Cheng Yu seemed rather unhappy from her words. An Hao knew she must be holding some grudges against her, right?

"Teacher Cheng, it’s my fault!" An Hao felt somewhat remorseful in her heart, "Since we both have a day off tomorrow, why don’t you come visit me? Then, you can give your family a good phone call and have a chat."

Cheng Yu’s lips held a hint of a smile: "An Hao, did I do something to make you uncomfortable? I just feel like we have a certain affinity, and I feel inexplicably close to you. So, maybe I made some unreasonable requests of you? You’re a very likeable girl, not only does Cheng Yue like you, but I like you too. In my heart, I think of you as a sister."

"I really didn’t mean anything else. Teacher Cheng, please believe me!" These days, she truly had been too busy and forgotten. Once she had called Cheng Yue and knew that the Cheng Family was reassured, that tight string in her brain relaxed, and she cast the matter aside.

"Fine, I believe you." Cheng Yu’s smile persisted, her tone smooth and gentle, "Then can we forgo sending the telegram?"

"Of course!" An Hao laughed along, "I’ll be waiting for you at my place tomorrow, Teacher Cheng. Come early, and I’ll treat you to a meal to let you taste my cooking."

"Sure." Cheng Yu happily agreed, "But if your cooking is delicious, I might come over often to freeload meals."

"Teacher Cheng is welcome to come by any time!"

"However, would Staff Officer Qin have any objections to me coming over?" Cheng Yu ventured tentatively.

"Of course not! You have fought together on the same battlefield after all!"

"That’s good then." Cheng Yu let out a soft sigh of relief, "Then I’ll see you tomorrow!"

"Alright." An Hao gave Cheng Yu her address and then headed back.

In the evening, Qin Jian came back and the two of them started discussing the matter as they ate dinner.

"Teacher Cheng is coming over tomorrow, she says she wants to call her family to let them know she’s safe!" An Hao said.

"Okay." Qin Jian thought for a moment and asked, "Are you and this Cheng Yu close?"

"She’s part of our research group, we meet often, and she’s quite a nice person. But whenever I get close to her, I can always inexplicably sense her subtle sorrow." An Hao pondered and added, "I think she must be a person with a story! Otherwise, she wouldn’t be at her age, unmarried and not dating."

An Hao felt that although life was beset with illness and threats, when love arrived, no one could convince their own heart to refrain from falling in love forever.

"Perhaps her lover died on the battlefield," An Hao murmured softly.

Qin Jian silently nodded: "The harm that war inflicts on people can’t be erased with the passing of time!"

As agreed, Cheng Yu arrived at the military compound the next day.

When she found An Hao’s home, An Hao had already prepared the ingredients for lunch, planning to serve her a lavish meal.

There was a knock at the door from outside.

An Hao went to open the door and saw Cheng Yu standing at the entrance, dressed in a white dress, long hair draped over her shoulders, and wearing two shiny, large earrings, making her look as though she had shed ten years.

"Teacher Cheng, you look so beautiful! Come on in!" An Hao opened the door wider and invited Cheng Yu in.

Cheng Yu placed the fruits she brought on the table, then took a couple of tours around An Hao’s home, smiling and commenting, "Your little home isn’t big, but it’s quite cozy."

The whole house was filled with the essence of life, with traces of Qin Jian everywhere.
