Chapter 208: Chapter 205: Do You Believe It?
Early in the morning.
Qin Guanglin woke up early and sat on the bed in a daze for a while, unable to remember when he had fallen asleep the night before.
They talked and talked, then lay down, and continued talking after lying down... and then it was now.
"Woke up so early?"
He’s Daddy was sitting at the desk making tea and turned his head to look over when he heard Qin Guanglin stirring, two dark circles under his eyes quite prominent.
Qin Guanglin stared at his dark circles, hesitating for a moment without asking if he had slept poorly, and got up while replying, "Got used to it, I always wake up early."
He’s Daddy nodded without saying anything, just watched Qin Guanglin.
"What’s wrong?" Qin Guanglin felt his look was odd, but couldn’t figure out why.
"..."
He’s Daddy didn’t speak, just gestured with his hand and continued to prepare his tea.
Qin Guanglin scratched his head without understanding and left the room to wash up.
After freshening up, he went out to see that the living room was empty. He thought for a bit and decided to go out to buy breakfast to bring back for He Fang and her family.
"Morning."
Just as he reached the doorway, He Shan, dressed in a sporty tank top and shorts and with a towel around his neck, sweaty forehead and all, came in and greeted him, "Heading out?"
"Morning, I was about to go buy breakf..." Qin Guanglin nodded in response, but stopped when his eyes landed on what He Shan was holding.
"I’ve got some, come and eat."
He Shan smiled, closed the door behind him, and set the breakfast on the living room table before opening it. He took out a portion to take back to his bedroom and nodded towards Qin Guanglin, "You go ahead and eat. They’ll join us later when they are up."
"Sure, thanks."
"Dad, breakfast’s ready." He Shan reached his bedroom door, saw that Teacher He’s door wasn’t closed, and called out before he pushed his own door open, "Zhao Qing, wake up, I bought sticky rice cakes today..."
The living room was once again left with only Qin Guanglin. He glanced at the bag of breakfast and walked over to He Fang’s door to knock, "Teacher He, are you awake?"
"Come in."
Hearing a response from inside, Qin Guanglin pressed down on the doorknob, and the door opened accordingly. He Fang, in pajamas, was leaning on the bed, rubbing her eyes with a fluffy panda in her arms.
"Breakfast time, your brother brought it back from his run."
"Bring it in for me."
"...Wait a moment, yeah." Qin Guanglin went out to get the breakfast and then came back to set it beside her bed, "Here."
"What are you laughing at?" He Fang found it odd to see him sitting beside her, chuckling to himself, and asked in confusion.
"Just now your brother also brought breakfast to your sister-in-law to eat in their room."
It wasn’t much, but the thought gave Qin Guanglin a peculiar sense of satisfaction.
He Fang ignored his little amusement, took a big bite out of the sticky rice cake, and, seeing that he hadn’t gotten anything for himself, stuffed the remaining half into his mouth and while sipping on soy milk asked, "How did you sleep last night?"
"Pretty well... Your dad kept me chatting until midnight. I don’t even know when I fell asleep."
"What did you talk about?"
"Stuff about school, your work, and what we usually do... Oh, I told him you were living in the school dormitory, so don’t slip up."
"He believed it?"
"Why wouldn’t he?"
"True... If it were my brother, you definitely couldn’t have fooled him."
He Fang handed him the empty bag to throw away, then pointed her chin towards the door, "Go out and close the door; I’m going to change clothes."
Qin Guanglin, without any further objection, stepped out and closed the door properly, waiting quietly outside. Teacher He over there was eating his breakfast, wavering the bun in his hand at him, "Have you eaten? Call Fang to eat together."
"She just ate."
"Oh..."
Qin Guanglin wasn’t sure if it was just his imagination, but he felt something off about the way Teacher He looked at him all morning, until after lunch when he went out with He Fang to book a hotel, he finally breathed a sigh of relief and talked to her about it.
"Weird? I didn’t notice anything," He Fang reflected for a moment. "Just not very spirited, looked like she didn’t have a good sleep..."
She suddenly froze, closed her mouth, and looked at Qin Guanglin, slowing her pace.
"That’s the look! Exactly what you’re doing right now!"
Qin Guanglin’s brow twitched, a bad feeling creeping in.
"You fell asleep and..." He Fang stopped midsentence, thought better of it, and closed her mouth, pulling Qin Guanglin to hurry, "We need to find a place to stay fast. We can’t let you two stay together anymore."
"You can’t be serious?" Qin Guanglin felt a thump in his heart upon her reminder.
This is the end.
Did I talk in my sleep?
Or... He panicked internally, not daring to continue the thought.
"I should’ve insisted on finding a place to sleep last night. How am I going to face this now?" Qin Guanglin was filled with regret.
Having slept with Teacher He for so long, she’s turned me into half an octopus.
Waking up in the morning, the two of us entangled in all sorts of positions... it’s frightening just to think about it.
And then remembering He’s Daddy looking exhausted with two panda eyes...
Sst—Qin Guanglin couldn’t help but feel a chill run down his spine.
"Stop overthinking it. What’s done is done," He Fang glanced at him, half resigned, half amused, shaking her head while pointing ahead, "There used to be a hotel over there, but it closed down after some issues. It’s going to take a while to find another place now."
Although the He Family lived in He City, their residence was quite remote. There were undeveloped urban villages a bit farther away, with more idlers on the streets than in Luo City.
In Luo city, you couldn’t tell if the aunties and uncles waltzing down the streets in vests, slippers, and shorts with a palm-leaf fan were rich or not; but here, most were just lazing about with odd jobs—It was evident just by their faces. That numb, lethargic gaze, the way they squatted on the ground, regardless of whether they were dressed neatly or not, couldn’t hide that inherent air about them.
Walking down the street, Qin Guanglin suddenly felt a sense of gratitude, gripping He Fang’s hand tighter, "Let’s go buy some groceries later, and cook a meal for your family, shall we?"
He contemplated the effort He Fang’s father and brother must have invested to nurture her into such a remarkable person.
He Fang thought for a moment and shook her head, "Buying groceries is fine, but cooking is unnecessary. You don’t know how to make much right now... Let’s do it when we come next time, once you’ve mastered more dishes, then you can show off your skills to them."
"Alright."
...
"He Shan, come here for a second."
He’s Daddy had been pondering something on the balcony for a long time and beckoned He Shan over.
"What’s up, Dad?"
"What do you think of that kid?"
"I think he’s alright; no major problems..." Seeing He’s Daddy frowning, He Shan glanced outside and closed the balcony door, asking in a low voice, "What’s wrong?"
"I don’t think he’s reliable," He’s Daddy said sternly.
"Why not?"
"Last night, he..." He’s Daddy hesitated, then moved closer to the corner of the balcony and whispered, "The kid is restless in his sleep. Last night, he kept reaching out toward me." He gestured to his chest and squirmed uncomfortably, frowning as he continued, "Can you imagine if... hmm... I’ve asked him. He claims he’s an artist, living in his own place, and that Fang stays in the school dorm. Think about it, would the school let an outsider stay in the dorm? Right? And it’s impossible for Fang to stay at his place. So where does this habit come from? I’m telling you, this kid isn’t straightforward, who knows how many girlfriends he’s had, and still, he tells me he’s never had any. Is that possible? Too dishonest. No, think of a way to talk to Fang about this..."
"Hold on, wait a minute..." He Shan, watching his dad gesturing and raising his voice, quickly interrupted, "You just said, he told you Fang stays in the school dorm?"
"Yes, that’s right," He’s Daddy nodded. "He told me that last night."
"Look."
He Shan pulled out his phone, opened a group chat, found some photos previously shared by He Fang, and put them in front of He’s Daddy, "Where in the school dorms would you find such a big kitchen? And look at the furnishings in this room, the tables in this living room... A grade school teacher’s dorm? Do you believe it?"
"..."
He’s Daddy stood there, stroking his chin in deep thought, and it took a while before he caught on, "What are you getting at...?"
"Our family’s cabbage has definitely been gnawed on by a pig," He Shan sighed, looking at He’s Daddy, "These two are definitely living together."
