Chapter 71: I want to talk to you, Selene!
Selene POV
"goddess, are you alright?" I asked still seated giving a casual glance to the coffee stain that was beginning to soak into the fabric of her green gown giving it a pale red colour that looked like a blood stain.
I watched as she sprang to her feet, holding the front of her dress as she tried not to make too much distressing noise. Judging from how hot her coffee had been, I am sure she would get scalded, it was inevitable.
"Can you get me a maid?" she replied instead snatching the paper towel from the patio table as she dabbed at the stain.
"Certainly," I nodded "Someone would arrive soon. You see we were so enthusiastic about you joining us tonight, so all hands are on deck in the kitchen but in a few minutes, a maid should arrive. Anyways, do seat,".
Her eyes flashed with annoyance as she stared at me and I thought for a minute she wasn’t going to sit but she fixed a smile on her face as she settled in.
"What were you asking me about Noah, Luna?" She asked placing her hand demurely on her thighs.
"Yeah," I nodded regarding her quietly "Noah told me that both of you dated briefly until you left,".
"Briefly?" she arched a perfectly carved brow "4 years is hardly brief but we had the best relationship until I had to leave. Everyone thought we were going to end up together because of how very much in love we were. Sad it ended and in the messiest ways ever, I’m sure he told you!"
"Yeah, he did," I agreed "On our wedding night more like it when I mentioned that I hadn’t ever seen him around a woman. It’s strange how you were so perfect and you broke it off I presume?"
"It became boring... the same old routine and you must agree that Noah is one hella a wonderful man. I mean, he’s so good... almost perfect and it used to piss the hell out of me that we almost never had drama. Looking back," she exhaled as she played with her fingers "I realized that I made a huge mistake. He was the perfect man for me and I threw it all away because I felt there were better men out there,".
"So?" I asked, still watching her.
"Well, I never expected in my wildest dreams that he would get married. Noah is such an eccentric person and is used to getting stuck in one place,".
"Interesting to know," I shrugged "Anyways, you should apply as my Beta... who knows, you might get chosen,".
Surprise etched on her brows as she regarded me "Wait, you’re willing, like seriously willing to let me become your Beta if I pass?"
"Why not?" I gave her an amused smile "Do you think you’d not be able to cope or something?"
"Of course, I will. It’s just that..." she stuttered "I didn’t expect you’d be comfortable with the thought of your husband’s ex working closely with you and..." she shrugged as she trailed off.
I took one final sip of my tea, suddenly losing the appetite to eat the snacks. Everything about the woman in front of me irritated and I knew the longer I stayed, the more I wouldn’t be responsible for my actions. So, I rose to my feet with a cool smile playing on my lips.
"I shouldn’t fear you, Brooke," I told her quietly "I am not easy to scare because I’ve seen lot worse than you ever will and I have been able to stand tall since then. Besides, I am a single mother with baggage, if Noah wanted not to settle for me, it would have been easy and understandable but he chose me and even though that is almost not enough, you should also understand that Moon Whisper has the best and most beautiful ladies yet he stayed single all those years and finally settled for me,".
"It’s nothing to gloat about, Luna," she rose to her feet as she loomed over me. Thankfully, we were the same height so we were practically looking each other in the eye. "Noah is a man and perhaps you really were in search of someone who could father your children,".
I gave a small laugh, masking the malice that lodged in my heart as I stared at her "I won’t tread words with you, Brooke. I don’t need to fight to have Noah’s love because I am so sure of it and we should go back in, the table should be set by now,".
~~~
Dinner was a pretty stiff affair.
The features on Noah’s face were taut with anger as he was perched at the head of the table, eating silently. The girls thankfully were hungry so they had an appetite. I could see Brooke’s eyes darting all over the place, I could tell she wanted to talk to Noah who refused to look up from his plate.
He was the first to excuse himself and leave the dining room. The girls were next... they barely acknowledged Brooke’s presence and continued eating until they were done. Their Nannies took them to their rooms to prepare them for the night.
Now alone with Brooke, I could see her squirming in discomfort. I wanted to continue our conversation from before but I decided it wasn’t worth it.
"Miss Brooke, it’s so nice for you to share in our family’s warmth today,".
"No problem, Luna," she nodded stiffly and then rose to her feet "Dinner was superb. If you don’t mind, may I leave now?"
"Of course," I nodded smiling at her then watched with satisfaction as she scurried away.
Rather than going to the master suite which was the bedroom I shared with Noah, I decided to put the girls first to sleep. As I entered their room, they were already in their night gowns, their hair down; they looked so precious and, in that moment, I felt so grateful that they were mine.
"Hey darlings," I said quietly perching at the edge of Vina’s bed "How are you doing?’
"We’re not fine mom," Vina said immediately "We’re trying to put up a front and stay strong but I am tired of trying. I am tired of being that girl who everyone laughs at. It didn’t start today mom... it started way before you married Noah and it’s worse now,".
"I-I’m sorry," My voice caught in my throat "I know this is my fault and I’m going to fix it, I promise. Thankfully, the holidays would be here soon,".
"Can we go and visit dad?" Vina asked lowering her gaze "We’ll just spend a week and we’ll be back. We only want to change environment and give you and Noah time for yourselves,".
"W-Who told you that we don’t have time for ourselves?" My cheeks blushed with embarrassment.
"Don’t try to pretend mom, we know that you and Noah haven’t being the best of couples lately. He’s always working late and you’re them always hovering around us like a hawk. Assuming you were both so busy, I bet we would feel neglected. Only in this situation, we’re overwhelmed," Maeve said.
"I and Noah were going through some adult issues and now it’s fixed. Plus, he’s very busy at the moment. Running Moon Whisper is not an easy feat, darlings but we’re fine, I promise,".
"Still, can we go see dad?" they said in uniform.
My heart leapt with fear as I recalled how I had promised I would never keep them away from Xavier. We both had joint custody of them and he won’t be due visiting until another three weeks. I didn’t want them to leave my sight. A part of me couldn’t trust that Xavier would let them go once they arrive there.
"I’ll have to check with your dad first and this is me trying to inform you girls not to call him and tell him about the matter until I do. Okay?"
"Okay mom!" Maeve rolled her eyes.
"As for the situation at school, you won’t be going in tomorrow until there’s a clear plan on how to tackle the entire situation, so you can sleep in if you want,".
"Ohhhh!" they squealed as they looked at each other with delight, grinning. It was the first time since today I saw happy smiles on their faces. "Then can we catch up on our favourite show? Please...".
"Okay," I nodded "But just four episodes after that you must go to bed," I rose to my feet.
"You’re the best mom," the scurried out of their bedroom to their smalling living room. I stood there wondering if I was spoiling them a bit too much but just like me, they needed a break from everything and until we found a solution, I knew I was going to keep indulging till we resolved the entire situation.
After instructing their nannies, I left the room and headed for the master’s suite. As soon as I entered, I spotted Noah sitting at the edge of the king-sized bed, his head propped in his hands.
It wasn’t always a good sign if he was like that but I entered the room and closed the door quietly. He looked up, his eyes were cold.
"I want to talk to you, Selene... come here!"
