Chapter 323: Chapter 316: Sold Out
After dropping off He Fang back in He City, the house seemed a bit cold and empty with just Qin Guanglin inside.
A home, after all, isn’t a home without people. He stayed on his own for two days and felt uncomfortable everywhere, so he decided to pack up and head to the Qin family’s place early to spend the New Year with Qin’s Mom.
"What are you off to?"
Just as he entered, he saw Qin’s Mom ready to step out with a fish in a bowl, dressed up in a hat, scarf, and gloves, obviously preparing to go somewhere far.
"Eh, good timing with you coming over, let’s go, drive me to Luo River."
Qin’s Mom took small steps to the door and motioned with her lips, "Open the door."
"What are you going to Luo River for?"
As Qin Guanglin inquired, he poked the fish with a finger and got slapped in the face with a splash of water, wetting both him and his mom, who got angry and quickly put down the basin to pat herself dry.
"What are you poking at, huh? Always causing trouble... Hurry up and drive!"
"No, but what are you taking it there for?"
"Releasing life."
"What?" Qin Guanglin wiped his face, doubting if he had heard right, and looked back and forth between the big grass carp in the basin and Qin’s Mom, "Release what life?"
"To return it to nature, can’t you understand?"
"..."
Qin’s Mom had recently become obsessed with the practice of releasing life, not just joining others in buying turtles or frogs to release, but buying a live fish from the market herself, keeping it for two days, then taking the bus to toss it into the Luo River, doing this once or twice a month.
Qin Guanglin reluctantly went out to drive the car, commenting, "Wouldn’t it be better to just eat it?"
"It’s for building virtue for our family. If you want to eat, buy another one for yourself. Eat one, release one, only this way can you cancel out that thing called... what’s it... karma." Qin’s Mom earnestly explained to him.
"Then why not just not eat and be done with it? I’ll eat by myself; I’m not afraid of any karma or whatever it is."
"Why wouldn’t I eat? The sour and spicy fish is so delicious..."
Eat one, release one, keeping the balance and being able to enjoy the meal without the worry of sinning... Qin’s Mom pondered when she had time she should find that master and tell him about this method, then he wouldn’t have to stick to a vegetarian diet every day.
A clever choice.
Qin Guanglin found it nagging, but since it was his own mom, he just drove her to the Luo River edge and watched her splash the fish into the river along with the water, then glanced at a Fishing Man sitting in the distance.
Even more bothersome.
Maybe one day it would be picked up again by Xiao Yu... oh right, Xiao Yu didn’t have time to fish now, or maybe caught by another fisherman. Here it was being released, there being caught.
"This is helping you accumulate virtue, you should also take some time to release a few when you can. Your Aunt Wang did this for nearly half a year, her son ended up having a big chubby boy. Back when you started living together with He Fang, her son was still single."
Qin Guanglin didn’t know how Qin’s Mom managed to make a connection between releasing life and having sons. He shoved his hands in his pockets and shuffled his feet, looking at her and suddenly, he understood.
She’s already pressuring me for grandchildren before we’re even married!
"We haven’t even had the wedding yet, are you really in such a hurry?" he said incredulously. Even if they did marry, he had no plans to rush into having kids. At the very least, the two of them deserved to enjoy their couple’s world for a year or half, have a honeymoon, and so on.
"Who’s hurrying? I’m not hurrying, just saying, it’s mainly about doing good and accumulating virtue."
Qin’s Mom, carrying the basin, walked with him toward the parking spot, adding, "You’ve had it too easy these past few years. I went to the temple and got a fortune stick and then... never mind, you wouldn’t understand anyway, the important thing is that releasing life is correct, just remember to occasionally buy a fish from the market and release it—buying from the market earns the most merit since it was about to be eaten, and you set it free, immense merit."
Qin Guanglin listened to her rambling with an expressionless face, fastened his seat belt in silence, then suddenly said, "Mom."
"Hm?"
"I’ve got an even better idea."
"What’s that?"
"Have you ever heard about the Infinite Merit Release Machine?" he asked, looking at Qin’s Mom.
"Scram," Qin’s Mom turned her head to look outside the window, not amused.
Even though she hadn’t heard of it, the name alone, coupled with his expression, told her it wasn’t anything decent.
"It’s cold and you’re running here to release life yourself, listen, next time you want to release life just call me, I’ll come over in the car to help you, saves you the trouble of running back and forth."
"... Fine, I’ll just do it on the weekends, you’re free then too. Oh, and bring He Fang along, then the merit will belong to the both of you."
Chatting idly all the way home, Qin’s Mom left the basin and started tidying up the house, embarking on a thorough cleaning with Qin Guanglin in tow.
"Hey, I forgot to clean over there again..." Qin Guanglin said as he took up a broom, then hesitated and gave up on the idea, deciding to wait for He Fang to come back and clean then.
The first major cleanup unearthed a pile of medicine, which belonged to personal privacy, and it was best not to touch it if possible.
Otherwise, digging out her and Xiaoqing’s secret would spell disaster.
...
...
Heguang District.
Entrance gate.
Xu Wei watched as Sun Wen got out of a taxi, and asked with a hint of curiosity, "Where’s your car?"
"I sold it."
"..."
Sun Wen subconsciously avoided Xu Wei’s gaze, then remembered the car had already been his own, and he didn’t need to feel guilty, so he turned back to her with a smile, "Actually, taking a taxi is pretty good, saves trouble."
Xu Wei was noncommittal, casually taking out her car key and tossing it to him, "Are you in need of money?"
"Currently, a bit short." Sun Wen nodded, caught the key, and chuckled, "Are you giving me this one too?"
"What are you thinking? Go to the underground garage and bring my car out. I’ll wait for you here."
The fiery red Maserati was quickly driven out to the district entrance by Sun Wen, and once Xu Wei got in and gave an address, they slowly drove off.
"How many years has it been with this car? Time for a change, right?"
As Sun Wen drove, he mentioned it casually. Xu Wei silently sat in the passenger seat, seemingly lost in thought, and upon hearing his comment, she glanced at him, asking, "Are you that short on money?"
"No... I was just saying."
"What are you planning to do with the money?"
"Start something up."
"How much more do you need?"
"A few hundred thousand."
The two exchanged a few quick questions and answers, and then the car fell quiet once again.
At the red light at the intersection, Sun Wen stopped the vehicle, hesitating for a moment before finally speaking up, "Uh... could I borrow some from you?"
"Borrow?" Xu Wei savored the word, looking up at him, "What will you use to repay?"
"..." Sun Wen fell silent.
"Tell me, how much do you need?"
"Two hundred thousand should be about enough."
"Fine."
Xu Wei agreed, turning her head back to look out of the window. She had donated more than two hundred thousand to those plump monks at the temple, the key was whether the money spent had any effect.
Sun Wen, receiving her response, realized his grip on the steering wheel had tightened, a surge of excitement lifting his spirits.
"But you have to tell me, what are you going to do with the money."
"I was thinking... about opening a gym."
"Oh."
What did that ’oh’ mean?
Xu Wei hummed a response but said nothing more, leaving Sun Wen somewhat uncertain about her attitude.
He was worried that if he started a business again, Xu Wei would think he wanted to end their relationship—something he did indeed wish to do.
That’s why he had never mentioned it to Xu Wei, and now with the car sold, he had only tried asking because he was really short on funds.
So it had been resolved this easily?
Xu Wei remained silent, and Sun Wen didn’t speak further, driving smoothly to Datong Temple. As soon as they parked and got out, a Little Monk approached to greet them.
"Luo City has another temple, doesn’t it? Called Meditation Zen Temple, right? Not many monks there, but I heard it’s quite efficacious, the real deal ascetics, way better than these greedy imposters by I don’t know how many times. Why do you insist on coming here?"
Sun Wen felt irritated seeing those monks’ smirking faces, unsure of his own mentality. He had to give up everything to earn money, and they could just chant a bit, light a few sticks of incense, and make more money from Xu Wei than he could.
Was this called jealousy, or was it resentment?
"I’m used to it." Xu Wei casually answered.
