Chapter 130: The fate of the dark moon cannot be broken...
Kurtis POV
I and Lucius were alike in so many ways except he was a die-hard loyalist.
Anyone who will not think twice before risking their life for someone is the most extreme person I’ve ever met. Ordinarily, I knew the Beta bond is as strong as the mate’s bond but not to the extent where you lose every reasoning. Lucius hated me because he felt I was selfish. He didn’t have to tell me, it shows in everything he does, in the way he ignores me whenever I’m around Xavier.
He’s not the kind of person to interfere in people’s business with or without evidence. His conservative nature would rather solve things himself than involve people and I knew he hated my guts. After Selene had gone with the stranger whom she kept calling Kragen, we were left alone. I took a deep sigh and gave him a small smile when our gaze met.
"I know you hate my guts, Lucius and it’s understandable but if things must work now, someone but be in charge. Take the reins and do the guiding. I don’t want us clashing over things that we should do or decision so...".
"You’re so full of yourself, Kurtis," he stopped me mid-sentence "I know you don’t know so much about me except for the fact that you know I hate you which is true. I’ve never attempted to like you, you know but you should know I don’t waste my energy on a lot of things. So, I am not obsessing over hating you. All I want is for us to do the right thing, save the kings and we’ll be done. If you make a decision that doesn’t make sense or will not be favourable, I won’t do it. So, you be careful in making those decisions,".
I scoffed as I stared at him with a ready reply on the tips of my tongue but I decided against it. No matter what words I choose to use on him, it won’t affect him in any way. People like Lucius decide what they want to hear and what they don’t want to.
"Fair enough!" I nodded "Now, do you think we should go with Selene’s friends’ counsel or do something else?"
His eyes flickered the rest of my body with disdain, when he was done, he shook his head and rolled his eyes. "If there’s a way to get Conrad’s image or picture, I came with some foxes who have been under our custody for the longest time and I’ll have them take up Conrad’s image to approach the mercenary head and make a deal with them. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it,".
Without waiting for my approval, he turned and left. I gritted my teeth in annoyance as he walked away. Annoying bastard! After he left, it took me a minute to calm myself as soon as I felt calm enough, I paged my soldiers that I had dispatched to the pack house. If Conrad wanted to seize the packs and maybe the people, he would not waste precious time catching all the kings. Laying siege against the people was only a distraction.
If all the soldiers left the pack house to the villages, it would mean that Conrad would have the upper hand and would do as he pleases. But if he had some sort of pressure from soldiers at the pack house, it would make him annoyed and probably fight with the head of the mercenary soldier that had gone into the hall with him. It’ll be our chance to infiltrate the hall, get the head of the soldier and make our offer.
"Any eyes on the mercenary soldiers? Can you tell me what is being done to the people?"
"Nothing so far," one of my soldiers replied "They’re just gathering them together and are spreading false smoke all over the place. Except for those who try to struggle to be apprehended, the soldiers are doing nothing,".
Just as I suspected. If my instincts were correct, then the people are the bait. The main targets were the Kings and Conrad knew that every Lycan King
"Listen up guys!" I said into the microphone "I want you all to divide yourself into four equal parts. Then three of those parts should head back to the pack house and form an attacking position. This won’t be easy guys as we’re yet to ascertain the strength of these mercenaries but as you know, you have all been trained to fight even when you know nothing about your enemy,".
"Yes Alpha!" they replied in unison.
"When you arrive at the pack house, I want you to fight the mercenary soldiers set around the pack house. First, take off their snipers discreetly. I do not want any lives lost in the process. Just make them unconscious, long enough for us to finish up with the mission. The goal is to lure their chief head out of the hall and someplace far from the hall. From then, Beta Lucius will give you further instructions,".
"Yes, Alpha!" they all chorused.
I ended the communication line and gazed into the distance wondering if our plans would work. My mind flitted momentarily to Selene and Xavier who had gone with that stranger. The way he spoke and the things he said sounded strange. It was as if he knew what would happen. Selene may look harmless but I know she’d never go with someone who poses as a potential threat to her and her children.
Shaking my head, I decided to page, Lucius.
"Yes!" he said flatly a second later "I’ve given my men instructions to try to lure the mercenary head out of the hall. Maybe you can help us by asking one of the foxes to change to one of his soldiers and report distress or something like that. When we lure him into the forest, One of the foxes...".
"They know what to do!" he cut me short "Thank you for the heads up," he said and disconnected the line.
I stared at the dead communication line disconnect and anger surged through every part of my body as I stared at it. Lucius was outrightly disrespecting me... he wasn’t even trying to pretend about it and it ached me so much that I feel powerless.
"Are you alright?" someone said behind me making me turn around immediately, hands on my weapons. I removed them immediately as soon as I turned and saw it was Selene’s friend, Kragen. "Don’t worry, Kurtis," he came closer to me, slipping his hands into his pockets "Everything will work out and don’t hate Lucius too much, he’s just going through a phase,".
I arched a brow, and set back my weapon, putting as much space as I could between us "How are Selene and the girls? Where did you take them to?" I asked in a bid to change the topic.
"Somewhere safe!" he fished out a tracker from his pocket and tossed it to me "When all of this is over you can bring her back yourself. I won’t be around though, so I am entrusting it to you. By the way..." he turned to me with a bright smile on his face "What do you think about Lucius? Does he get on your nerves?"
"Why are you asking suddenly asking me that? Besides, why are we speaking casually to each other, do I know you? Have we met before?" I asked.
"I know you, Kurtis!" he huffed and turned away to stare at the trees "Young, determined Kurtis who bears a grudge against his father and wants to change century-old laws. Listen, you should know that every good thing comes with a price and maybe a costly sacrifice. You should also be wary of Selene... in the end, she’d only do what would benefit her and her children,".
I paused and turned to him staring at him suspiciously "Isn’t Selene your friend? Why are you trying to make her a bad person?"
"I am not making her a bad person, I am only saying the truth," he shrugged "Lucius loves Selene so much and because of his loyalty to Xavier, he can endure him having her as mate and not another man. I know you love her too but it’s best you keep your feelings hidden else he’ll kill you," he said.
"Lucius? Kill me?" I scoffed "You’ve got to be kidding me. Didn’t Selene tell you a little about the kind of person I am? I call the shots on everything. I am a professional killer... like I’ve had about a thousand kills without any mishaps. I can take on Lucius any time any day,".
"No one is stronger than a man who has a lot to protect, Kurtis," Kragen sighed "You’ve underestimated Lucius and that is so bad. He single-handedly protected Xavier when he was sick and secured his pack... don’t you think you should be wary of him? To Lucius, killing when it’s necessary is not in his books. He’ll kill anyone who tries to hurt the people he loves. So, you be careful,".
I stared at Kragen’s profile as he looked into the distance trying to make sense out of everything he just said. "How do you know all these things? Did Selene tell you all of these? Are you sure about Lucius? He’ll do anything for Xavier of course and that includes protecting his mate and not all of the things you’ve said,".
"If you want to try it, after this is over try to act like you’re worried about Selene and later on, he’ll ask you what you think about her," Kragen turned and shook his head "I wish I can change the future sometimes but I cannot. Certain paths cannot be erased. So, it doesn’t matter that you’ll abolish the religion of the moon and teach the people to rely on themselves... to escape one’s fate one must pass it on to another. That’s the only way else... it becomes a circle of events that changes nothing,".
A chill ran down my spine as I stared at him. "W-what are you talking about?"
"Do not get in Lucius way, Kurtis. It is his fate and Noah’s. The fate of the dark moon cannot be broken... so people who try to get in the way of it will meet their end and that is what Lucius is there for. Until Xavier and Selene are together, a lot of things will not be corrected. The future is bleak, Kurtis... so be on guard. Anyways!" he said cheerfully "I came to fetch the girl’s nanny to help Selene, see you much later,".
