Sweet Vengeances
Chapter 31: The Calm Before the Storm

Chapter 31: Chapter 31: The Calm Before the Storm

As the crew moved forward into the center of The Fortress, there was a lot of anxiety in the air. Their breaths were held in expectation as they crept like shadows, their footfall silent against the chilly concrete floors. With each turn and door they went through, they got closer to the guy they were looking for—Kane.

Lily felt her heart thumping in her chest. Everything felt different now that they were here, even though she had always thought that this moment would be filled with hate and anger. A chilly resolve appeared to take the place of the rage that had propelled her actions. Her need for vengeance had changed. She stood on the precipice of something more significant that had the potential to permanently alter her life’s trajectory.

At her side, Ethan’s motions were natural and instinctual, his eyes continually sweeping the corridors. Despite the seriousness of the assignment, he appeared to be the most composed of them all. That was why she admired him.

"Are you okay?" he said in a hushed but worried voice.

Lily gave him a strained smile and nodded. "I’m all right. Let’s just finish this up.

Something inscrutable flickered across his eyes as he continued to stare at her. "Remain near. We have no idea what is ahead for us.

The same warning that had been present in his voice ever since they had entered The Fortress was audible to her. It was uncertain what kind of havoc they would cause because they were entering a hornet’s nest.

The corridors seemed to go on forever. Even though they had only been walking for minutes, it felt like they had been for hours. With the occasional distant roar or metallic clank, the gentle hum of equipment reverberated through the walls. Lily was reminded of how completely destroyed this area was by the sound, which made her skin crawl.

At last they came to two big steel doors. Marcus looked at Ethan, who indicated that they were near their target by nodding.

Marcus whispered softly and steadily, "This is it." "Remember that we follow the plan. No errors, in and out.

Nerves made Lily’s stomach turn, but she forced it down. Now there was no going back. She had risked too much and gone too far to turn back now.

Ethan steadied his hand and grabbed for the door handle. Before opening the door, he gave the group one more look.

The only source of light in the pitch-black room was a single, flickering lightbulb in the middle of it. Lily’s senses were instantly sharpened by the strong odor of dust and machinery in the air. Where was Kane now that they had reached the center of The Fortress?

Suddenly there was a sound coming from behind a pile of boxes. The sound of someone moving, something changing. Lily’s heartbeat accelerated. They weren’t by themselves.

The room descended into mayhem before anyone could respond. Dark-clad men sprang out of the darkness, their weapons out and pointed straight at them.

"Go down!" The first shots rang out, and they all ducked for cover as Marcus shouted.

Lily knelt behind a metal beam, her hands shaking, her pulse pounding. Everything else was drowned out by the sound of gunfire. The walls seemed to be closing in on her as she struggled to control her breathing. This was the point at which everything could go wrong.

With his training taking effect, Ethan was the first to move. He leaped to the side, hiding behind a pile of crates and firing back with accuracy. Monica and Marcus followed closely, each assuming their positions with familiar ease.

Lily’s thoughts were racing as she watched them. The plan was straightforward: locate Kane, obtain the information, and depart. However, it had now descended into a full-fledged battle. It never occurred to her that her desire for vengeance would turn into a struggle for her life.

She cast a peek in the direction of the far end of the room, where she could barely see a man’s shadow standing close to a desk. His eyes gleamed with venom as he watched them.

Kane.

Their eyes met, and her heartbeat accelerated. She was pushed into this terrible life by this man, who had ruined her entire world. The man who had destroyed her marriage and violated her trust. He was standing there now, seemingly untouchable.

Lily was startled out of her reverie by a volley of gunshots that ripped through the atmosphere. As the bullets bounced off the surrounding walls, she immediately ducked, tensing her body. She had to concentrate.

Lily inhaled deeply before moving. Despite the fact that she lacked a weapon and battle experience, she had no intention of waiting to be eliminated. She sprang out of her hiding place and walked quickly and stealthily straight to the desk where Kane was standing.

As she approached, her mind focused solely on making him pay, her heart thumping in her chest.

She yelled, "Kane!" high enough to be heard above the commotion.

When he spotted her coming, the man turned, a slow, sarcastic smirk developing across his face. "Well, well. Unless it’s Lily Harper. How charming.

Lily’s hands at her sides curled into fists. The anger that had been building inside of her ever since the betrayal threatened to overwhelm her.

"You think you can just walk away and ruin my life?" With an angry tremble in her voice, she demanded.

Kane’s eyes gleamed with laughter as his smile grew. "Darling, I think you’re in way over your head."

A shot rang out before she could react, and Kane’s face changed. His hand moved to his side, where his shirt was starting to get stained with blood.

Ethan.

As Kane staggered back, his eyes narrowing in shock, Lily’s breath seized in her throat. "You..." His voice was oozing with hatred as he clenched his teeth. Do you believe this makes a difference? Do you believe you have won?

However, it became evident that the struggle was far from done as Kane’s comments trailed off. Their mission was not finished, and there were still opponents in the room.

Lily retreated toward the others, but her gaze never left Kane. The conflict continued, but at last, she had faced him. She had regained some measure of authority.

And Lily was able to breathe again for the first time since everything had collapsed.
