Chapter 446 Zhou Family
Chapter 446: Chapter 446 Zhou Family
Zhou Guicheng, after learning about the Mu Family’s situation, rushed to the town hospital early the next morning.
"Uncle Mu, how could you be so foolish? If you died, how would you face Fei Yan?" Zhou Guicheng lamented with great anguish.
Old Mu had already broken his fever, and after drinking a bowl of porridge in the morning, he was feeling much better.
Looking at the grief-stricken face of Zhou Guicheng before him, he managed a slight smile.
"Your aunt is gone too, what meaning is there left in my life?"
"Uncle Mu, you can’t think like that. There is hope only when you’re alive. Don’t you want to catch the murderer who killed Fei Yan? Don’t you want to avenge her?" Zhou Guicheng implored Old Mu.
Old Mu’s hand, hidden under the quilt, clutched the sheets tightly, his face showing a sorrowful expression.
"Of course I want to, I dream about it, but so many years have passed, and even the police couldn’t find the murderer. What can I possibly do..."
He looked heartbroken, and because of his weakness, he seemed to be somewhat breathless, with a slight tremor coursing through his entire body.
"Uncle Mu, are you alright? I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have brought this up, just close your eyes and rest well," Zhou Guicheng said hurriedly.
Upon hearing this, Old Mu obediently closed his eyes; if he didn’t know that Zhou Guicheng was the murderer, he might have been grateful for the concern.
But at this moment, he felt nothing but anger, a fury burning so hot that he wanted to leap up and bring an axe down on Zhou Guicheng’s head.
Reason, however, told him he couldn’t do that right now. He was old, and currently bedridden, not strong enough to confront him.
Zhou Guicheng had a rather robust build, standing at about 178 centimeters, with a simple and honest-looking face, making an excellent first impression as someone trustworthy.
Indeed, his behavior over the years had been consistent with this impression, leading both his relatives and friends to think of Zhou Guicheng as a decent man.
For these reasons, despite his suspicions, Old Mu thought perhaps he was just being overly paranoid.
And since Zhou Guicheng hadn’t shown any flaws over the years, Old Mu had buried his suspicions deep within.
"Don’t worry about your aunt’s funeral; my parents will help take care of it. My mom made chicken soup this morning, and will bring it over to you around noon..."
As Zhou Guicheng spoke, he helped Old Mu adjust his quilt.
Actually, Old Mu and Zhou Guicheng were not the only ones in the hospital room at that time.
Zhou Cuiping and Mu Feiyan were also standing nearby, with Zhou Cuiping staring blankly at Zhou Guicheng.
From Zhou Guicheng’s words and actions since he came in, it was hard to associate him with the murderer of her daughter.
But it was impossible that her daughter would accuse someone wrongly; thinking this, and seeing Zhou Guicheng’s simple-minded look again, only made her feel a chill down her spine.
What a deep scheme it was, playing their family like pawns.
Like a venomous snake lurking in the shadows, coldly watching over them, destroying everything her family had.
-----------------
After Old Mu’s fever broke, apart from feeling some weakness, there were no other significant issues.
Eating and resting well would soon see him make a full recovery.
Since that was the case, Old Mu didn’t stay long at the town hospital and was discharged in the afternoon.
Upon leaving the hospital, he went directly to his house. Gazing at the burnt ruins, Old Mu stared blankly, without the slightest trace of sorrow.
"Old Mu, discharged so soon? Are you sure you’re alright..."
"Old Mu, why not stay at my place for a few days, I’ve got a spare room..."
"Old Mu, come over for dinner tonight, and don’t be too upset..."
"Old Mu, we helped recover some stuff from the house that wasn’t burned, piled it up beside; you can see what might still be of use..."
...
Neighbors and acquaintances from the town, noticing Old Mu, expressed their concerns warmly, indicating what a good rapport Old Mu had maintained in the town.
Old Mu smiled and responded to everyone until Zhou Maoshu arrived.
Zhou Maoshu, Zhou Guicheng’s father, naturally had a good relationship with Old Mu due to the ties between their families.
"I was just at the hospital, they said you’d been discharged; I figured you’d be here. Come, let’s go to my house," Zhou Maoshu said, pulling on Old Mu’s arm to take him home.
Old Mu didn’t resist, and instead said, "I haven’t taken care of your sister-in-law’s matters yet; let me deal with those first, then I’ll go to your place."
"You’re still weak; how can you handle these things? Leave the rest to Meixia and me, we assure you it’ll be properly taken care of."
"Well... thank you and Meixia. I really don’t know how to thank you both," Old Mu said, moved.
"Old Mu, it’s too formal of you to say so," Zhou Maoshu feigned annoyance at the courtesy.
"I’m sorry, I misspoke," Old Mu quickly replied.
"That’s better," Zhou Maoshu said happily.
"I’ll pick up some groceries, and tonight, we can have a proper drink," Zhou Maoshu continued.
"The doctor said I shouldn’t drink during this period," Old Mu said.
"That’s unfortunate," Zhou Maoshu replied regretfully.
"But it’s okay, we’ll do it when you’re better, but let’s still buy some groceries so we can have a nice meal tonight. It’s all in the past."
"But... some things are hard to move past," Old Mu said, melancholically.
Thinking Old Mu was recalling his daughter and wife again, Zhou Maoshu sighed, "Old Mu, at our age, we need to let go of things. Dwelling too much in the past doesn’t serve any purpose..."
Old Mu listened with a grin, appearing to be in a cheerful mood.
"You’re right, indeed, we should let go."
"Ah, that’s better. You’re only fifty-five, life can start over..."
"To say something unpleasant, your sister-in-law being bedridden for years not only was torturous for her but also a burden to you; now..."
"Alright, the words I said were a bit... over the line."
"No, I understand what you mean, thank you."
"Hey, no need to thank me."
Zhou Maoshu picked up some groceries in the town, and the two returned to the Zhou Family.
The Zhou Family’s house was similar to the burnt remains of Old Mu’s. A little boy was playing when they arrived, and upon seeing Zhou Maoshu, he joyfully ran up to greet him.
"Grandpa."
"Hey, my darling grandson, why not call him Grandpa Mu?"
Zhou Maoshu bent down, picked up his grandson to kiss him, then set him back down.
"Hello, Grandpa Mu," the little boy called out sweetly.
"Very good, you too,"
Old Mu said with a warm smile, patting the boy’s head.
"He looks just like your dad did when he was young."
Zhou Maoshu chuckled so hard his eyes were nearly closed as he opened a plastic bag he was holding and took out a roast duck leg to hand to the boy.
"Take it and enjoy."
"Thank you, Grandpa," the little boy happily accepted.
"Such a good kid," Old Mu commented with a smile.
Zhou Maoshu laughed, "The little guy is quite mischievous, but he’s well protected by his mom and grandma, acting like a little tyrant at home."
"You don’t protect him?"
"Haha..."
Zhou Maoshu could only laugh dryly, clearly admitting his own protective indulgence over his beloved grandson.
"What about his dad? Does Small Success spoil the boy?" Old Mu asked.
Though a bit puzzled by the question, Zhou Maoshu didn’t overthink it and truthfully replied, "Of course, cherishes the child even more than his mother. All his earnings are spent on this kid."
"Do you know how much that outfit he’s wearing costs? Two hundred eighty-three. I’ve never worn anything that expensive, and yet a little kid wears clothes so fine, it’s such a waste..."
Zhou Maoshu’s mouth said one thing, but his face beamed with joy the entire time.
Old Mu also laughed, even more happily than Zhou Maoshu.
