Chapter 156: Silent Feud (1)

"You swine!"

Inna had her fist raised, ready to hit the vampire when the main door suddenly opened, ruining her chances to get revenge, and it took a lot of great effort for her hands to drop at her side, allowing those fatuous words of his to slide. She wouldn’t wish to prove to him that his words affected her in some way, or how much it stirred her blood on the inside.

There was just something unusually odd about him, and it reeked with bad news. Inna wouldn’t want to consider being friends with someone who possessed such enmity within him even if he never said a word about it, but it certainly won’t stop her from discovering why she finds him mysteriously odd, and understanding Vampires a lot better was something her secret letter friend would help her understand better.

"Was Orson here?" Asked Cassian when he stepped into the living room with Madeline, and Inna nodded her head in response, her arms folded.

"Yes, he left not too long ago to deliver the news of Catherine’s health to his parents. Don’t worry, he didn’t tell them she’s here, but he assured them she was in a safe place getting treated. The physician came this afternoon, so far Cath’s out of danger, but I can’t say what’s taking her so long to regain consciousness."

"That is not a terrible option, she should remain unconscious till I’m ready to face her without pulling out my guns and ending her myself." Came Cassian’s blunt retort as he hung his jacket against a stand in the living room before going up the stairs, unbuttoning the two top buttons on his shirt.

Madeline watched him disappear from the stairs before looking at Inna and Elian who instinctively met her gaze. She let out a deep breath before speaking softly to the two of them.

"You two should get some rest, It’s been a long day for everyone."

Inna, who didn’t have enough strength to argue anymore, nodded with a forced smile before turning and going down the walk path in the hallway. It left Madeline and Elian standing in the living room, absorbing the quietness until they finally locked gazes.

"Aren’t you tired?" She asked, but Elian casually stuck his hands in his trouser pocket, shaking his head slightly.

"I can’t be tired, too many things are at risk if I choose to get tired."

Madeline knew those words meant something that didn’t relate to what she had asked, and she didn’t want to meddle into his privacy. Just staring at him reminded her of Elijah, the same fellow vampire with a hoodie, but she couldn’t tell why they both carried the same ominous aura around them.

"I was told you’re a vampire." Madeline began coolly. Since the first time she ran into him, they haven’t crossed paths until today, and since they were alone, Madeline wanted to use this chance to satisfy a bit of her curiosity concerning him personally.

"Were you also abducted?" She asked, taking note of Elian’s expression, and there was a gloomy thread that settled on his face, but it vanished the minute it came, and the next minute, he sneered at the young woman, turning his body to look at her.

"What makes you think I didn’t agree to be one of them by choice?" He tilted his head at her. "Not everyone can be forced into doing things."

"That means you agreed to be one on your own merits?" It was an answer, but it sounded more like a question as if she was trying to imply how true her words were, but Elian laughed faintly, showing no signs of responding before looking away.

"Doesn’t matter which one it is, or how it all started, what matters is how you plan to end it." He met her puzzled stare.

"Pardon?"

"You’ve seen what’s out there yourself, I don’t need to explain in detail, but what you’ve seen will only get worse since the one who can end it has reawakened her powers. It’s like that feeling when the depths of hell are being opened, and all the creatures sprang out to overtake the human race, destruction happening around every corner, but for how long until the one destined to end it figures out her true purpose for being born?"

"Why do you speak in riddles?" Madeline was able to grasp half the meaning of his statement, but the rest was still very much unclear to her as she couldn’t pinpoint the sort of awakening he kept talking about.

Hoping he would break his statement for her so she could understand properly, to Madeline’s surprise, he just turned and went up the stairs.

"Goodnight."

"Wait, but I’m not...." Madeline didn’t bother to complete it since he was out of her sight as well.

Also going up the stairs and walking through the empty dim-lit corridor, Madeline stopped at the entrance of her room door.

Her hand grasped the handle, ready to open it, but before she could commence with that little action, a vague appearance of someone caught the corner of her eyes instantly, making her pause as her eyes snapped wide.

Alarmed by the familiar portentous presence, Madeline whipped her head to the right to see what was standing there, but just like it came, it had vanished because there was absolutely nothing there.

"What?" Her eyes narrowed observingly as she continuously stared at the long way of the corridor that got dimmer and dimmer since the candle lights were at the point of going off.

Was Elian’s unclear statement starting to make her see things?

Before she could consider checking, the door to her room suddenly opened, and she gasped softly since she didn’t expect it, but after sighting Cassian standing in front of her, her racing heart instantly eased.

"Won’t you come inside?"

"How did you know I was standing here?" She asked, and he leaned his shoulder against the side of the door.

"Your scent got stronger, I couldn’t resist, and I knew you were closeby." His Amber-brown eyes portrayed a look of warmness that made her feel safe knowing he was here with her, and she instantly discarded what she had seen from her mind as she quietly stepped into the room.

"How was the Luncheon meeting?" She asked, wanting to hear all about it, but was more surprised when Cassian pulled her into his arms for a hug she did not expect, and it sent her already calming heart to naturally pick up speed.

"It was tiring." His voice sounded heavy as his hold on her tightened a bit, pressing her small frame against his built ones, and Madeline prayed he wouldn’t crush her in his arms if he intends to keep squeezing her against him.

"Cas?"

"Let’s stay like this for a few minutes." His heavy hypnotic voice made Madeline comply to his request, not just for his sake, but for hers as well since she had missed him all the time he was out.

After a few unknown minutes of just holding each other, Cassian finally pulled back to look into her glimmering shiny dark orbs.

"Is there a problem?" She asked, meeting his somnolent eyes.

He held her hand and led her to the bed, he made her sit before proceeding to lay down, resting his head against the comfort of her warm soft thighs.

"I have a question to ask." He looked up to meet Madeline’s gaze as she waited for him to ask.

"Have you ever wondered if both your parents were indigenes of Carmarthen?" He asked, and Madeline’s expression gradually eased since she was expecting a tough question.

"Why do you ask?" It was a simple question, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t get curious as to why he’s asking about her parents’ lineage.

"I’m just..." he sighed, trying to fight off the sleep. "I want to know more about them."

"Hmmmn." Madeline thought about it before smiling heartily, "well, since you asked, both my parents were subjects of Carmarthen." She told him. "My mother became the Baroness of Carmarthen after my father married her, and if I’m not mistaken, that’s when the silent feud between my late father and Uncle Roland started."
