The Baroness Misbehaves
Chapter 150: Something Unusual (1)

Chapter 150: Something Unusual (1)

The next day, Cassian showed up at the less crowded fancy building of a quorum. Specifically, the building served as a military base where every high member of the council met, including the Duke himself, and crazily enough, the building was situated close to the border between Carmarthen and another strange town known as the Whitebrige city’s capital.

With his Majesty making the decision to take part in today’s luncheon meeting, Cassian could guess the reason for this impromptu meeting had to be crucial.

Stepping into the building, the young lad was dressed in a noble attire that commanded respect as the officers at the main door bowed their heads in greeting.

Already familiar with his peerless presence and appearance, they opened the door, granting him entrance into the building that led to an opened courtyard with a fountain in the middle, and Cassian unhurriedly stepped in.

His tailored charcoal gray suit hugged his tall, imposing frame, complementing his sharp features and rugged, confident demeanor.

The pristine white shirt beneath his suit was collarless, and it had a crisply pressed front that shone elegantly in the light. The fitted waistcoat he wore, in a burgundy hue, added a regal touch to his ensemble, with its silver button glinting in the luminous light as the sunlight tended to focus more on him as he made his way through the courtyard.

His waistcoat was paired with perfectly fitting trousers that tapered into sharp, polished shoes that shone with a deep black color. His tawny-dark-hair cascaded down to the length of his neck in tumbling waves, framing his ruggedly handsome features and accentuating his Amber-brown eyes that looked honey-colored.

The way the light caught the highlight in his hair made it seem as though they were flecks of gold and copper woven in his hair, adding to his lustrous shine.

As he walked into the spacious hallway that was right after the splendid courtyard, the assembled guests who were murmuring to oneself immediately hushed down after taking notice of his presence. The look of surprise on their faces didn’t bother Cassian in the slightest, today, he had chosen to attend the luncheon meeting without his mask, and he wished he could capture all their expressions and remind them of how foolish they looked presently.

Commonly, the noble councils and everyone else present were all stylishly dressed as they carried within them the air of arrogance and wealth, the type of atmosphere that never appealed to Cassian, but unfortunately, he has to blend in and tame his insensitivity.

After the mayhem he caused during the last luncheon meeting two years ago, he found it pretty surprising that they would invite him once again. Most of everyone here had been a victim to his irrational behavior in the past, and for some reason he felt he needed to stay on guard in case they were plotting a trap against him.

Currently, his only enemies aren’t just ghosts and vampires, humans tend to come as a bigger threat.

Taking a glass of drink from one of the servers who passed him by with a tray in hand, the young lad caught a glimpse of Mr Maverick at the other end of the hallway, he raised his glass of burgundy wine, clinking it with that of a guest as they exchanged pleasantries, and Cassian sighed as each and everyone of them in the hallway indulged in small talks.

Continuing down the red carpeted hallway in search of where his Majesty might be, Cassian felt the need to avoid all these people who kept looking for silly excuses to chat with him.

"Lord Cassian, how pleased I am to have this conversation with you today." A tubby-looking man with brown curly hair approached him with a small grin as he raised his glass up for a toast.

"Oh?" Was all Cassian said in response as he clinked their glasses together. His unimpressed reaction to the weird man’s presence was one he felt wasn’t worth hiding it from.

"You are well behaved for today’s luncheon" The man continued after observing Cassian’s composed attitude. "Has the loss of your brother affected your still heart? Or have you sanctioned yourself with the act of repentance?"

"In order to be affected, I must first be genuinely concerned about that person, if you know what I mean." He replied, sounding bored. "Tell me, do you have anything important to say to me or are you here to use me for your own entertainment?"

"Entertainment?" The man paused briefly as if he didn’t understand what the young lad was trying to imply before laughing out amusingly. "I am just here to offer my compliments, you don’t always have to set your guards straight to the top, Lord Cassian, most times it’s better to just lay low and show some courtesy towards everyone."

Cassian’s Amber-brown eyes met the eyes of the tubby man who was still smiling, but then if the mouth can shamelessly deceive, the eyes certainly don’t.

"Do you know what I see when I look at this table?" Cassian walked his fingers to the top of a table that was placed at the side of the hallway. "When I look at it, three things come to mind; a broken table, broken bones, and finally, a broken you." His vicious gaze drifted to the man who was gradually starting to recognize danger as the smile on his lips faded, and then he coughed out a laugh in a desperate attempt to hide his fear.

"I can see you need some time to yourself, the luncheon will begin shortly." He calmly respected the little warning, and Cassian eyed him once more before continuing on his pace down the hallway.

"Lord Cassian." Maverick, who finally caught sight of the young lad approached him with a smile as they shook hands, and he pulled the young lad close while leading him to a door that was at front.

"His Majesty and your father are waiting there for you." Uttered Maverick as he gave the young lad a pat at the back of his shoulder before releasing him.

"Remember, stay on guard, and don’t let anyone intimidate you."

Cassian only nodded before bowing his head at Maverick and going to the door that was guarded by three hefty palace guards. The door was opened for him to make his entrance, and Cassian stepped into the brightly-lit room and heard the door close shut behind him.

A rectangular wide table was placed in the middle of the room, and Cassian could spot his father who was sitting quietly at the right side of the table, going through a file, and then a young aristocratic figure draped in Royal embodiments was sitting on the head table, his imposing presence exuding authority.

"Cassian." The aristocratic figure looked up to meet the low gaze of Cassian who respectfully bowed his head, the young man’s face showing a look of indifference.

"Come with me." Rising to his feet, he led Cassian to an empty adjoining room while the young lad wordlessly followed. When they were out of sight to everyone else in the main room, the young man who appeared to be in his early Thirties looked at Cassian with a strict demeanor.

"You’re late."

"Forgive me, I received a late invitation." Cassian apologized, his tone straight and firm.

"Excuses, you dare come late at your majesty’s order."

"If his Majesty wishes, he can punish this lowlife for his disobedience."

"Sigh...you worthful scoundrel!" His demeanor softened, and a graceful smile curved his lips, as well as that of Cassian as they shook hands.

"Your majesty."

"Good to see you again, Cas. It’s a good thing you didn’t ignore my invitation. I wanted to discuss something crucial with everyone." The young King by the name Alaric quietly informed him, and Cassian’s brow inquisitively arched.

"I suspected, any problem?"

"It concerns the missing people case, and we’ve found one of them, but something’s wrong, come, I’ll explain it to everyone after I show you."
