Chapter 107: Questions & Accusations (2)
"Did you..!!!.." Cassian’s voice trailed off as his expression turned aghast. The corny smile on Elijah’s lips broadened, revealing his fangs as he fancied the look of disbelief on the young lad’s face. He felt this unexplainable thrill watching the guilt that envisioned his features, and it was one he didn’t want to see end just yet.
"He had it coming." Saying this so nonchalantly, Elijah drew out one of his twin blades, running his fingers lightly through the extreme sharp edges. "Geoffrey knew the consequences for revealing what he shouldn’t, death awaited him, but you see humans never listen, and that is what I don’t understand about them." He sighed. "I used his own invention to send him to the grave, and I gave him the easiest, painless death by stabbing him straight in the heart. Wasn’t I kind enough?"
The sarcastic smile on his lips faded as though it was never even there. "If I knew he snitched this much, I would have decapitated all of his limbs and turned them into useful firewood, tsk! His blood wasn’t that tasty anyway."
"Why are you telling me this?" As disgusted as Cassian was to hear this, there was a nagging feeling that told him Elijah wasn’t just speaking for show-off, and it turns out he was right.
"Take a quick guess, it’s because I want you to be aware of what you’re up against." He snapped his fingers, letting the echoes ring around the silent street. "Geoffrey revealed what he knew, but unfortunately for you, you can’t tell anyone without having enough proof as it is required for your job. No one will believe we exist since we haven’t left even a trail of blood for them to follow, and if you stupidly try to expose yourself, you’ll be dead meat."
Elijah’s tone came off as a warning. "If you don’t want to be a part of us, then keep your mouth shut about what you know, stay away from our business and nobody will be harmed. If you keep trying to discover secrets you can’t handle, then you won’t survive it. I advise you to give up, and like every other lame detective that tried to solve this case, tell your fucking authorities that you failed, else you will join the Baron and poor Williams in their grave."
Cassian’s blood ran cold at the mention of William’s and Madeleine’s father. He was waiting for Elijah to say more, but the vampire remained quiet as he turned away.
Looking up, the day was starting to brighten bit by bit, and Elijah let out a soft hiss as he took cover in the shadows.
"This calls for my exit." Ignoring the mute vampire, Elijah turned to take his leave when something made him halt in his steps, and he turned around to look at Cassian. "If you interrupt my hunt another time, you won’t get away so easily, I will be taking bites out of your limbs instead."
With those words being said, he disappeared into the darkness of the Alleyway, and Cassian was left alone in the empty street.
His mind continuously replayed what was being uttered regarding the Baron and his uncle.
"What does he know?"
Returning to the mansion unnoticed, Cassian quietly went up the stairs and successfully stepped into his room without spotting anyone around.
Closing the door behind him, he was about to sigh in relief when he turned to meet a pair of black orbs staring at him, and he was instantly startled to see Madeline awake that he planned on racing out of his room, if only he hadn’t already closed the door.
"Maddie?" He blinked in startlement, looking like a moon-caught ghost as those dark orbs pierced right through his soul.
She had been waiting for him.
"You don’t say...but I recently thought of something." Madeline rose from the bed, taking unhurried steps towards the young lad who couldn’t dismiss the idea that he was in trouble.
"What do you mean?"
"I borrowed handcuffs from Orson," she smiled intuitively. "And I was thinking of putting them to great use. From now on, whenever we want to go to bed, I’ll handcuff our hands together so I can be aware of when you intend to sneak in or out of the mansion like a thief."
Cassian’s brow arched when he got referred to as a thief by his own wife, and did she mention handcuffs??
"You can’t do that."
"And I’m too young to die from a heart attack, and currently that’s what you intend on giving me, so I am going ahead with this recommendation."
Turning away from the young lad who could sense her boiling anger, she headed back to the bed, arranging the bed sheet and blankets.
"You don’t need to...."
"I want to do it!" She cut him off with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes, and Cassian went silent as he massaged the back of his neck, finally aware of the trouble he’s in. Now he understands why his mother approved of Madeline, turns out she can be just as scary as his mother.
"Do you need help?"
"Not at all, I slept on the cold bed so I shall tend to the bed myself." She kept smiling, and that only made Cassian uncomfortable.
"Don’t be like this, I’ll help." Despite her refusal, Cassian reached for the other end of the bedsheet, wanting to help her fix the bed from that angle, but the woman suddenly drew it in an attempt to make him release the sheet, but Cassian remained relentless.
"Let go."
"Maddie...stop."
"I don’t need your help."
"I don’t need you to need it, stop dragging it." Cassian equally pulled the sheet, and since his strength was not something Maddie’s strength could be compared to, Madeline felt overmatched as she ended up being pulled onto bed along with the sheets, making her fall on it, to her own surprise and shock.
"Urghgh!!" He heard her groan as though offended by her own lack of power.
Cassian’s eyes widened slightly seeing her topple onto the bed, and he immediately pinned his lips together in an attempt to stifle his laughter.
"You ruined my arrangements!!" He could hear the frustration in her voice as she carried a pillow and hurled it in his direction.
"Hey! You’re the one on the bed, how am I to blame?"
"Don’t talk to me!" She reached for the second pillow and hurled it in his direction. This time, Cassian had to reach for the woman on the bed who wouldn’t stop throwing pillows at him with a no smiling face.
"How can you derive joy from hurting me." he reached for both her hands, stopping her as she glared at him. "You hurt me first, where did you sneak off to? I was so worried when I didn’t find you, and after what happened the last time you went off at night, I started to think negatively till I couldn’t sleep, and you didn’t even leave me a note! You’re just as cruel!"
"Maddie."
When she settled down to look at him, she noticed the smoldering look in his eyes that made her blink in a daze.
"You haven’t changed." He sighed before nodding his head in defeat. "Fine, I won’t do it again. I will never leave your side without leaving a note, okay?"
"Keep your reassurance, I’m chaining our hands together from now on so I know you won’t. I’m not ready to be a widow."
"You never seem to be ready for anything, silly woman, you’re so stubborn.. I just said I won’t do it again." He played innocent while giving her that look she couldn’t resist, meanwhile inching his handsome face closer to Madeline who didn’t back away.
He bit his lower lip while stealing glances at her pink inviting lips before meeting her eyes that glimmered with anticipation.
Just when she expected him to kiss her like he usually does, he suddenly backs away and gets out of bed.
