Xun Liqiang said, "Let’s do this; since no one has the heart for local affairs, let’s you and I discuss it. We won’t make any official appointments for now, just have them oversee the work. What do you think?’’

Such a way of operating was indeed unprecedented. Ji Yang thought it over and felt this was probably the better approach.

Xun Liqiang sighed, "I suppose that’s the only way.’’

Ji Yang said, "Having a comrade oversee the work is necessary; I think this can be carried out.’’

"Yes, now in the township, aside from the two of us, there’s only Zhou Shan and Feng Jing; we four are here.’’

Ji Yang said, "Le Jianjun and Guo Huaijie said over the phone that if there are any cadre adjustments, they will be supportive.’’

"That’s good. I’ll inform them and call a meeting.’’

Soon, a team meeting was convened at the summons of Xun Liqiang.

When Ji Yang arrived at the small meeting room, Le Jianjun was also sitting there, looking dejected.

"Comrades, you all know the situation in the township. Many things are stalled, and Mr. Ji Yang believes that staffing the departments properly is essential for work to proceed. I agree this is the case, which is why we have convened today’s meeting. Except for a few who asked for leave, more than half of us are present; we can proceed with the meeting.’’

After finishing his statement, Xun Liqiang looked at Ji Yang.

Ji Yang said, "Secretary Xun and I have discussed that the adjustment of cadres to their rightful positions is necessary. Some positions are vacant, so the main content of today’s meeting is the matter of cadre adjustments. If we can settle on this, the cadre team will stabilise.’’

Xun Liqiang said, "Everyone has been considering this matter at the grassroots level, so let’s begin the discussion. Since Qiu Shujuan is on leave and cannot be here, I will speak to the situation of the cadres..."

The first topic naturally was the choice of director for the Party and Government Office. Although a conclusion had already been reached on the matter, it’s unfortunate that Old Zhou, who was supposed to oversee the work, had secretly switched allegiance to Guo Huaijie; Ji Yang informed Xun Liqiang of this, angering Xun Liqiang. Thus, today he did not propose Old Zhou and instead, Ji Yang proposed Zhan Yongtao.

Feng Jing glanced at Ji Yang and immediately said, "I think that’s acceptable.’’

"Now that Zhan Yongtao is the director of the Party and Government Office, let’s invite him to attend the meeting and take the minutes,’’ Xun Liqiang suggested.

Ji Yang nodded, "I think that’s good,’’ and as he finished speaking, he stood up and walked outside.

From today’s meeting, Ji Yang could see that Le Jianjun had completely lost his ambitions; whatever suggestion made probably wouldn’t be opposed by him. He was now simply trying to save face for everyone, to avoid being unfavored should someone rise to power later.
