Chapter 216: Chapter 212: Pleasant Goat Says It’s Awesome
October 6th.
Qin Guanglin, who simply couldn’t lie in bed any longer, disregarded He Fang’s objections and insisted on getting out of bed to complete his hospital discharge.
"Anywhere can do a dressing change. Lying here, I’m practically growing fur. Let’s go back. It’s not good for you to take leave from work as soon as you start. You should go back to teaching your students. I think taking a couple of days off at home to recuperate will be just fine."
"Okay, okay, wait a moment."
He Fang noticed he was not in any serious trouble and didn’t insist on keeping him hospitalized. Aside from the gauze on his head still looking a bit conspicuous, he indeed seemed quite lively.
With a phone call to He Shan, a black Buick soon stopped at the front door of the hospital. The pair, carrying their bags and the unfinished fruit, settled into the back seat, and the car slowly started again once the doors were closed.
"Ready to head back?" He Shan glanced at the two in the rearview mirror, feeling that Qin Guanglin looked much better than when he had arrived.
The kid was actually quite alright.
"Yeah, we both have to work, so going back one day earlier means it’s not such a rush."
"Alright. I’ve taken care of everything that needed to be done here. I’ll handle the small, leftover matters. You guys can head back without worries—have you bought your tickets?"
He Fang looked toward Qin Guanglin, "Have you?"
"About to buy them." Qin Guanglin waved his cellphone.
"No rush. Let’s go back and have lunch together first. I’ll drop you two off at the train station after that. Go for the afternoon tickets."
"That works."
The Buick made its way to the He family home. He Shan dropped the pair off, asked what they’d like to eat, and then went off alone to the market to buy groceries.
Qin Guanglin went upstairs with He Fang to tidy up a bit, and after they were done, the soon-to-be father-in-law... oops, the father-in-law-to-be dragged him off to play chess. As expected, Qin ended up losing three games straight, an utterly crushing defeat.
"I’ll let you take back a move." He’s Daddy, who seemed to relish bullying weaker players while tossing two chess pieces in his hand, looked at Qin Guanglin’s furrowed brow and suggested he retract a move.
"You’re bullying my boyfriend again. This game doesn’t count. Destroyed, destroyed!"
He Fang came over with a popsicle in her mouth, swept her hand across the chessboard to mess it up, leaned on Qin Guanglin’s shoulder, and shook it twice, "Let’s start over. I’ll teach you."
"Tsk... can’t you wait a moment? This messes up the whole game."
He’s Daddy was exasperated but powerless. Shaking his head, he began setting the chess pieces back on the board.
"Anyway, I lost. It’s just one or two moves." Qin Guanglin consoled him and turned to look at He Fang, "You know how to do this too?"
"I’m better than both of you put together."
"..."
"Let teacher here give you some pointers... advance the cannon to lure him into a trap."
"The chariot, the chariot... no, wait, the other one, push it to the riverside."
"... exchange it, trade with him."
He Fang finished her popsicle and, stick in hand, kept giving directions from the side. He’s Daddy was internally crumbling, furrowing his brow in thought while occasionally glancing up at her.
"En passant with the knight, step on him, check!"
"Not... " Teacher He finally couldn’t help but interject, "I sent you to college, and you’ve come back with all this to frustrate me? Go away, go away; Qin and I are playing just fine. Don’t you know that ’A true gentleman does not give unsolicited advice’?"
"I’m not a gentleman; I’m a woman, a young woman." He Fang winked triumphantly, tapped the chessboard with the popsicle stick and declared, "Jump, check!"
Qin Guanglin, hiding a laugh, nudged a chess piece forward, shamelessly declaring, "Checkmate."
After all, what belonged to Teacher He was his, including chess skills. That seemed fair enough, and he was finally about to win a game.
"..." He’s Daddy’s face turned grave, no longer fiddling with the chess piece in his hand, instead tightly gripping it as he pondered his next move.
Difficult.
Extremely difficult.
"You’re really throwing your elbow out there..."
"Ts, just go already, don’t delay dinner. That would be cheating."
"I’m thinking, alright? What’s the rush..."
"There’s only one move to make, stop overthinking it and let us win already."
"Fine, fine, you win." He’s Daddy grumbled as he stood up, grabbing his big tea mug as he went. "I’m done playing."
Throwing the elbow out—this daughter can’t be kept.
"Hmph, see how great I am?" He Fang nudged Qin Guanglin’s shoulder with her elbow.
"Amazing, amazing. Truly worthy of Teacher He." Qin Guanglin chuckled as he looked at the board, then turned to He Fang. "I’m surprised. When did you learn that?"
"Wouldn’t do if you saw it coming, would it? When it comes to chess, I am second best in my dorm." She raised her eyebrows proudly and reached out to take his hand. "Come on, let’s go see how lunch is coming along."
"Who’s first?"
"Wu Yunyun. You wouldn’t know her."
Lunch was sumptuous, all serious dishes—He Shan had been busy for most of the morning, setting a full table in an effort to make up for what his sister missed out on these past few days.
Injured, Qin Guanglin couldn’t drink alcohol, and it wouldn’t have been right for He’s Daddy to drink only with He Shan, so he simply brought up two big boxes of coconut juice from downstairs. Everyone filled their cups and clinked a toast together.
Although the attitudes of the two He men hadn’t shown a significant change, the atmosphere at the table had become much more harmonious—after all, the guest had come knocking at their door and encountered trouble while here. One way or another, they felt somewhat embarrassed about it.
Not to mention that Qin Guanglin’s demeanor didn’t have a single flaw and could even be considered exemplary.
Whether they pinched their noses or not, they would have to accept the relationship between the two of them. It was much better to happily welcome this simple and earnest lad. That was how straightforward He’s Daddy’s thoughts were.
"You need to eat well to recover from the injury, eat more."
He Shan pushed a plate of pig’s brain in front of Qin Guanglin, who immediately froze up.
It seemed the future uncle was a believer in ’you are what you eat’—have a head injury, eat a pig’s brain to recover.
"That... I’m not used to this... Teacher He, you have it." Qin Guanglin tactfully refused, pushing the dish towards He Fang with his hand.
"I can’t do it either." He Fang bit her chopsticks and glanced at Qin Guanglin, indicating she also couldn’t handle it, and pushed it forward. "Cheng is working hard on his studies, he needs to eat more."
"Thanks, aunt!"
He Cheng wasn’t fussy with food; he took a spoonful and dug out a big chunk, putting it in his mouth. "Tasty, what is this?"
"Little Pig Peppa."
"..." He Cheng’s chewing paused for a moment. He looked at He Fang, then at He Shan. "You’re lying!"
"Don’t believe me? Ask them."
Seeing He Cheng look his way, Zhao Qing chuckled. "Your aunt isn’t lying to you; it really is Peppa."
"Dad is so cool..." He Cheng’s eyes almost sparkled as he looked at the plate of pig’s brain. "Can you also catch Pleasant Goat..."
"Nope." He Shan glared at He Fang dissatisfiedly. "Can you at least leave some childhood memories for your nephew?"
"What’s wrong with these memories? Eating everything you see on TV is super cool."
"I’m afraid one day he’ll ask me to catch Jerry for him to eat..."
"Enough, we’re eating." Zhao Qing, picturing a dead mouse in his head, swiftly interrupted their conversation. "Eat, eat."
He Fang pursed her lips and snickered, glancing at He Shan before whispering something to Qin Guanglin’s ear.
"..."
Qin Guanglin couldn’t help but twist his head to look at He Shan, his face full of awe.
"What did she say?" He Shan had a bad feeling in his heart.
"...Nothing. The food is delicious."
