Chapter 110: Coming back to life...
Selene POV
As soon as Kragen heard footsteps, he gave me one last hard look before he disappeared into the shadows. My heart was still pounding frantically when I stared at Kurtis’s still form on the bed. Immediately, the door burst open and Xavier rushed in, a maid on his heels carrying a bowl of water and towels accompanied by the Pack doctor and his nurses.
"What took you so long?" I barked as soon as I saw them. I picked myself up from where I was standing at the other side of the room talking to Kragen and walked towards them. Without waiting for a reply, I turned to the maid "Keep damping him with the cold towel, let’s try to bring his temperature down a bit," I instructed.
"I came with the pack doctor," Xavier said pushing the doctor forward "Let him examine him at least to know what’s wrong,".
I didn’t say anything. I just nodded as a wave of relief flooded through my heart. At least before I come back, they would know what to do. So, I dashed out of the room, brushing past them as I started towards the pack kitchen.
"Selene!" Xavier’s voice rang behind me. But I ignored him and continued walking briskly. I had barely gone 100 steps, when Xavier grabbed my hand from behind and jerked me towards him, forcing me to look at him. "Where are you running off to in such a hurry? Is something wrong? Are you alright?" he asked.
"Not now, Xavier," I shrugged out of his grip "I need to go get something from the kitchen that would help, Kurtis. Just go back and stay with the doctor," I couldn’t deal with questions right now. I needed to act. Besides, how am I supposed to explain what happened a few minutes ago?
Without waiting for him again, I hurried down the hall, ignoring his calls for me to be careful. I weaved through servants and pack staff until I arrived at the pack kitchen. Unlike any other day, the entire place was bustling with activity and hot too. Sounds of chopping, scraping, and cooking, could be heard.
"Persimmons!" I demanded urgently as soon as I barged through the door, making the staff jump. "And a mortar and pestle!" I added trying to catch my breath as I crouched down supporting myself with my knee.
Immediately, the Chief cook rushed towards me "Your majesty, we didn’t expect you to be here," he said politely. "If there’s something you want us to do, just tell us and we’ll have it done for you and delivered as soon as possible. As you can see, His Majesty and Alpha Xavier have ordered us to cater for our guests coming in today and we’re trying to meet up!"
From where I was crouched still trying to catch my breath, I raised my gaze and stared at him "Why are you telling me all of that? I only asked for a persimmon and a mortar and pestle...or have you suddenly gone deaf,".
"Of course not, Luna!" he chuckled coldly "I am just saying that I won’t be able to release any of the kitchen staff right now, Luna and...".
"Is that what I asked for?" I yelled glaring at him "I came here and I asked for just two things. Now, don’t make me lose my cool and get me the things I asked for right now, or else I will have you punished because you’re being disrespectful. Between me and the guests, who is more important?" I stressed moving closer to him.
"Y-You, Luna!" he stammered moving backwards "I’m sorry,".
I exhaled and stopped moving "Just bring what I asked for,". He nodded and scurried away. A few seconds later, he returned and placed the items before me. Snatching them from his hand, I dumped them on the kitchen island, reached for the persimmons which I dropped into the mortar and started pounding them furiously until I had them into a fine powder.
"Get me a cup!" I instructed raising my hand and in one second a cup was shoved into it. I poured some water from the tap into it and turned the power inside then stirred making a thick orange liquid.
Without wasting another second, I turned and raced back towards Kurtis’s office, holding the cup precariously. When I arrived, I burst through the door and was met with the grim expression of the doctor examining Kurtis. He had a puzzled look on his face as he looked up.
"I still cannot find a pulse," he murmured, shaking his head slowly. "This is strange... the strangest thing I have seen. He’s alive no doubt since there’s air passing through his nostrils but I cannot find a pulse or even his vein and we need to so I can give him a shot to bring his temperature down, it’s too high,".
I stared at all of them and rolled my eyes. How couldn’t the doctor tell at first glass that he was showing signs of being poisoned? Anyway, I didn’t have time for their confusion and inaction. Pushing past them all, I went straight to Kurtis’s side and struggled to pull him into a sitting position.
"What are you doing?" Xavier asked giving me a strange look "What’s that you have in a cup?"
"Are you going to keep staring at me or give me a hand here?" I snapped.
Immediately, he drew closer and together, we managed to get him into an upright position. Cradling his head against my shoulder, I brought the persimmon concoction to his lips. "Drink this," I muttered fiercely.
His mouth was firmly shut and I didn’t want to waste a drop of the persimmon. So, I dropped it on the ground and repositioned his head, so I was cradling him in the crook of my elbows. As I raised the cup again to his lips, the doctor placed his arm on mine, trying to stop me.
"Your Majesty, I don’t think that’s a good idea. Persimmon has been found to slow down the heart rate of Werewolves, coat their blood and ultimately stop it from flowing to the heart. So, I don’t think it’s a wise decision to feed him that?"
"Okay," I nodded "So, what do you think we should do then? Please tell me?"
"Well..." he stuttered "We’ll take a sample of his fluids back to the lab and run some tests to see what’s wrong with him,".
"By then he would be dead. Are you kidding me right now, doctor? You see how high his temperature is and you think if it continues for the next ten minutes will things not get worse? He might go into a convulsion and in worse-case scenarios be paralyzed. You do not or cannot even tell what’s happening to him and yet you want to play doctor now that I might have a solution,".
"I apologize, your majesty," he bowed his head "I wasn’t trying to play doctor I was just trying to...".
"I will only listen to you if you have a solution or know what can be done right now. So, please don’t try to stop me again,".
"Maybe we should listen to the doctor?" Xavier sighed.
I flashed him a death glare and he instantly stopped talking. Ignoring them, I brought the cup to Kurtis’s lips again "You have to drink it, Kurtis! Please!" I pleaded forcing the edge of the cup in between his lips.
Slowly, I poured the liquid into his mouth, massaging his throat to make him swallow. The cup was soon drained of the thick liquid and I slowly eased him back onto the makeshift pillows on my legs. I watched him, hoping that any minute now, he would open his eyes but the minutes ticked by and there was no sign that he was going to regain consciousness.
After about five minutes, the doctor drew close and examined him. His eyes widened as he stared at me with shock. "What’s wrong?" I asked.
"He’s cold!" he muttered reaching out to touch his forehead and then taking his hand back as if something struck him. Copying his movement, I placed the back of my hand on his forehead and removed it immediately. It was icy cold. Panic seized my heart immediately when I noticed his hands were turning purple.
"What’s happening?" I asked staring at him "Why is he having this sort of reaction? This is not supposed to be. It was supposed to work?" I rambled rubbing his icy hands between my palms as I tried to give him warmth.
His lips had turned into a frozen ash color and his skin was fast becoming shallow.
"I warned you Your Majesty," the doctor cried
"This is no time to cry over spilt milk," Xavier barked "Get blankets at once,". The maid with us hurried out and returned a minute later with blankets. We draped it over his body while I was still rubbing his hands, to improve the circulation of blood.
Then, just as I was losing hope – his colour began to return and his body started warming up. Beads of sweat formed on his brows and we had to remove the blankets. Suddenly, his eyelashes fluttered and his fingers twitched. He was coming back to life.
I exhaled with relief and held onto him, squeezing his hand tightly as his colour completely returned. A moment later, he opened his eyes. He looked dazed but they were filled with life once more. He was going to be okay.
