Chapter 1005: Chapter 1005: Pretending to be Drunk
Shu Yu frowned. Before she could take a closer look, she heard Madam Deng exclaim, "Isn’t that Manager Qiu?"
Manager Qiu??
Shu Yu fixed her gaze. Indeed, it was him. Setting aside his disheveled hair and flushed face, it was undoubtedly the Manager Qiu from the cloth shop. What was going on?
Hearing his name, Manager Qiu waved his hand forcefully, "Who is Manager Qiu? Who? I’m not. I just want to buy wine. Hurry up and give it to me!"
With that, he pulled out a string of copper coins from his pocket and slammed it onto the counter. "If you don’t give it to me, I’ll, I’ll—"
He glanced around, staggered to the corner, picked up a chair, and raised it as if to smash the wine jar nearby.
Madam Deng’s eyes widened. "What are you doing? Put it down, put it down! I’ll give you the wine."
Two staff members quickly intervened, one snatching the chair while the other grabbed him around the waist and started dragging him out.
Madam Deng hurriedly poured the wine and handed it to him. Only then did Manager Qiu nod contentedly. Holding the wine jug, he drank as he staggered toward the door.
Madam Deng shook her head with a sigh.
Shu Yu looked toward the doorway. After a moment, she turned back and asked, "What’s wrong with Manager Qiu?"
Madam Deng didn’t know, but the quick-witted staff member Xiao Shu answered, "A few days ago, the boss of the cloth shop dismissed Manager Qiu, saying he had embezzled a significant amount of money over the years. Out of consideration for his long years of service, they didn’t report him to the authorities and let him off the hook. But they expelled him and another staff member from the shop."
Another staff member added, "Since a few days ago, Manager Qiu has been coming to the wine shop every so often to buy wine. Sometimes he’s drunk out of his mind, and sometimes he’s sober. At first, his family was with him, but now they don’t bother anymore."
"Luckily, he never asks for a specific type of wine. The wine we serve him isn’t strong."
Madam Deng frowned. "From now on, if he comes when he’s sober to buy wine, don’t sell it to him. If something happens later, people will blame us."
"Understood."
Madam Deng waved her hand, signaling the two staff members to get back to work, and then walked over to Shu Yu. "Did that scare you just now?"
Shu Yu smiled. "Not at all. It was just a bit unexpected."
Outside, Ah Ning was already calling for her. Shu Yu had been delayed a little too long, so she immediately bid farewell to Madam Deng.
"Mrs. Deng, you must be busy. I’ll take my leave."
"Goodbye."
Shu Yu left the wine shop and climbed into the mule carriage. Once the carriage started moving forward, she lifted the curtain to glance outside again.
Manager Qiu hadn’t gone far. He had found a corner to sit down and continued drinking.
Shu Yu smirked. Coming to act drunk in front of her—what was the point?
The smell of alcohol on Manager Qiu was real, but it wasn’t strong.
From her limited interactions with Manager Qiu, Shu Yu knew he was a heavy drinker. The mild wine sold to him by the staff wouldn’t have made him so completely inebriated.
More importantly, when he entered the shop, he had looked at Madam Deng, the two staff members, and other customers, but never at Shu Yu.
She had been standing right there, the closest person to him, yet he avoided her gaze with precision. There was no way he was actually drunk.
Pretending to be a drunkard and parading in front of her—what was he trying to say? That his current state of being dismissed and penniless was her fault?
Did he want her to feel guilty? Or perhaps take pity on him?
Shu Yu chuckled softly and let the curtain fall.
Not far away, Manager Qiu watched the mule carriage slowly disappear into the distance. Finally, he couldn’t hold back any longer and smashed the wine jug in his hand against the ground.
