The Alpha: Claiming His Enemy's Daughter
Chapter 521: THE CONSEQUENCES

Chapter 521: THE CONSEQUENCES

Iris was dozing off when Haco came into the study room. She insisted on staying behind with Cane as she wanted to return to their bedroom together with him.

Even though Sofia was no longer occupying her bedroom, she felt uncomfortable sleeping on the same bed some other woman had used. More so, she got used to sleeping with Cane by her side. It would feel so weird and empty without him to hold her.

Therefore, it didn’t take long for her to sneak back into Cane’s bed and sleep there, the Alpha of course knew when his mate came and snuggled against him. He didn’t have any complaints and cuddled with her instead.

After that, it was an unspoken decision that Iris wouldn’t use her bedroom, even though the bar had been torn down and she could come and go between the two rooms, she simply didn’t bother to stay on her side.

There was no need for her to go back and forth and waste her energy and time when she knew where she wanted to be.

"What do you want?" Cane asked, he was going to call it a day. But this sorcerer came in right before he finished the last report and gave the last order to Oliver.

"Why do I feel like you don’t like to see me?" Haco frowned. "We have not met for four days now. Nice to see you well, Iris." His voice softened when he saw the Luna lift her head and rub her sleepy eyes.

"Haco," Iris greeted him.

"Are you done reading the book?" Haco gave her a book for her to learn about various powers that a magic user could use. Now that they had confirmed Iris was related to the first Serafim, they needed to tread this matter carefully. Because not only would they attract their enemy toward her and put her in danger, but this information could be used to make the people in the Holy Kingdom their enemy as well, since it would be an insult to say Iris was also a Serafim.

More so, they still needed to dig deeper into this new revelation and also, there was still no news on Lady Cyan. They hoped one of the monsters had eaten her alive, so half of their problems would be solved, though it was only wishful thinking.

"I have read half of it," Iris replied. Aside from learning medicine from Grace and Ardand, while helping the injured warriors, who were still recuperating inside the tents, she was also learning more about magic users and the powers they held. It was a complicated thing and she realized her knowledge about it only grazed the surface level, though she had read a lot of books on the same topic.

Haco was guiding her and she would spend an hour or two everyday with him.

"Good. Good." Haco nodded in satisfaction, but then his expression became serious when he looked at Cane. "There is something important I need to tell you. I thought I could keep it to myself, but then I felt like it would not be right if you don’t know about this."

"What is it?" Cane narrowed his eyes, as Haco sat down on the chair in front of him and Iris. He looked so exhausted and even more fragile. Cane had asked Grace to check his condition, but the healer only said his health just deteriorated rapidly without being able to place the cause of it. "You can’t let Zeke extract the lycan out of you. Don’t even think about it or let that happen."

Zeke was Cyan’s father. Haco had disclosed that Zeke was his senior when they were still in the Holy Kingdom, but then, his access to information about him was close to nil. More so, he had left the Holy Kingdom decades ago.

He had been debating with himself after he learned how Zeke had tried to extract the lycan out of Cane’s body.

"You can’t let that happen." Haco said seriously, he leaned his body forward and stared into Cane’s dark eyes. "Don’t."

"Why?" Iris asked, she could sense there was something more to it. "Why not?"

It didn’t mean Cane wanted to let go of the lycan, especially when he realized the power that this cursed creature held could turn the tables. So if he had to choose, it would be rather he had the lycan than his enemy got a hold of the power of this creature.

Haco pressed his lips into a thin line, as his brows creased deeply. He had thought about what he was going to say, but as it turned out, it was way more difficult than he imagined when he really had to do it.

"Look." Haco took a deep breath and stared at the two people before his eyes. "You are so wrong, if you think there will be no side effects after the lycan was extracted from me. There are and it is lethal."

Cane’s brows creased and Iris didn’t like the sound of it. They really couldn’t take a break, if anything, it felt like they were jumping from one trouble into another, without being able to fix the previous one or even discuss a solution for it.

"Talk clearly, Haco, what do you mean by that?" Iris clenched her fists and observed the old man before her eyes. Aside from the extreme signs of fatigue, she found nothing life threatening about him. "Can’t you spill everything at once?" She was anxious and her patience was running thin, as her mind raced with all the worst possibilities, while Cane didn’t show much change in his expression.

"I don’t have much time. I only have less than a year now, probably six months. I can feel my health deteriorating quickly. You must have learned about that from Grace and now you can ask the poor healer to stop her attempts to cure me, because there is nothing you can do to help me."

Haco then told them about what the lycan had informed him about how he would end.

The lycan had resided within him for so long, so his life force and his had molded together, therefore, when the lycan was extracted from him, the outcome was fatal for Haco, since the lycan was way stronger than him.

"It will be more fatal for you, Alpha, because you have found a way to use the lycan’s power as well, the consequences of it will be more deadly for you."

All that time, Haco didn’t really use the lycan’s power, since he didn’t know how to, but he got a year to live after the creature had been extracted from him, thus in Cane’s case, it could be less than that if he kept relying on the lycan’s power and used it constantly.

"Didn’t you know about this when you gave the lycan to Cane?" Iris stared at Haco, she was not sure how to feel. While, it was fine for Cane to use the lycan’s power, as long as the creature resided within him, but there was someone out there, who could perform the magic, through which he could separate Cane from the lycan. The thought of it alone terrified Iris.

Haco scoffed, he looked annoyed. "No. That lycan is very cunning and ungrateful. Of course, he knew I would never agree to let my lifespan shorten by giving the lycan away to Cane, so he didn’t mention it. I only thought; finally, I can get rid of such nuisance. How naïve of me."

Iris grimaced, she then stared at Cane when she caught sight of the dark wisp coming out of his palm. He had been practicing controlling it for the past few days, trying to understand how to control it, now he was in tune with the lycan within him.

"Cane, don’t do that again!" Iris grabbed his hand in an attempt to stop him from practicing controlling the dark wisp again. "Don’t do it again." She panicked and with her touch, the dark wisp disappeared. She was the only one who could do that, even though he still tried, he wouldn’t be able to produce the dark wisp once Iris held onto him.

"Iris, calm down," Cane said patiently, he cupped her face, as her eyes started tearing up. She looked so upset.

Cane must have missed this part of information, where Lu told Haco about the side effects of his situation.

"I don’t want to calm down, I want you to promise me not to practice using the dark wisp again!" Iris was a little bit emotional now. "Cane, promise me..."

One year? Haco had less than one year and if the same thing happened to Cane, he would have an even shorter time, because he used power he was not supposed to have.

Iris started to cry when she knew what the answer Cane would give her. "Cane, no..." she whimpered. He would continue with his plan to practice using the dark wisp that was the lycan’s power and explore more about the power Lu held.

"Iris, you missed a point here," Cane said gently and patiently. "It will only happen if the lycan is extracted from me. Nothing will happen as long as the lycan stays within me."

"There is this man out there, who can do that." Iris was adamant.

"That’s all the more reason I need to use the lycan’s power, to protect myself. Do you think I will stand a chance in a direct battle with a dark sorcerer without the lycan’s power like what happened in the mountains?"

Iris was dumbstruck, she panicked too much to think in that way.
