Chapter 274: The Mourning Ceremony. Part 13

KNOCM! KNOCK! KNOCK!

A noise came into his ears as Adonis was cultivating in his room, a cell to be precise since the day he was imprisoned for hiding his ability and for hacking into the server.

Though there was quite a lot of evidence that he was the reason behind his friend’s death and one of their disappearance, he wasn’t charged with anything since there was no proof. But he was still the suspect in the incident so he was under 24-hour surveillance since they couldn’t figure out what kind of ability he held.

On Yerth, a person can only manifest one ability. So it’s not difficult to understand his ability and record how it works. But it was the opposite for Adonis.

The corporation couldn’t even figure out anything. The machine they used for evaluating one’s ability was saying he was a normal person with no ability. Of course, there wasn’t any ability in Futaba’s body. The ability Adonis was using was pure magic that requires mana and spells.

Which made him more suspicious and was guarded with 4 A class ability users. The fire queen Hero was also one of them.

Adonis opened his eyes and looked at the door where the fire queen, Ironi, was standing.

"Why do you keep sitting like that always? Don’t you get tired of it? Aren’t you bored?"

"I’m not idling around. I’m cultivating."

"What is this cultivation you’re talking about? Is this related to your ability? I am curious."

"I’ve no intention of telling you anything before I can have you."

"That is sexual harassment, you know."

Adonis chuckled a bit and closed his eyes to go back to his meditation position. "You’re full of lies, Inori. Now please get out of my room. I am busy."

Inori was annoyed. She wanted to have a chat to make him reveal his ability because the higher-ups said so. But seeing him paying no attention to her made her angry. She then approached him and grabbed his shirt. "Oi Futaba. As you know, I am in charge of guarding you. You can’t just order me to leave this damn cell anytime you want. I get to choose whenever I want to leave. If you don’t like it, just say how your ability works. Maybe we can shorten things much easier than taking the hard way."

"I already told everyone that if you can give me a day, I will tell you everything." He winked and went to bed without paying any attention to her because it was past 12 at night. It was past his bedtime according to his everyday schedule.

At that moment, Detective Shida walked in and said, "Futaba. Mind if I have some minutes?"

"Tsk..." Adonis kicked his blanket and sat on the edge of his bed. "Don’t you humans have to sleep? It’s f*cking midnight!"

"Sorry, but I have some things to discuss." He put tons of papers on the table and said, "I have collected all the files related to the empty missing case since 1940. I have found 4, one of them was old and didn’t have enough information so I rejected it. Futaba Adachi, seems like you know about this matter. Maybe you can solve these cases."

He then put 4 files on the table separately and again said, "Now tell me what is the reason behind it. I will record this moment on camera so make sure to tell everything. I need it."

*Sigh...*

Adonis took a seat in front of him and took the latest case with his left hand which was being protected by a device that cancels any ability. It was heavy but he was pretty much okay with warning 4 of them on each of his limbs.

He read all 4 cases for some moment and started to explain before taking a 5-minute break.

"Why do you think this superhuman ability exists in the human body? Do you believe in god who is the one that gives these abilities to humans?"

Inori replied, "I don’t believe in god and supernatural stuff."

"But you use your ability that defines every natural law of science. Well, let’s keep that aside. I will start by explaining the missing cases.

I don’t care if you don’t believe in god but the reason behind their disappearance is because of a god who loved to give out challenges.

The reason behind these people exists because they broke the rules of the game. Just like how Kanna and Rika died by breaking the law.

Let me show you something interesting."

Adonis then turned on the system screen and gave everyone access along with the camera so it could record it.

Then, a red floating screen appeared.

Shida and Inori’s eyes were almost on their forehead when they saw a screen floating. So they said, "What is this? Is this your ability?"

"No, this isn’t my ability you dumbass. It’s called a system that evaluates your status and gives you information, quests and also warning. Although you’re not supposed to see it, a bug appeared so I can show anyone easily.

After we entered the house, this screen only appeared in front of me with a welcome, saying that we should play a game. As soon as the message came, all of them started to act differently and decided to play games as if they were under some sort of control.

Of course, the same thing happened to all of these kids who entered an abandoned house, a hospital, a forest and a graveyard.

The screen appears in front of only one person and he becomes the leader of the team. He becomes the one who has to make sure everyone is following the rule or else, people will disappear.

This is a natural phenomenon that will continue to repeat every 20 years but I don’t know why. Maybe the time difference between the Yerth and the controller who’s taking care of this game.

But this time, a bug has appeared."

"A bug?" Shida asked.

"Yes. A bug that made the system cancel the game. I was given 3 options. One, Restart the game. The second option was to leave the game and lose your life to save others. And the last one was to wait 3 years so the system could reboot and I can safely get out without losing my life or anything. But it didn’t give any proper instructions on how the game would end.

The game was supposed to end when I selected the last option but the system is acting weird. But after Rika’s disappearance, I think the game isn’t over yet. I’m afraid the 5, even the people around me, will randomly teleport into the house or will disappear."

Shida kept silent for about 10 minutes to process all of his explanations in his head. Not only him, but Inori was also at her loss.

"What you’re saying is, the culprit behind these disappearances isn’t caused by some person. It’s caused by a game. And you guys are just the victims."

"So you’re finally getting it now. In this world of superhumanity, why would you even make yourself think there won’t be anything supernatural happening around? There are even worse things in this world that exist that you might not even want to know.

Shida, you can’t win against it. It’s a thing that doesn’t belong in this world."

....

In the blink of an eye, Adonis found himself in a different place with Shida and Inori in front of him. Not only him, but Futaba’s classmates were there as well. And the place they were at was nowhere but the abandoned house.

"Just what is going on, you damn system?" Adonis sighed and stood up to check his surroundings.

[Error]

[The system couldn’t figure out the issue.]

[Please stand by at the quest zone for 30 minutes]

[Some bugs may appear in the process of refreshing progress. Be aware]

"Bugs? Refresh? What is going on?" Ryoko yelled and again said, "What is this red screen floating in front of me? Is this some kind of system?"

Adonis turned his attention to Ryoko and asked, "You can see that as well? This bug is getting out of hand."

"Futaba, you knew something about it, didn’t you? You dragged us all here."

"Do you think I would drag you here when I have a GPS collar around my neck? I am under 24 hours of surveillance so just imagine what the higher-ups will do to me now since I am not inside the agency. Tsk.. even I am not even wearing proper clothing." Looking at Inori, Adonis again said, "See? This is how the error is messing up with everything. Now we all have to wait until the system reboots this part of the game.

He was standing on the dirty floor barefoot.

"Tsk..."

Mahiko on the other hand was curious about the system screen. So he started to ask various questions about it but only the answer it showed was error. Because the system was built to aid gods and demigods. Not mortals.

Shida on the other hand was shocked to see the sudden change of his surroundings. Not only that, but he was also scared to see the haunted house and the red glitching screen with a warning sign.

"What is going on?"

"Can’t you see? We are trapped now." Adonis explained and sighed in frustration for not being able to rest.
