Chapter 57: The one who’s not family...

Selene POV

I left the tent and went straight to Noah who was sprawled in the makeshift hospital. His hands were thrown over his face careless and he seemed to be fast asleep. Quietly, I settled myself beside him, tucking a strand of hair behind his ear... he looked so peaceful as he slept.

A few hours ago, was chaotic and I knew that if I kept staying with Xavier, we would keep being in trouble. Yes, I didn’t love Noah... but these things take time, don’t they? I’ve loved only one man my entire life... so I wasn’t an expert in this field but I was willing to give love a chance with Noah.

I would love him... and cherish him, and let him mark me. This time, I wasn’t going to give in to the spoilt whims of the girls... They wouldn’t understand the sacrifices I was making for them until they were older.

As soon as Noah comes around, I’ll find a way to see that we’re driven to the airport. Whatever it is that we’re doing, we must leave this place today. I didn’t care if I was going to run or hop... I wasn’t going to spend another night here.

Exhaling, with determination glinting in my eyes, I tried to stand when Noah’s hand reached for me and he pulled me back in a flurry so I fell directly on his chest.

"That hurt," he winced with pain.

"I-I’m sorry," I said immediately and tried to leave but he tugged me closer to him so that I was just a tiny distance from meeting with his lips.

"You should pay for accidentally falling on a Lycan... what are you going to do about it?"

I knew what he wanted. The desire was so evident in his eyes... I decided to flirt back with him.

I relaxed against him, tracing my index finger from his neck, down to the base of his neck, with my gaze still fixed on him. I allowed my fingers to circle his chest, stopping briefly at his peeking nipple.

"What does the Lycan want? Tell me and I promise I will see that I do it without reservations. I promise,".

"You promise?" His gaze was fixed tenderly on me.

"My lord," I shook my head and lifted myself from his body, still allowing his iron grip on my wrist "I see you’re not confident to ask for anything. I should just leave...".

Pretending like I was leaving, Noah tugged at me again and this time harder. As I fell on his chest, our eyes met briefly before he captured my lips. Bile rose at the back of my throat at the sudden but expected intimacy but I fought hard to stay still.

We were going to be married... I must submit myself to him.

"This!" he said huskily, pulling away for just a second "Let me show you how much I want you... how much I need you, Selene... please!"

I didn’t say anything. I just gave him a sweet smile and watched as his gaze darkened as he reached for my lips again. His hands ran the length of my body. I heard his breath quicken as he groaned with pleasure.

Then, in the swiftness of a cat, he flipped me onto the bed and lay beside me, still running his hands all over my body.

"I hope, it’s just you under this ugly gown," he murmured as his eyes flashed with desperation.

"You’d have to find out yourself, sir," I said sweetly. As he bent to capture my lips...someone walked in.

"Your majesty, I’ve been..." The person paused and quickly, I scrambled to my feet, adjusting my clothes. When I looked up, the person in front of us was Xavier and behind him was Lucius.

I gasped slightly as guilt entered my eyes, seeing Xavier. "I’ll allow you to talk," I murmured to Noah before giving them a stiff smile as I scurried out of the room. As soon as I left, I sighed with relief and held on to my chest, trying to still my pounding heart.

I need to stop feeling guilty about Noah... I and Xavier no longer had ties. Unconsciously, I reached for his mark on my neck... wondering silently, how long it would take before it disappeared. It was strange that even after rejecting him... his mark was still on my neck. Did it mean that the rejection didn’t work?

I decided to go check on the girls when their high-pitched laughter reached me. Turning to the direction where it was coming from, I spotted them huddled with Alpha Kurtis, laughing their heads off on something he was showing them on his phone.

I crossed to where they were in quick strides and cleared my throat to announce my presence as I drew nearer. Kurtis looked up, and in those brief moments, I saw that the gaze in his eyes had gone from cold to cheerful. He also had a huge grin on his face... the kind you’d have when you’re with a loved one.

Instantly, it grew cold and he closed his phone and said "Children, your mom is here," he announced. The girls looked up, immediately they spotted me, they ran over with excitement on their faces.

"Mommy, did you know that he used to be Daddy’s friend? He just showed us a lot of embarrassing videos and pictures about daddy when he was young," Maeve said.

"Is that so?" I feigned surprise "Good thing I have a phone with me, what if I collect all the videos from him, so you can watch them anytime you want?"

"That will be cool, Mom," Vina shrieked clapping her hands excitedly.

"Good!" then will you both be a darling and excuse I and Alpha Kurtis... we have a lot of good things to talk about and then see if he’ll give me the videos,".

"Okay Mom!" they said in unison and then ran back to where Kurtis was as they clasped him in a hug. "Thank you so much, Alpha," they said.

"Oh!" Awkwardness settled on Kurtis’s face but he accepted the hug with another lopsided smile.

We watched as the girls scurried away, discussing excitedly the videos he had just shown them. As they left, a sad smile settled on my face "I can’t believe they’ve bounced back after what happened today. I was so worried that the experience would traumatize them but it seems I’m wrong,".

"They seem to be doing okay to me," Kurtis shrugged "And you have such adorable children... If I were Xavier, I would never let you give them to another man. Then again, I know the kind of person he is...I’m sure he’s not going to give up on you and the kids,".

"You sound so confident and cocky," I scoffed "It seems you do not know who your friend is, especially now. You think Xavier now is that same gangly, teenage boy you used to know?"

"People don’t change much, Selene," A cold sneer settled on his lips "And are you trying to leave Xavier because he’s not good in bed and you think his uncle will be better?"

A blush settled on my cheeks at the rawness of his words.

"It’s none of your business, Alpha," I said coldly "The divorce was done peacefully and as we said earlier, it was a mutual decision,".

"Okay!" he shrugged "Suit yourself. By the way, Xavier texted me a few seconds ago that you’re requesting for escorts to the airport with Noah?"

"Yes," I nodded "it’s getting more and more dangerous by the day and it worries me so much. I think leaving is best for now. Whenever the coast is clear then we would come back or something,".

"Okay," he nodded "I’ll give instructions to my men and you should be out of here in the next two hours.

"By the way, are you truly not going to partner with Xavier unless he rejects the moon goddess?"

"Yes," he affirmed "And Xavier will thank me much more later when he begins to enjoy the ease that comes with being your god,".

"It’s not always as easy as it sounds and I don’t know what personal vendetta you have against the moon goddess but I promised myself I wouldn’t interfere and I won’t,".

"Good choice," he chuckled "By the way, the girls tell me it’s their birthdays today... I know it’s not in my place but do you have any plans for them?"

"No," I shook my head... "With everything that’s going on, we’ll just have to wait until we are back at Moon Whisper. Then we’ll hold a proper celebration,".

"I see," he nodded and scratched his head "Would you mind if I throw a little something here? To say the truth, all my men are obsessed with girls..." As if to buttress his point, he pointed in the direction of one of the soldiers currently piggybacking Maeve who was screaming with delight. While Vina was practising fighting with another soldier with wooden weapons. The soldier also lowered himself to her height.

"My children have such effect on people," I said simply.

"But celebrating their birthdays here would liven the whole place and it’ll be a change from the dark, gloominess we’re used to,".

"Fine," I rolled my eyes "Keep it simple," I said and turned on my heels.

I hadn’t walked more than two steps when Kurtis’s words reached me.

"By the way, did Noah tell you how he got injured?"

"No!" I shook my head, turning back to face him "He’s been close-mouthed about it,".

"He was trying to save Xavier," Kurtis said quietly "A word of advice, Selene...Maybe you should rethink your choices because at the end of the day... you’re the one who’s not family,".
