Chapter 314: Chapter 307: Pretty Good
The wine no longer smelled fragrant.
The little pot of tea lost its aroma.
Even the ginseng from the West had no scent.
To He’s Daddy, all those large and small packages, gift boxes and bags had changed their appearance.
Why so sudden?
There wasn’t any time to prepare at all.
"Today is just to give you a heads up, we’ll need to discuss the details slowly, see when everyone is free, and then you and his mother can meet... let our families sit down and talk it over."
He Fang’s tone sounded as if everything was already decided, chuckling she swayed a little and stood up to search in her bag for the dried locust flowers she had brought. She filled a clear glass jar to the brim, unscrewed the lid, pinched out a little, and brewed some tea for everyone.
"This was picked by Guanglin as he climbed up the tree, it cools the blood, stops bleeding, clears the liver, and releases fire energy. You eat spicy food every day and always have an internal heat issue. Drink this whenever, so you don’t end up with inflamed gums and mouth ulcers again, having to take those pills."
"Ah, ah."
He’s Daddy nodded absentmindedly, still pondering over how to handle this marriage news. Although he had grown to view Qin Guanglin more and more favorably and had long accepted the fact that the two would marry, the sudden mention of next year made him feel somewhat choked up inside.
Has all the time spent raising my daughter led to her becoming part of someone else’s family?
"Here, have a taste." He Fang pushed the tea towards He’s Daddy, and another cup towards Qin Guanglin, giving him a sly wink.
Qin Guanglin was just as bewildered as He’s Daddy, still thinking about how to broach the subject gently, whereas He Fang on the other side had blabbered everything out already... the conversation had jumped to another topic...
Why so fast?!
And he hadn’t even climbed the tree either; he simply stood on a stone bench, bent the branches down, and pulled off bunch after bunch.
"Mmm... it tastes alright."
He’s Daddy took a few sips of tea, set down his cup, and looked at them, "You... have decided on everything?"
"Mhm, we’ve already moved into the new house, just waiting to have the wedding ceremony and be done."
He Fang nodded vigorously, her words causing He’s Daddy’s chest to tighten again.
They’ve already moved into the new house... what else can be done? Just have the wedding and that’ll be that!
He sat in silence, morose, as Qin Guanglin scratched his head and opened his mouth, wanting to speak but unsure what to say.
All that needed to be said had already been spoken by He Fang. What was left for him to say?
"Uhm... We mainly came this time because she said you were bored at home alone. We came back to keep you company for a few days." He finally spoke up, his words lacking any confidence.
"Mhm, good, good."
He’s Daddy agreed, his face clearly skeptical, "Keep me company, that’s great. How many days will you stay here?"
Qin Guanglin looked at He Fang, "Three, four days, five, six days?"
"About that," He Fang nodded.
At noon, the He Shan couple didn’t return, generally it would be He’s Daddy cooking and eating with He Cheng, but now with He Fang and Qin Guanglin back, naturally, he wouldn’t need to lift a finger. The two of them went out to buy groceries, came back and worked together to prepare lunch. He’s Daddy watched their figures and gradually, the complex mix of initial feelings inside him calmed down.
After all, it was inevitable that his daughter would get married sooner or later; sooner or later it would all be the same. Besides, Qin Guanglin was genuinely reliable, there wasn’t much to fault him for in any regard – he was perhaps too straightforward... But that wasn’t really a flaw. A reliable man could be depended upon, and in his heart, he was always preferable to those flashy types.
"When did you buy the house?"
"Back in March, it took two months after the renovations before we finally moved in."
"Oh... not bad. Did you get a mortgage?"
"Of course, who pays in full these days? Isn’t it better to buy two properties if you have that kind of money?"
At the dining table, He Fang chatted casually with her dad and pulled out her phone from her pocket to hand to him, "This is it, big enough for you? The location is pretty good, too, right next to the school where I work and not far away."
Although the He Family didn’t place great importance on houses and cars, they were still the foundation of a family and affected how well He Fang was living over there. Naturally, the bigger, the better. He Fang didn’t keep it a secret, showing everything she owned off to her dad like a boast, to set his mind at ease.
It was useless just to say she was doing well; she had to provide concrete proof.
He’s Daddy swiped the screen a few times, looking at the photos of the house she took, somewhat pleased. He swiped further, and there was a clear photo of the property deed, with both He Fang and Qin Guanglin’s names on it. He paused for a moment, looked up at He Fang, turned off the screen, and slid the phone back to her.
"Knowing you’re doing well is all that matters. Guanglin’s comic that he drew, it’s really quite good, much more interesting than anything in He City."
He knew all too well that He Fang had deliberately placed that photo last for him to see. He Fang, a primary school teacher with even a high salary, writing a lousy novel—who could she kid? Graduated for just two years, how much money could she really have made?
Buying a house usually required a six-figure down payment, and financially she couldn’t have contributed much—it must be said that Qin Guanglin was reliable and honest; he handled this matter beautifully.
"Should we open this wine and try it?"
"Yeah, open it. Let’s try it together, have a couple of drinks."
There was plenty of food, and it was impossible to finish it all just by eating. After finishing his meal, He’s Daddy didn’t go back for seconds. He enjoyed the wine with the food, chatting with Qin Guanglin. Half a bottle later, feeling they’d eaten and drunk enough, he watched He Fang clear the table and Qin Guanglin helping, he had nothing else to do, so he urged He Cheng to take a nap and prepared to go back to his own bedroom.
"You guys take a nap or go for a walk, whatever you like. Wait until your brother comes home tonight, and we’ll all have dinner together."
The old man stood at the door, giving an instruction. Hearing He Fang’s answer from the kitchen, he closed the door and lay on the bed, fanning himself with a palm-leaf fan, staring steadily at the ceiling, not knowing what he was thinking about. After a long while, he smacked his lips, sighed deeply, pulled out his phone from under his pillow, and started reading Qin Guanglin’s public social media posts.
This kid was indeed not bad, back when they were playing chess, and he was getting beaten left and right, he never wanted to accept ’mercy’ moves. By not allowing him to take back moves on purpose, it was clear to see.
Kitchen.
"That’s it? What does your dad mean by this?" Qin Guanglin still felt a little incredulous.
Although he had anticipated things would go smoothly, this was a bit too smooth. Just a few sentences and it was all settled, leaving him feeling somewhat empty, as if something was missing.
"What else? How complicated do you think it is? He’s already told us to take a nap... Hurry up and wash, then catch up on some sleep. You didn’t get a good night’s sleep again last night."
"I slept very well last night."
Upon hearing that, He Fang snorted and said, "Well my ass, while I was half-asleep, I kept feeling someone pinching my chin, I just couldn’t be bothered to deal with you."
"..."
Qin Guanglin felt quite amazed that his nighttime chin-pinching was noticed; he hadn’t expected her to catch on. "What else did I do? Did you feel anything else?"
"What else did you do?" He Fang asked, puzzled. She truly didn’t know, only felt that this guy couldn’t keep his hands still and kept sneakily pinching her. After a while, she got used to it and fell back asleep, not clear on anything that happened after.
"Heh heh..."
Qin Guanglin gave her a cheeky laugh on purpose, feeling proud as he saw her puzzled expression. "You guess?"
"You guess if I’ll guess?"
