The Alpha's long lost heir -
Chapter 148: Kaelos
Chapter 148: Kaelos
He entered the dark halls leading to the throne room. There was not a single ray of light in the hallway. Growling, he walked grudgingly to the throne room.
"Kaelos," his mother called softly.
He bowed his head, "Yes mother?"
"Where is she? You promised to bring her home."
He shook his head, "What do you mean? You made a promise to bring her here!"
He sighed, "I am sorry mother, there was nothing I could do. Her brother was so furious when he saw me. I could not get past him," he exhaled, mumbling the words to himself.
"You have disappointed me greatly Kaelos, I trusted you. Do you not know your we risk Astrid claiming the throne?!"
Astrid was his half brother. His father had married five wives, but only his mother, and his step brother’s mother birthed a male.
His mother, Lunaris was trying to secure the throne for him since their father died. She was the first wife, so she had an upper hand by nature, but her late husband’s second wife, Lyra was proving to he stubborn.
He had said the first of his sons to get a child, a heir to the throne would be king.
His brother Astrid had impregnated his mate, but the child couldn’t make it. Lunaris saw it as an opportunity, and had made sure her son Kaelos fought for the throne, by making him impregnate a she wolf too.
"I think she is pregnant already, but.. her brother is not willing to let me go near her."
"Who is this brother of hers?" She asked gruffly, her eyes blazing with fury.
"Oberon."
She threw her staff at him, but he was quick to dodge it.
"Mother!"
"How dare he?! I can not, and will not risk you losing this throne to Astrid! Never!"
Kaelos stood in the dimly lit throne room, the echo of his mother’s fury still ringing in his ears. He clenched his fists, struggling to contain the frustration bubbling inside him. Lunaris, ever the calculating matriarch, fixed him with a steely gaze, her anger barely contained.
"Mother, I will find a way to bring her here," Kaelos promised, his voice low and determined.
Lunaris turned away, her dark robes swishing around her ankles. "You better, Kaelos. Do not think for a moment that Astrid will not seize any opportunity to outmaneuver us. The throne is within our grasp, but one misstep, and it will all be for nothing."
Kaelos nodded, though doubt gnawed at him. Oberon was no ordinary foe. His presence alone had sent a chill down Kaelos’ spine when he attempted to approach Nora. Her brother had stood as a wall of menace, his eyes burning with protective rage.
"Mother, Oberon is not someone to be underestimated," Kaelos said carefully. "He has a strength... a darkness about him."
Lunaris turned sharply, her eyes narrowing. "Darkness? What darkness?"
Kaelos hesitated. He had seen something in Oberon’s eyes, a flicker of something ancient, something more than just a protective brother. "I can’t explain it. But he’s dangerous."
Lunaris stared at her son, her expression hardening. "Then you must become more dangerous. If you wish to sit on the throne, Kaelos, you must overcome every obstacle. Even if that means eliminating Oberon."
Kaelos stiffened at the suggestion. "Eliminate him?"
"Yes," Lunaris said coldly. "If he stands in your way, then he must be removed."
Kaelos swallowed hard, the weight of his mother’s words pressing down on him. But before he could respond, a sudden noise interrupted their tense exchange—a rustling sound from the shadows of the throne room. Both turned, eyes narrowing as they searched the darkness.
"Who’s there?" Lunaris demanded, her voice sharp.
From the shadows emerged a figure, cloaked in dark, flowing robes. The hood obscured their face, but a pair of piercing eyes glinted from within.
"Forgive my intrusion, Lady Lunaris," the figure said, their voice a low whisper that echoed off the stone walls. "But I could not help but overhear your... dilemma."
The figure entered the room, and it turned out to be Lyra.
The tension in the room grew thicker as Lyra stepped out of the shadows, a sarcastic smile playing on her lips. She looked at Lunaris and Kaelos with a mix of disdain and amusement, her eyes gleaming with malice.
"Poor Lunaris," Lyra began, her voice dripping with mock sympathy. "I always knew you and your son were a failure. He cannot even bring his own heir home!" She let out a cold, mirthless laugh that echoed off the stone walls.
Kaelos’ fists clenched at his sides, his nails digging into his palms as he struggled to contain his anger. He could feel the heat rising in his chest, his wolf instincts urging him to lash out, to silence her taunting words. But he knew better. He had to stay composed, especially in front of his mother. One wrong move, and he could jeopardize everything.
Lunaris, however, was not so restrained. Her eyes narrowed into dangerous slits, and with a sudden burst of fury, she stormed toward Lyra, her face twisted in a scowl. "Do not test me, Lyra," she hissed, her voice low and venomous. "I swear, I will kill you with my bare hands if you push me any further!"
Lyra didn’t flinch. Instead, she crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow, her smirk widening. "Is that a threat, Lunaris? How unbecoming of you. But then again, desperation does bring out the worst in people, doesn’t it?"
Lunaris’ hands twitched, itching to wrap around Lyra’s throat. The two women stood mere inches apart, the air between them crackling with animosity. Kaelos watched, his heart pounding as he debated whether to intervene. But he knew his mother—once she set her mind to something, there was little anyone could do to stop her.
Lyra, sensing the danger, took a small step back, but her mocking expression remained. "Honestly, Lunaris, it’s pathetic. You were the first wife, the one with the ’upper hand,’ and yet here you are, scrambling to secure your son’s place on the throne. Meanwhile, Astrid and I simply wait. Time will reveal your failures soon enough."
Lunaris’ eyes blazed with hatred, her breathing heavy as she fought to control herself. "You may laugh now, Lyra, but remember this—victory is never guaranteed until the end. My son will claim the throne, and when He does, you will regret every word you have spoken today."
Lyra’s smile faltered for a brief moment, but she quickly recovered, her expression cold and calculating. "We will see, Lunaris. We will see." With that, she turned and swept out of the room, her departure leaving an icy silence in her wake.
Lunaris stood there, her hands still trembling with the urge to strike, but she forced herself to breathe deeply, to calm the storm raging inside her. Kaelos remained silent, watching his mother regain her composure, though the tension still hung heavily in the air.
Finally, Lunaris turned to her son, her voice steady but filled with a quiet resolve. "We cannot afford to fail, Kaelos. We must be vigilant. The throne is ours by right, and we will not let it slip away."
Kaelos nodded, his own resolve hardening. "I will not let you down, Mother. We will fight for what is ours, no matter the cost."
Together, they stood in the dimly lit room, united by their shared determination, knowing that the battle for the throne had only just begun.
Lunaris turned to the throne. Her eyes began to tear up, she sniffed, "Do you see? You see why you should be hasty about this? I just got humiliated right in front of you," her voice broke.
Kaelos walked over to his mother, and held her shoulders, "You should stop pressuring yourself mother, stop thinking too much."
"How can I not think too much?! Lyra is the second wife! Her son also came after you! Why should he ascend the throne?!" She yelled, turning around quickly to face him, her veins in her face already popping out because she was too furious.
"Please calm mother," he tried to calm her down but she only slapped his hands off, "Why can you not be a Lycan that you are? Do not tell me your wolf is already dead!"
He flinched, "Why would you say that?"
"It is obvious, if not, you would have fought past Oberon, and brought that she wolf home!"
"It is not as easy as you make it seem mother!"
She paused, "Did you just talk back?"
He sighed realizing what he had just done, "I.. am sorry mother, I just.. you are making this harder for me," he said softly.
Her face grimaced, "I should have known. You are weak, it seems you are not ready to take up the throne, no worries then, Astrid can do it," she nodded slowly.
"It is not like that, why are you making it a lot more worse?"
She turned on her heels to face the door, "Do not speak to me Kaelos, until you bring that she wolf here, you will not hear my voice," she walked out of her room.
