’s left arm, making her wince at the unexpected throbbing ache, and she stopped running when the pain in her arm was beginning to grow so intense that it weakened the rest of her system.
Raising the sleeve of her dress to take a look at her left arm, a panicked look dawned on her tired face, noticing the black veins that were beginning to show in her left arm, and she quickly covered it before anyone else noticed, cautiously darting her gaze from side to side.
Quickly wiping her tears, Monica endured the pain and continued to run.
"I hope she gets home safe." Uttered Madeline as she watched the girl’s figure fade into the distance. She looked at the few coins she had in her hands, hoping it would be enough to transport her and Inna back.
"She looks more insane than sane to me." Commented Inna when she felt something wasn’t technically right about that girl, and Madeline smiled it off, taking it as Inna being a little too wary of someone harmless.
"Let us return now, Cas must be waiting."
"And worried." Inna completed as she turned to leave, and Madeline was already aware of the explanation she was going to give to a certain someone in relation to why she took so long.
She followed Inna behind, hoping the weird stranger won’t go after the poor girl again.

"Are you sure about leaving?" Isabella asked as she helped her husband put on his coat, and Abbot rolled his eyes as if it would be a waste of his saliva if he bothered to give a response.
"My location will only be a secret between us." He strictly reminded her. "If anyone asks, I traveled for something urgent, no need to give them details." He adjusted the collar of his shirt in front of the dressing mirror before turning to look at Isabella with an unreadable expression.
"Well when are you leaving?"
"I’ll be leaving in two days." He casually responded, checking his profile in the mirror and making sure he looked good-looking enough to step out. "One of us has to do something since, for some reason, you can’t get pregnant for me."
"Don’t ruin my mood by bringing up that topic again." Isabella’s frown deepened, already getting irritated by how he constantly blames her for being unable to bear him a child.
"I’m not wrong." Abbot’s brow arched, "very soon, Cas’s wife will get pregnant before you, and then think of what the outside people will say.... Oh! The youngest wife of the Albrecht’s family conceived before the eldest." He chuckled as though he said a joke, but to Isabella, those statements crushed her every right to be called a woman.
"Are you indirectly calling me barren?"
Abbot turned away from the mirror to face his distraught wife, and he sighed. "See, I have to be somewhere important, I didn’t gather my strength to have an argument with you, so if you’ll excuse me."
Without bothering to say the rest, he walked out his room, leaving Isabella to ponder on how he indirectly insulted her.
