Chapter 202: Chapter 199: Meeting the Father-in-Law in Progress

In the living room.

He’s Daddy and the two others sat on the sofa, staring silently at Qin Guanglin.

Qin Guanglin stood there stiffly, a little frightened by the situation, and looked to He Fang for help.

Weak, pitiful, and helpless.

"What are you guys doing, being so serious."

He Fang broke the silence, sat down in front of the sofa, and reached for an apple from the coffee table. After giving it a quick rub, seeing that Qin Guanglin was still standing, she patted the sofa and said, "Come sit."

"Oh..."

"This is my dad."

"Uncle, hello."

Qin Guanglin sat up straight with his legs together, hands on his knees, and politely greeted He’s Daddy while sneakily sizing up his potential father-in-law.

He’s Daddy had a large frame, was lean and spry, looking sharp and piercing Qin with his gaze, neither speaking nor moving, which made Qin’s scalp tighten.

Not at all as kind as her brother.

"This is my sister-in-law," He Fang continued to introduce.

"Sister-in-law, hello."

Qin Guanglin averted He’s Daddy’s gaze and greeted his sister-in-law weakly.

This doesn’t look good...

The sister-in-law smiled and nodded, "Hello."

"He’s called Qin Guanglin, my boyfriend." He Fang bit into the apple, found it tasteless, and casually handed it to Qin Guanglin while picking up a banana to eat.

"Is this my uncle?" The curious nephew stared at Qin Guanglin, causing all four pairs of eyes to turn towards him, making him shrink back.

"In the future," He Fang responded with a smile.

"Cough..." He’s Daddy finally spoke, giving He Fang a displeased glance before turning to Qin Guanglin and beginning, "Qin... uh..."

"Qin Guanglin. You can just call me Qin," he quickly intercepted.

"Oh, Qin... um..." He’s Daddy opened his mouth and then was silent again.

The sister-in-law chuckled and nudged He Fang with her chin, "Fang, go help your brother, he’s been busy in the kitchen for a while now."

"I’ll go, let me go." Qin Guanglin stood up abruptly.

"Sit down," He Fang pulled him back, pinching his hand slightly and winking, then got up herself and headed toward the kitchen.

"..."

"Where’s your boyfriend?" He Shan saw He Fang entering with a banana and turned to ask.

"He’s undergoing a three-person tribunal. They told me to come and help you." He Fang, looking carefree, lifted the pot lid and exclaimed in awe, "Wow, you steamed crabs!"

"Don’t mess with it, you’ll let the steam out." He Shan shooed her away, "You can’t even boil noodles, you’re not any help. Stay out of the way." He paused, curiously asking, "Aren’t you worried about leaving that kid out there alone?"

"Alone? Dad’s putting on a stern face, but he’s actually more nervous than anyone."

He Fang glanced outside, amused, and tossed the banana peel into the trash, "Who said I can’t cook noodles? Just so you know, I’ve learned amazing culinary skills now that would scare you to death."

"Poison me, more like... How did you two meet? How long have you been together?"

"He’s my senior, really reliable. We’ve been together for a very long time, just haven’t mentioned it to you." He Fang had already aligned their stories with Qin Guanglin in case of questioning, to say that they started dating when they were in school.

"In what way is he reliable?"

"He treats me even better than you treat my sister-in-law."

"Pssh, I don’t believe it," He Shan said, curling his lip. "Stand back a bit, don’t let the oil splash on you."

Sizzle!

The vegetables hit the hot oil with a loud crackle. He picked up the wok, gave it a shake, and continued, "Now that you mention it, I’m skeptical. Don’t let someone fool you; nowadays, jerks can be so convincing. The nicer they are to you, the more you should be on guard. Just the other day, I had a case where this couple had only been married for two months before the guy showed his true colors. He seemed so perfect before the wedding, but the moment they got married, he changed face..."

"Enough, enough, don’t talk to me about your silly cases. He’s different, okay? Don’t you trust my judgement?"

He Fang leaned against the cabinet with her arms crossed, watching him cook without any intention of helping. "Later, put in a good word for my boyfriend, will you? Don’t go fanning the flames with Dad."

She peeked outside; Qin Guanglin happened to sneak a glance her way, tilting his chin and giving her a plea-for-help look.

"Did he ask to come to our house or did you?" He Shan asked as he fried the veggies.

"It was him." He Fang was making faces at Qin Guanglin but didn’t forget to answer the question.

Always talking about coming over, then panicking when it’s time.

Hmph, men.

"Then it’s okay. Have you visited his place yet?"

"I’ve been there already; his mom really likes me." She shifted her gaze from him, glancing at the wok in He Shan’s hand. "Is it ready yet? I’m starving."

"Almost, almost, this is the last dish. You go rinse the bowls and chopsticks and take them out."

"Oh."

He Fang carried the bowls and chopsticks to the living room to set up, turning her head to look at the three seated there, she called out, "Get ready for dinner."

Qin Guanglin breathed a sigh of relief, quickly wiping the sweat from his palms onto his pants before standing up. "I’ll help carry the dishes."

He gave a nod to He’s Daddy and his sister-in-law and then dashed over to He Fang, who was about to enter the kitchen. "I’ll help, you sit, you sit."

He Fang pointed her chin towards the direction of the washroom. "Go wash your hands."

"...Oh."

After washing his hands and helping with two dishes, lunch was ready to be served. Qin Guanglin wasn’t sure of the house rules, so he sat beside He Fang, following her every move—he picked up his chopsticks when she did and took food when she did.

I really don’t know how He Fang managed to be so calm when she visited his place.

He’s Daddy ate silently without a word, but his eyes kept drifting over to the two of them, making Qin Guanglin feel even more nervous.

"I didn’t know your tastes... is it okay? Can you eat this?" He Shan saw that Qin Guanglin wasn’t eating much and asked.

"I can, I can," Qin Guanglin replied holding his bowl, hastily shoving rice into his mouth to show he was quite comfortable.

"Don’t be nervous." He Fang saw he was a bit stiff and patted his leg under the table, mouthing the words to him before placing two crabs into his dish. "Eat up, my brother made a big feast specially because you were coming."

"Yeah, specially for the both of you," He Shan smiled at his sister and then at Qin Guanglin, suddenly finding the scene rather amusing.

He had thought about what it would be like when his sister brought a boyfriend home, but now that it was actually happening, it felt oddly special.

This day had come surprisingly early.

"Here, mine has more paste. Let’s swap," Qin Guanglin said, cracking open a crab and looking at He Fang’s before reaching to switch them.

"..."

He Shan looked at the crab in his hand, and then at his wife. "Shall we switch too?"

"Just eat yours," his sister-in-law said, casting him a glance before taking a big bite of her own.

He Fang secretly smiled, looking at Qin Guanglin, who was intensely focused on cracking the crab he had gotten from her, and felt regret.

Deep regret.

Having decided that doing more can lead to more mistakes, and doing nothing can avoid them entirely, why did he just act instinctively as soon as he set foot in the door?
