Chapter 138: She was trying to protect you... from getting hurt

Selene POV

I was having a sweet dream... you know the kind where the feeling is out of this world and almost real that you could almost feel it in the physical when the soft rap at my door lulled me from the dream world into reality. Blinking groggily, I stretched like a cat, loving the way my bones cracked... they were all resetting from the run I had last night.

It had been Xavier’s idea and I was so glad I did. My wolf, Bea has since matured and become even more stronger than the last time I transformed. Since Xavier couldn’t run with me, he stayed and waited until I had run to my heart’s contention but it did me a lot of good. Connecting with nature in my wolf form was an underrated healing. All my senses were activated... the leaves smelt differently; the night air soothed my troubled heart... but by the time I changed back to my human form... I was so tired.

It was Xavier who aided me home. The knock came again, so I assumed it was one of the maids coming to draw the curtains and tidy my room. "Come in," I called out, my voice still husky with sleep.

Instead of dainty, small steps which is common to most of the maids since they were Omegas, I heard the footsteps of someone striding purposefully towards me. cracking my eyes a bit, I arched a brow in surprise as I saw Noah coming towards my bedside, his expression unreadable. I felt my breath catch in my throat as the ray from the morning sun, captured one part of his face, giving him a dangerous yet attractive look. Instinctively, I pulled the bed covers over my chest. My nightgown was revealing... in this state, he could pounce on me.

"Noah?" I called out "What are you doing here? I wasn’t expecting to see you in my room so early this morning. Did something happen? Are you unwell?"

He stopped at the foot of the bed, his eyes straying first to the bed covers I held firmly in my hands before they met with my eyes. He seemed to chide himself for staring. I watched as he gathered himself, clasping his hands behind his back as he regarded me coolly. "I wanted to know what you intend to do,".

I cocked my head in confusion as I regarded him "About what?"

"Please, Selene! Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about," he stated flatly shifting his feet impatiently "You haven’t said a single word to me about... Brooke. About what transpired between us. I need to know your next line of action and prepare myself for it also,".

"Oh!" my lips rounded in surprise as understanding dawned on me followed quickly by an odd sense of clarity. Of course, I knew he expected me to rail at him over his infidelity or make a scene out of it. Yesterday, I had simply walked out of the room asking for air. I didn’t even have the energy to hurl bitter words at him. I wanted to laugh at how his worry revealed his guilt.

Yesterday I was hurt... even right now thinking about it caused a dull ache in my chest but the moon will fly before I’ll let him know that he hurt me. Instead, I shrugged one single strap shoulder in a deliberately nonchalant motion.

"I don’t intend to do anything, Noah. I am not going to leave our marriage, if that’s what you’re afraid of," I announced holding his gaze steadily "And I can’t order you to stop sleeping with Brooke either... that’s a decision only you can make for yourself and whatever it is, I promise you, I won’t bat an eyelid. I’ll pretend that I don’t know...,".

His expression slipped for a moment and I saw confusion in his eyes. "You’re ... not upset? Are you not going to try to make me end things with her at least? Or give me some sort of ultimatum?"

I shook my head slowly, giving him a bright smile "We did agree to start seeing the therapist that flew in yesterday. She’s here now, so I’m willing to make that effort and try to see if we could fix our marriage. To say the trust, I want this to work, Noah and I hope you feel the same way. I am not trying to justify cheating but at least you weren’t as abusive as Xavier,".

I watched as his features flickered into realization and resisted the urge to smirk. Just as I’d anticipated, my surprisingly calm acceptance of his indiscretions was putting him more ill at ease than any heated accusations would have.

Finally, he lets out a frustrated sigh, dragging a hand through his tousled hair "I don’t understand you, Selene. I wish you’d just...get angry. Fly into a rage, try to make me jealous, punish me, give me the silent treatment, cry or accuse me of being wicked... anything! Anything except this odd acceptance,".

This time, I couldn’t hold it in, I laughed. A bright, genuine peal that seemed to confuse Noah even more. Tutting at him almost playfully, I replied. "I’m afraid, Noah... I’m just too busy for that kind of emotional trauma to pass myself through. My anger won’t change the past or undo what’s already happened between you and Brooke,".

Continuing, I waved a hand "I want our marriage to work, Noah. That’s my only priority right now. You can rest easy on that front, okay?"

He continued staring at me wordlessly, so I decided to press my advantage. "Speaking of priorities, have you brought up reinstating the Office of the Luna to the Pack Elders and Council yet?"

His brows lowered into a fierce scowl "I haven’t had the chance to bring it up to them. Everything had happened at once these past few days and with the tribunal that is being set up to investigate Conrad’s death, there’s a high chance that they may not want to look into something else again but you could resume your duties and I’ll look for a way to convince them to agree to it plus for it to be effective and easier, you need a beta,".

"You choose Brooke, right? I can work with her no worries," I chimed in breezily. Seeing that he was looking at me with surprise, I decided to explain "I’d like to start my duties as soon as possible, and I wouldn’t want to waste any more time trying to look for another Beta, so I’ll just go for the one available and you don’t have to worry, I’m sure we’ll get along just fine,".

He nodded his head but I knew he was uncomfortable but didn’t say anything. But I didn’t care, one of the advantages of being with a cheating partner is making ridiculous demands and watching them fulfil it. At this point, I knew that even if I asked for the moon, he would try to bring it for me.

Silence reigned between us, as we both slipped into a contemplative mood. After a while, I faced him again, with a smile on my face "You mentioned something about the tribunal and Conrad’s case... I was so distraught yesterday that I forgot to ask," I paused to let that sink in revelling in the way he lowered his gaze "I thought as Brooke saved your life by killing Conrad that it would end there. Why do they need to investigate his death?"

"Because it’s against our laws to shed the blood of a fellow Lycan," he replied. "Your reasons must be strong enough though if you must and even then, it will be investigated to determine that but for Brooke, she might be punished because Conrad didn’t strike first in a way. I had no bruises, no wounds... he just picked up a gun... they might argue that he wasn’t going to shoot and she shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions or something like that but I’m hoping the kings would testify in her favour, else..." he frowned "She could be killed,".

"What!" my eyes widened with surprise "That’s way too cruel. What if Conrad had shot at you as planned and you died or something? She was trying to protect you... from getting hurt,".

"If the shot had been fired by me... it would be a different case. I could plead self-defense but I can’t do that anymore and maybe she might also be accused of doing it for her gains. Usually, they call a few members of the pack to testify either for or against the person and I know they’ll request some members of the pack in Brooke’s case, let’s just hope that they speak well of her. Their testimonies could change her sentence,".

"I see!" I nodded with a smile "I sincerely wish it works out in the end. It’ll be so bad that after making such a great sacrifice for you she dies. Don’t worry, everything will work out in the end. Just let me know when we’re scheduled to go see the therapist and I’ll make myself available," I said dismissively hoping he would leave but he still stood there.

After a while, our gaze met and held again "Last night, Lucius, Xavier’s Beta came to me and told me about what happened while you were away and also about Xavier still needing to replenish his energy saying you refused to help him insisting you must get permission from me,".

"Yes," I nodded "If you agree I’ll do it and if you don’t, then..." I shrugged "Xavier would just have to look for a solution elsewhere,".

"Well... it’ll be hypocritical for me at this point to keep refusing," he sighed "Since it’s just to lie down beside him, you can do it!"
