Chapter 143: Be Brought to Book
~~~
"I’m sorry, I swear I don’t know what came over me, I really am." Catherine cried in guilt before her brother who worriedly paced back and forth in the empty dining, looking speechless and unsure of how to react after listening to all the rubbish his sister just spat out from her mouth, and so he vented his rage on the table as he slammed his fist on it, startling the crying lady who heaved in shock.
Silence reigned after that as though the earth had settled after an avalanche had broken, and seconds later, Orson could hear his sister’s light sobs.
He looked at his sister with his anger still visible in his eyes, they were slightly red and teary, and Catherine lowered her head despondently, feeling shattered within after noticing the clear disappointment that displayed in her brother’s eyes for her.
"How could you do this Cath?" He asked, still finding it difficult to believe. "How could you think of killing someone? And not just anyone, but Cassian’s wife?? Did you really lose a screw on your head when you made such a stupid decision? Weren’t you afraid you’d get arrested?? Didn’t you think about the family’s name??"
"I’m sorry." Catherine pleaded between sobs. "It wasn’t supposed to kill her I promise, I’m being framed here. Someone must have added something else to the bottle which caused it..if...if you don’t believe me, I can get a new one and take it myself, I’m willing to test it if that’ll prove to you that I had no intention of killing her. Why don’t you believe me??"
"I don’t believe you because I’m very much aware of what your obsession with Cas can lead to. I told you countless times to forget him, he’s married and only loves his wife, but you wouldn’t listen to me, and now look at where your stubbornness and jealousy has lead you to, you’re entangled with a suicide-murder case. Are you happy now?"
Orson never imagined a day like this would come when he would scold his sister with such anger. He had always done what he could to protect her cause he loved her, he pampered her, and this was partly his fault because he had failed to keep an eye on her as his older brother, and that has led her astray.
"Orson, Orson, listen to me." She grabbed hold of her brother’s hand before he could walk away from her. "Don’t do this, I’ll lose everything if mother and father finds out, you have to help me.. please."
"I did try to help you." Orson sighed, feeling his heart turn heavy as he no longer had the strength to yell. "I tried to save you from this even before it happened. Why did you think I made sure Father never lets you visit the Albrecht’s home? Cause I knew you’d be hurt and Cassian isn’t someone who cares about your feelings Cath, I tried to save you from the aches and I understood your pain, but if you just listened..." his voice trailed off as he felt deeply hurt by her actions, and he released his hand from her grasp.
"I’m sorry, I can’t help you with this, you’ll have to pay for the crimes you committed."
"No no, Mother and father, they’ll kick me out if that ever happens." Catherine grabbed his hand once again, refusing to let him leave as she shook her head, her fears growing. "Mother, father, they only care about their good status and won’t hesitate to throw me out in order to save themselves, you...you are the only one who loves me in this family, no one else has cared for me the way you do, please..help me just this once, I promise...I promise I’ll do whatever it is you say, I promise...but don’t abandon me."
More tears sprang out from her eyes as she wept, refusing to let go off Orson’s hand as she grasped him desperately.
"I need some time alone." He yanked his hand free from her grip before walking away, and Catherine sank to the ground as she could do nothing to stop him from leaving, further leading to more tears as she tried to call him back.
Catherine still found this to be a nightmare, she wasn’t ready to believe that her simple act to get revenge has led to her biggest downfall. If Orson won’t help her, then it would be impossible for him to help her regarding the strange man that keeps tormenting and trying to kill her.
How will she survive if he comes for her again??
"What have I done!" She covered her face with both her palms, realizing how her jealousy and obsession had gotten the best of her, and Jeremy... his greed and insatiable lust had led him to his grave, and it won’t be too long before she joins him, she could feel it.
Her parents are the last person she could possibly meet. Since she isn’t related to the Marquees by blood, it would be easier for them to throw her out whilst their good title remains intact.
She’d end up in the streets, and that strange man would follow her like her second shadow till he finally kills her.
The servants moving around had stopped after feeling bad for their Lady who hadn’t stopped crying, and when they tried to get close to her, Catherine shut them a glare that sent them taking many steps away from her.
"Stay back! All of you! None of you can help me! So don’t even think about coming close to me!! You all are....are..." Not willing to complete her derogatory statement, she got to her feet and rushed out of the dining, going to find Orson once again.
After she had left, one of the young maids with blonde hair packed in a ponytail whispered to her fellow maid. "Did the heavens answer my prayer without notifying me?"
She tried not to giggle out before the insane princess returns, and her fellow maid who was also as young as her whispered back. "To be honest, she deserves to go through this, being the daughter of a Marquees had spoilt her rotten, and she always has something evil to say regarding all of us."
The maid sighed. "I feel bad for Master Orson, having to put up with an ill-mannered sister like Lady Catherine. The family should have adopted a more noble child rather than picking Catherine. Master Orson should stop saving her and let her suffer."
"She’s in this state and still has the strength to be rude! She’ll never change." Another maiden concluded in a harrumphed tone before exiting the dinning, and so did the rest of them.
Outside the home of the Marquees, Elijah watched the building with a smirk gracing his lips, and just thinking about the sorrows this family was going to face in a few days made him even more excited.
"Cassian." He uttered when the newly acquainted vampire came into mind. "I wonder, how will you save this family from what I intend to do to them.... You are likely to get exposed if you cross my path again, and only when I expose you to your people will you understand how wrong of a decision you’ve made to protect them."
He sounded bitter, and only after making that promise did he go back into his darkness.
