Chapter 117: But hurting him by marrying his uncle...
Selene POV
"Lucius!" I screamed in my heart relaxing visibly as our gaze met each other. The last time I saw him was at the hotel after he came to save me. Since then, I’ve either been too busy to ask about him or I didn’t even remember he was here. Lucius was my best friend; he was the one who got me through the seven years I was married to Xavier. He was the reason why a portion of my mental health was preserved.
So, seeing him like this brought back fond memories. There was a time when I was so close to Lucius that the maids used to gossip that I was cheating with him behind Xavier’s back. But it was all lying of course. For one, Lucius was a stickler for doing the right thing and he was a die-hard loyalist. Although he came from a lineage of Betas, I can doubtlessly say that Lucius would still maintain the same level of loyalty he had now even if he was a mere Omega.
He raised a finger to his lips, in a shushing gesture before releasing me.
"Lucius," I exhaled, pressing a hand to my heart that was still pounding with fright. "You startled me," I queried. "What are you doing here?"
His eyes darted to the closed door and then back at me. without replying, he reached for my hand and pulled me towards the stairs. I allowed him to direct me and soon we were walking side by side in the garden, without saying a word to each other. The silence was so comfortable and peaceful that I didn’t want to end but I know it was more than that. Being with Lucius always had a way of putting me in the best of moods. It didn’t matter how angry I was, just his tenderness was enough to placate me.
When we got to one of the garden benches, he stopped and his gaze hovered over me for a moment before they rested on my face. There was a perplexed look in his eyes making it difficult for me to read his expression. Then. Slowly, the corners of his eyes crinkled in an almost smile of apology.
"I was coming to find you," he said finally. "Xavier wanted to see me and since I was coming to this side of the pack house, I decided to pop in and say hi to you. It’s been a while, Luna,".
"Like, a long while!" I sighed and cocked my head curiously at him "Of course, It feels like I hardly see you around these days. For a moment, I thought you had gone back to Greyhound and I keep forgetting to ask Xavier of you. It’s been chaotic for a while now and I’ve been meaning to thank you for that other day. I never had the chance to thank you properly but..." I paused inhaling and exhaling sharply "If you hadn’t shown up at that point and caused that distraction, I know things would have escalated. So, I’m super grateful,".
He simply dipped his head in acknowledgement "I would do it over and over again, Selene," he said quietly giving me a small, wistful smile "Unlike your husband or Noah, I would never let you take on that kind of risk again. If they want clarification on a particular matter, it’s one of the easiest things to do. Asking you to go into the Lion’s den was so uncalled for,".
"I know," I nodded and unable to stop myself, I leaned against him for a hug, rounding my hands around his frame. I felt him stiffen for a moment before he relaxed and tentatively placed his hand around me. A small smile settled on my lips as he hugged me back. We stayed like that for a few minutes before I slowly and reluctantly left his hands. Our gaze met again and I sighed.
"This is like the first time that we’ve ever hugged since I knew you," I chuckled at the way his brows arched with surprise "It’s wild and seems like an exaggeration but this is technically the first time we’ve hugged each other and I’m thrilled,".
"Right!" a small smile spread over his lips "I’m glad you did,".
"Anyways, what were you doing in front of Kurtis’s office? I was going to talk to Xavier and Kurtis about something but I heard them talking about me so I got curious and wanted to hear the rest of it. How about you?"
"I was going to meet Xavier. He called for me and I didn’t mean to stop you like that, It’s just that, you looked so good, leaning against the wall, straining to pick up everything they were saying. I thought it was funny but also, they could be watching you from inside. These days, there are a ton of inventions and I know Kurtis is so good at camouflaging anything into a surveillance device,".
"Yeah!" I nodded "I wasn’t doing anything wrong though,". Turning to assess him, I noticed how tired his eyes were and how there were tired lines on his forehead too. Since I knew Lucius, I know he had zero communication skills. It didn’t matter how close you were to him. He would never let you know how he feels about anything. He would stay closemouthed just because he doesn’t ever want to be a burden to anyone. That’s how I’ve heard he’s always been since he was a child.
I know these few days here at Moon Whisper, Xavier has been busy and so has Lucius. They were like two peas in a pod and no matter what it was, they were inseparable. Wait! What if I told him about the dream and he related it to Xavier? Xavier would listen to him more and maybe believe him but if he doesn’t then it’ll no longer be my fault.
As I sat there contemplating whether I should tell him, his voice reached me.
"Spill it, Selene. I can tell something is bothering you. C’mon, spill already and you don’t have to ever worry, your secret is safe with me,".
"Fine," I nodded and inhaled deeply. "I had...a dream, recently. It was about Xavier," I glanced over at Lucius watching me quietly and not reacting as it was his manner. "I wanted to tell Xavier myself but I haven’t had the time to be with him alone but you could tell him. I know he would listen to you more and take it more seriously if you told him yourself,".
"Okay!" he nodded "What was the dream about?"
"In the dream, it was like he was missing and I was desperately searching for him," My voice dropped into a troubled murmur "Moon Whisper was in ruins. People were running around the place but I saw Noah, the girls were with me but there was no sign of Xavier,". Reaching out, I placed a hand on his arm, my eyes pleading. "Please, take care of him. Xavier is reckless and I wonder how he’s been able to make it alive until now but I know it’s due to you,".
Lucius patted my hand reassuringly. "Don’t worry about that, Xavier had already envisioned this battle for a long time, so we are prepared. You cannot imagine how much preparations that we’ve made. Whatever they’re bringing against us, we’re ready to go up against them,".
"Really? What preparations are you talking about? I know Kurtis mentioned something about having soldiers in place, but I’m curious honestly because if what I hear about Wild Hunt pack is true then...".
"You don’t have to worry about it, Selene," he interrupted me rising to his feet "Don’t worry about it at all. We’ll take care of it. Now I have to go back to Xavier before he starts looking for me,".
"Okay," I nodded and sighed in relief. "Do you still have reservations about Kurtis? I know there was a time you mentioned that you don’t feel easy about him,".
"Yeah," he nodded "And it didn’t change. Kurtis is taking advantage of every one of us to achieve whatever plans he has. That’s one of the reasons why he aligned with Xavier suddenly. I know men like him always want to stay neutral. He could have chosen the other Alphas, so why did he suddenly choose Xavier?"
I blinked in surprise at his detailed explanation. "You think so? Like What?"
But he merely shrugged changing the subject. "Are you happy in your marriage to Lycan Noah?"
That threw me off balance. "Oh yes, of course!" I said with a bright smile that I hoped was convincing. How could I explain that my relationship with Noah had become so strained lately?
Lucius scoffed as his eyes bore into me. "You seem...miserable, Selene," he stated bluntly. "More so than when you were with Xavier,".
I opened my mouth to reply to him but no words would come out. Just as he turned to go, I blurted. "Would you have been alright with me staying with Xavier? Even after the way he..." I trailed off, unable to speak about those painful memories.
"You’re making excuses for why you left him for Noah," his gaze settled on me intently" Dee down, you know Xavier is a changed person. He would have made a good husband and father, if you’d given him the chance," his tone softened with a hint of sympathy before he continued "Instead, you choose the path of vengeance. But hurting him by marrying his uncle won’t bring you peace in the end,".
