Chapter 99: Dreams and Interests
Chapter 99: Chapter 99: Dreams and Interests
"In every lovely summer’s day
And everything that’s bright and gay
I’ll always think of you that way
I’ll find you in the morning sun"
The room was dark, the speakers played soothing music, and Qin Guanglin and He Fang leaned against each other, watching the old Noah and Allie embrace each other and dance slowly on the screen.
"We will be like this in the future too," He Fang suddenly spoke up.
"Yeah, right, you’re not going to get dementia in your old age," Qin Guanglin immediately burst the bubble with his reply.
"Shut up, don’t talk to me."
He Fang rolled her eyes, ignoring him, and continued to lean against him and watch the movie.
On the screen, "The Notebook" was playing. The female protagonist Allie had dementia in her later years and didn’t recognize anyone. The male lead Noah would read from his notebook to her every day, recalling their past stories, so she would occasionally remember who the old man in front of her was.
After watching for another fifteen minutes, the ending approached. Noah sneaked into Allie’s hospital room in the middle of the night, sat by the bed, took her hand, and bent down to her. Then the shot transitioned to morning, sunlight streamed into the room, their bodies lay unchanged, as they had both passed away together during the night.
"That’s so touching," He Fang said, leaning on Qin Guanglin’s shoulder.
"Then why aren’t you crying?" Qin Guanglin was puzzled. Weren’t movies like this supposed to make you cry?
"Do you want to see me cry?"
"...No, I don’t."
"You’ve gone and spoiled the whole atmosphere," He Fang complained, then looked at the clock to see that it was nearly nine o’clock in the evening. It was time they couldn’t start another movie, so she got up, ready to put on her shoes, "Okay, we can go now."
"Really moving," Qin Guanglin finally shook his head and sighed, as the movie’s producer credits were nearly finished playing.
He Fang turned her head to look at him, "Then why are you smiling so happily?"
"Although I’m in a delighted mood, that doesn’t stop me from finding it sentimental," Qin Guanglin crawled over and cupped her small face for a kiss, "Being with you just makes me irresistibly happy."
It was indeed a cheerful weekend, from hugging Teacher He all afternoon until evening; being unhappy just wasn’t an option.
"Hmm, I’ve noticed you’re getting better at sweet-talking," He Fang curling her lips into a smile before forcefully holding it back, deliberately kept a straight face and asked, "Who did you learn this from?"
"Hmm... I learned it from you."
"Tsk."
Both dressed and made sure they hadn’t left behind anything, then they went to the front desk to get their deposit back and walked out of the cinema holding hands.
"Are you... struggling financially with rent and living expenses?" Qin Guanglin couldn’t help but ask as they walked down the street, "You still haven’t found a job..."
"It’s not tight, don’t worry."
"Really?" He looked at He Fang somewhat skeptically, then suddenly realized he had asked a faulty question.
Even if it was tight, she would say it wasn’t. What a dumb question...
"Really," He Fang glanced at him and knew what he was thinking, smiling as she said, "You forgot that I’m still writing novels? The manuscript fees are hefty."
"How much do you get for your novels?"
Qin Guanglin was skeptical, for if making money were that easy... No, that’s not right; when he had been drawing at school, he made thousands in a month, so it might actually be possible.
Thinking about this, he tentatively asked, "Over a thousand?"
"You think so little of me?" He Fang raised her eyebrows at him and extended an open hand, waving five fingers in front of his eyes.
"Five thousand?" Qin Guanglin was now surprised, "Why bother being a teacher? If you write full time, you might even become a famous author."
A monthly salary of five thousand in Luo City was already above the average for most people. It was truly impressive that she could earn such fees before graduation.
He Fang looked up at the sky, pondered for a moment, then replied, "Being a teacher is my dream; writing is a hobby." She paused, then turned to Qin Guanglin with a smile, "Feel relieved now? Keep my money safe for me."
"That hobby of yours is pretty serious..."
Qin Guanglin marveled, then remembered something else, "I heard writers tend to go bald easily. You won’t go bald in the future, will you?"
"Stop talking nonsense," He Fang spit out, "Are you going to cut off your ear?"
"Of course not," Qin Guanglin chuckled, "I’m not stupid."
"I think you’re very stupid."
The cool night breeze gently blew, and the bright Milky Way hung in the sky as the two of them leisurely chatted all the way to the dormitory entrance under the streetlights. He looked up, "I still don’t know which floor you live on?"
"Third floor, that window at the very end," He Fang pointed towards a window on the third floor.
"In that case," Qin Guanglin turned to look, "when I walk to that spot, you can still see me from the window."
The road was long; it took reaching the end and turning a corner to escape the window’s line of sight.
"Who wants to watch you."
He Fang snorted, "Hurry up and kiss me, I need to get back to the dorm."
"What’s the rush?" Qin Guanglin said, not hurrying, but as she tilted her face up, he couldn’t resist giving her a peck, "There we go, Teacher He smells so good."
"Then I’m going up; be careful on the road."
He Fang waved to him and walked into the dormitory building, turning back for a glance before she stepped onto the staircase.
The dormitory was much quieter than usual. Chen Yan and Wu Yunyun, typically the most raucous, were preoccupied with urgent work and laid in bed with no mind for play.
Zhou Nan had found a job and was leisurely stretching her legs on her bed before sleep. When she saw He Fang come in, she remarked with a ’yo,’ "Another whole day of dating, tsk tsk."
"I like it."
He Fang walked straight to the window to look down. Under the streetlight, she could only make out Qin Guanglin’s dark figure. As she watched, he suddenly stopped, as though turning his head to look up. Her heart skipped a beat before she realized that Qin Guanglin couldn’t possibly see her.
"Can’t bear to part, can you?" Zhou Nan, still stretching, commented, "Look at the joy bubbling up on your face. Is it really that nice?"
"You’re just jealous." He Fang glanced a few more times then turned to help her stretch, "Don’t rush; I see the peach blossoms on your face, and the star of love is stirring. It won’t be long for you either."
"Hey, I’ll take your auspicious words. When do you see it happening? Press harder, right... mmm, is it coming up soon?"
"It’s definitely this year. You’ll be bubbling too."
Zhou Nan switched legs to continue stretching, "The year has only just passed halfway, there’s still a lot of time... Forget it, being single isn’t so bad. When he shows up, I’ll kick him flying with one foot."
"Remember to conquer with virtue." He Fang laughed covertly, "You said it yourself."
"Military virtue is still a virtue."
...
By the time Qin Guanglin got home, it was after ten o’clock. He opened the door to enter; his aunt wasn’t around, probably already asleep. Qin’s Mom sat alone on the sofa, fiddling with something.
"You’re back... Huh?" Qin’s Mom looked up and was startled, "Did you go on a date today or play model?"
"Handsome, right?" Qin Guanglin stood proudly at the entrance, striking a pose, "How about it?"
"All decked out."
Qin’s Mom pursed her lips, "That outfit would be nice for a blind date."
"You know jack, this is called fashion." Qin Guanglin wore a triumphant look, "I have a girlfriend, and it was He Fang who dressed me up."
Teacher He is really something... Oh right, she seemed to have taken a photo. I’ll have her send it to my father-in-law another day.
"Look how pleased you are. Go to bed now."
"What’s the rush, let me take a good look first." Qin Guanglin pranced to the washroom to admire himself in the mirror.
"Hey, by the way, the mugwort your aunt sent arrived. You can take it to He Fang when you’re free." Qin’s Mom continued to tinker with what she held, "It’s on the table in your room."
"Okay."
Qin Guanglin examined himself in the mirror, quite satisfied, "How come I never knew how to dress like this before?"
"Do you know now?" Qin’s Mom countered.
"Uh... I guess I know a little."
"Know a little, my foot. Would you even bother trying without He Fang’s help?" Qin’s Mom didn’t believe him for a second.
"Don’t underestimate me." Qin Guanglin walked out, full of confidence, "What’s so difficult about that?"
"Hmph."
